...Where should I visit ???

IP: *.unknown.be.uu.net 14.11.01, 15:12
I'm looking for recommendations of places to visit while in Warsaw from 23-30
Dec. I'm also looking to get some sci-fi or action movie type DVDs that are
spoken in Polish with Polish and English subtitles. If you know some good
stores with such please tell me the name and street...

I have also thought to take the train to Krakow for an overnight stay for the
28-29 if anyone knows some good places to look at while there.

Thank you... 8-)

Seven days? Two cities? And looking for something interesting?
I am sure that's not enough.
      • Gość: G.Bardic Why I am visiting... IP: *.unknown.be.uu.net 14.11.01, 15:36
The biggest reason I'm going to Warsaw is because I must leave my present house
before Christmas holiday and I'm spending that time with at my other halfs
mothers appartment. So I thought while I was there I should go have a short
look about the city and finally visit Krakow once, as I have been to Warsaw
        twice before.
        • d.z. Re: Why I am visiting... 14.11.01, 15:44
So if You have been to Warsaw before You probably have visted all those
interesting places as Old Town, Wilanów, Łazienki etc.
Maybe visiting Kraków would be a better idea.
It is marvelous city, I know that because I have familly there and I am
visiting this city once a month (at least).
You can also go near by Baltic sea and visit cities like Gdańsk, Sopot,
          Gdynia.

d.z., you are stupid, as usual. The guy comes to Warsaw because he has a house
there. Try to think a bit! You could advice him to go to Paris, Prague or
            Pernambuco as well.

Why would anyone sane want to go to Warsaw more than once? Warsaw is a city you
go to once just to see it, and then again if you have to. No one reasonable wants
to spend a second more in that ugly, dirty city than they have to. There are so
many places in Poland to see with true histories, that the fake warsaw just cant
compare to. See Krakow, see Poznan the crucible of the Polish state, see Torun
with its magnificent Old Town, see Gdansk and Malbork area. See the Baltic coast,
go to the mountains, see Zamosc and Lublin. Why warsaw?

As you probably found earlier, Warsaw is a strange city. You may discover here unique and
interesting things, like in simmilar older cities all around the world. I may give you cupple of hints in
this respect, where to go and what you may see, but I have to better know what may be your points of
interest. Art? history? architecture, people of the city?
      Cheers

The 2 times I was in Warsaw before I was with a friend who lived in Warsaw all
her life. The only places we went those times (for I was only there a few days
each time) was to Old Town, we saw a movie, I remember a store called Ghent I
believe, we went dancing at GroundZero (Not sure if correct name), and visited a
very very very tiny lesbian bar in a basement on some small street someplace (I
        hear it has close since).
I like parks, science and animal mueusms, I love horses, is there a public
riding stable in or near Warsaw reacable by public transport? I would love to
meet some people but I fear not being able to commuicate as I only know about 30
        Polish words right now.
And does anyone know of any Hash House Harriers in Warsaw?

I advise you to stay longer in Cracow, this city is really great, there are a
lot of pubs and clubs on the Old Town, Warsaw is not so interesting, becase
city was destroyd by Germans during The 2 World War, but I think you can visit
Wilanow (king`s palace) and Old Market
    • Gość: agulha Re: ...Where should I visit ??? IP: 10.131.128.* 02.12.01, 11:32
Some ideas, perhaps slightly different than other...
      - IMAX cinema Powsinska street - waaay from the centre, attached to Sadyba Best
Mall: special cinema for 3-dimensional movies. Attention - some movies there
are 2-dimensional ("2-D"). Unfortunately the movies are dubbed (?dubbing in
Polsh - when you don't hear the original voices at all, only actors talking on
Polish - one Polish actor per one foreign actor), yet here the point is to see
it. The tickets are about the same price as in any other cinema.
      - famous Stadion Dziesięciolecia - "Stadion" ("Decade Stadium") - the biggest
market in Europe. Polish, Russian, Asians and others are selling goods here.
For example, pirate (=very cheap) CDs. Do not take your passport or credit
cards with you. Watch your wallet (BTW it's a general advise wherever you are).
It's on right bank of Vistula, just after the Poniatowski bridge, many bus and
tramways go there, e.g. tram 22.
      - Łazienki park and palace - good idea, even in winter
      - like to skate? Do rent skates and have a good time at Tor Stegny, +- corner
of Witosa and Sobieskiego, again, good bus connection. This is artificial ice,
so you can expect it to be open always but skating sport events. It's in the
way to Wilanów [there are actually two big street going to Wilanów, the other
      goes past Sadyba Best Mall)
      - you can go to Kampinos National Park to see real forest in winter (north of
Warsaw, two suburban buses go there)
      - do visit the Royal Castle inside, if you hadn't done it before; try to join
an English-speaking group with guide or consider hiring a guide.
      - take your swimming suit with you and go to Warszawianka swimming pool complex
(many recreational facilities, like jacuzzi) - Merliniego Str. (small street
parallel to Pulawska Str.). They are expensive, but the place is nice, clean
and safe. There are some other smaller swimming pool complexes of this kind,
e.g. Jagiellonska Str. on right bank of Vistula river.
      - do taste great heated mead in a PASSABLE (not too nice) restaurant Pasieka in
the New Town (New Town is just near the Old Town)
      - regarding movies: please note that usually foreign movies in the cinemas are
in original language version with Polish subtitles, except for movies for
children OR with no age limit (like Shrek, which is in Polish). BUT in the
video rentals films are read by speaker!! If you hire a video cassette or DVD,
make sure this is the English (Original) version, at Beverly Hills Video (e.g.
Jana Pawla Str) they keep these apart.
      - if your friend has a car, you can go to restaurant Pod Zlotym Linem in
Wierzbica near Serock, north-east of Warsaw, to eat delicious fish.

Very important: does anybody picks you up from the airport or railways/bus
      station? If not:
      - try to avoid bus 175 (airport-railways station-downtown-Old Town). For years
      thieves have been "working" there.
      - do never take a taxi just waiting at the station; do not accept a proposal or
a taxi driver with plastic identity card in the airport. A friend of mine
thought the guy must be "legal" and... paid 80 zl instead of 40 she would
      normally have paid.
      What to do?
      - airport: there are hekpdesks of 3 taxi companies (MPT, Sawa and ?-forgot) -
      do order a taxi there
      - Centralna railway station - go to the main hall (Hala Glowna - upstairs), go
out from the side of Marriott hotel, identify two taxi stop points: one are of
normal (thief) taxis, another is of MPT ("919"; uniform white cars) - you can
      take MPT
      - call for a taxi - the best is 919 - they are the most expensive from the
legal companies (2 PLN per km), yet there is always someone speaking English
when you phone, and, having a lot of cars, they can provide you one wothin 5-7
minutes and not 15, as some cheaper companies. Remember you'll have to define
the place where you'll be waiting. Other companies: Bayer Taxi - 9667 1,30
      PLN/km, Euro Taxi- toll-free number 0800 222222 1,60 PLN/km, and many, many
others. Don't take a taxi just from the street - some private taxi make
themselves signs looking alike legal companies ones to make you take them for
the company taxi, and then charge you a lot of money. For example, there is a
taxi company "Partner", tel. 9669, logo: write-yellowish "Partner" on green
background. Two days ago, at night, I saw a taxi with white-yellowish "Pantera"
and number "6996" on. Would you make a difference, especially from distance?

Kraków: consider visiting Wieliczka - salt mines museum, with sculptures in
salt, class 0 UNESCO world heritage place. Trains to Wieliczka go very
frequently, there are buses, too. This is definitely sth worth seeing.

OK, that's all I could think about. If you had any other questions, please
      write to me - agulha@acn.waw.pl.
Have a nice in Poland anyway

Forget about Warsaw... it is dirty, ugly and dangerous.
If you decided to travel to the capitol of one of
past-communist countries I would suggest you visiting
Prague or Budapest. They are beautiful examples of
normal cities in that region. But not Warsaw.
Warsaw is at a bit higher level of civilisation than
          Minsk in Belarus.
          • d.z. Re: ...Where should I visit ??? 03.12.01, 19:59
            You poor small thing.
There are a lot of places in every city in every country which should not be
            visited.
But first: can You read? If You can, pleas read the question again. Then give the
answer, othervise someone may think You are not able to understand anything.
