Former British government minister Chris Smith has been HIV-positive for the
past 17 years, it was revealed today.
Smith told the Sunday Times he did not tell Prime Minister Tony Blair about
his illness when he was appointed to the Cabinet in 1997 and did not feel it
had affected his work in any way.
The first openly gay Cabinet minister in British political history, Smith
said he decided to go public about his condition because of Nelson Mandela's
moving remarks about the recent death of his son from AIDS.
