'Stałe połączenie' in English

IP: *.lerkins.com / 195.46.43.* 20.11.03, 23:09
Does anybody know how 'stałe połączenie' is called in English? I've tried to
find it out, but with poor results. I should add perhaps that all my Polish-
English dictionaries date back to late 1980's, so they, unfortunately, do
not include up-to-date computing terms.

Could be "costant link" as well.

If it goes for the Internet, yes - broadband connection or high-speed
connection. In both cases "permanent" is implied because so far it's not
possible to be "broadband" or "high-speed" on dial-up connection. "Cable
connection" or "[A]DSL connection" are also in wide use.
On the other hand it's possible to have permanent but still slow connection i.e.
dedicated line (frame relay) or ISDN 128, but these are have been fading away
          in recent years.

Perhaps "constant connection", but "Słownik komputerów i internetu" (znakomity,
radzę zaraz sprwdzić/kupić) among all te entries starting with "stały" does not
      include this term.

Are you sure? The translations you gave (constant link or constant connection
do not occur in the Free On-Line
Dictonary of Computing. Here's the link:
        foldoc.doc.ic.ac.uk/foldoc/index.html
Maybe someone can come up with something else ...

"constant" does not fit here, as regards non-varying values, e.g. temperature,
        or water level.
for internet connection, choose "permanent" = unlimited, non-ending in terms of
        time.

Imagine you are the teachers of English and your student gives you such a
question. How will you react if you do not know the word or phrase they are
        asking for?
        • Gość: steph Re: 'Stałe połączenie' in English IP: *.in-addr.btopenworld.com 21.11.03, 12:26
Have been in such situation. What you do? You get 'creative'. It's hardly
unlikely that any student will question your answer, providing it's given with
confidence, without hesitation. Unless, of course, you have no clue
whatsoever, which is when you offer to do some research.

when you want to listen to the radion through the Net (for example
www.virginradio.co.uk) they often ask you: your internet connetion: modem?
broadband?. So this is the equivalent of our 'stale lacze'.

No właśnie, w jakim kontekście termin tej został użyty?

The permanent connection - stale lacze

      Check it with google.
the modem or the broadband has to do with the speed.
For example DSL is a broadband but not permanent.

DSL is permanent as long as I keep my PC and DSL modem on. I don't have to dial-
up each and everytime. That's why I have to have a firewall. Some of them give
you a static IP address, some of them dynamic only. It depends on ISP's
        configuration. Then read here:
