US SHAMED BY GHOSTS OF TYRANTS PAST

THE hypocrisy of Condoleezza Rice is sickening.

The US National Security adviser claims America has a strong moral case to
justify the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

She insists that action must be taken against him because "history is
littered with cases of inaction" against dangerous dictators.

She implies we all have a duty to stop tyrants who kill thousands and even
millions of people.

So why didn't Washington take action against a string of dictators in its own
backyard?

Where were US troops when President Augusto Pinochet of Chile began
slaughtering the 100,000 people his death squads arrested and tortured?
Nowhere.

Who protested in the White House at the murderous reign of right-wing monster
President Somoza of Nicaragua? No one.

Which US officials called for an end to similar activities by brutal leaders
in El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama?

The answer, of course, is none, because all these evil dictators were put in
place and backed by America - just as it supported Saddam in his early years.

Washington has always been willing to turn a blind eye to atrocities - as
long as it suited US interests.

So for Ms Rice to talk of "morals" to justify an illegal invasion of Iraq by
American troops and the likely death of thousands of innocent civilians is
obscene.

She may fool "intellectually challenged" President Bush with such vapid
arguments.

But they don't wash in Britain and only serve to reveal the extent of the
right-wing lunacy now holding sway in the White House.
