Baghdad: For Centuries a Major Centre of Jewish Life [1]
            News Item:

January 1991--Outbreak of the Persian Gulf War. An international coalition led
by the United States attacks Iraq in response to Dictator Saddam Hussein¹s
            invasion and annexation of Kuwait.

A number of times every winter I am asked about the peculiar scheduling of the
petition for rain in the daily service, which the prayer-books instruct us to
begin reciting from December 4th. I usually mutter some confusing reply about
talmudic calculations based on autumnal equinoxes and other concepts that are
not all that clear in my own mind.
During the fateful days of the Gulf War the more basic significance of this
date comes to mind in all its irony: We are actually praying for an abundant
            rainfall for Iraq!

Surprising as this might sound in today's circumstances (especially when we
keep in mind the terrible drought that troubled Israel this year), this fact
underlines the special connection that has always existed between the Jewish
people and that part of the world currently known as Iraq. This was the
birthplace of Abraham and the land to which the Judæans were exiled after the
destruction of the First Temple. Scholars believe that this was where the
            Torah underwent its final redaction.

The fact that Jews throughout the Diaspora continue to define their winters
according to the Iraqi climate testifies again to the decisive influence of
the Iraqi (or, as known in other times: Babylonian, or Mesopotamian, etc.)
Jewish community. It was the Babylonian Talmud that was recognized as the
highest legal authority for Jews throughout the world, and it occupied a place
of such centrality in their studies that the Babylonian landscape was at times
more real for many Jews than their own.

Let me illustrate this vast subject by limiting myself to a few comments about
the Jewish involvement with Iraq's capital, Baghdad. Now, the history books
tell us that the history of Baghdad did not commence until the year 763 when
it was built as a new military outpost by the Caliph al-Mansur. However
students of the Talmud are familiar with a third-century Rabbi Hanna
Bagdata'a. For Rashi, writing in eleventh-century France, it was obvious that
this rabbi was a native of Baghdad. Modern scholars are not ready to
automatically reject that identification since Muslim Baghdad was likely built
upon an already existent town that may well date back to talmudic times, as
            evidenced by its Persian name.

By the 10th century the major Babylonian institutions, including the great
talmudic yeshivahs of Sura and Pumbedita and the court of the Exilarch, had
all relocated to Baghdad in order to be closer to the seat of the Islamic
Caliphate, which was the most powerful political force in the western world.
It was through their official recognition by the Baghdadi Caliphs that the
Babylonian Jews were able to impose their religious leadership and their
Talmud upon most of the Jewish world.
During the zenith of Iraqi-Jewish dominance it was inconceivable to many Jews
that Baghdad had not always been a major Jewish center, and some talmudic
sources were rewritten to reflect that perception. According to one such
tradition Rav, the original founder of the venerable talmudic academy at Sura,
had really intended to go to Baghdad, but had been tricked into staying by the
mother of one of his students, who did not want to be parted from her son. The
woman in question had approached the scholar asking how much milk would be
needed to cook a portion of meat. Shocked by this display of halakhic
ignorance, Rav concluded that his presence was needed in such a Jewish
wasteland, and so he stayed there.

I recently had a look at a fascinating medieval Hebrew text, which claims to
describe how the vessels from the first Temple in Jerusalem had been hidden
away prior to its destruction by the Babylonians. "All of these vessels were
concealed and interred in a tower in the land of Babylonia, in a city named
Baghdad." The source, by the way, states that the hiding places of these
vessels were recorded on a copper tablet. This legend is particularly
interesting when we note that a copper scroll containing a treasure map
indicating the hiding-places of Second Temple artifacts (possibly reflecting a
plan that was never executed) is one of the most enigmatic documents to be
discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

All these sources testify to the strength of the historical Jewish connection
to Iraq and its capital, a fact which only serves to intensify the tragedy of
the current situation, when a self-styled Nebuchadnezzar has again tried to
aim his deadly arrows towards Jerusalem.

        -
Charon, in Greek mythology, is the ferryman of the dead. The souls of the
deceased are brought to him by Hermes, and Charon ferries them across the
river Acheron. He only accepts the dead which are buried or burned with the
proper rites, and if they pay him an obolus (coin) for their passage. For that
reason a corpse had always an obolus 1 placed under the tongue.
Those who cannot afford the passage, or are not admitted by Charon, are doomed
to wander on the banks of the Styx for a hundred years. Living persons who
wish to go to the underworld need a golden bough obtained from the Cumaean
Sibyl. Charon is the son of Erebus and Nyx. He is depicted as an sulky old
man, or as a winged demon carrying a double hammer. He is similar to the
        Etruscan (Charun).

        • Gość: dr.uFo PLUTO PL HADES IP: *.cm-upc.chello.se 26.01.03, 13:13

          http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/nineplanets/nineplanets/pluto.html

Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun (usually) and by far the smallest.
Pluto is smaller than seven of the solar system's moons (the Moon, Io, Europa,
          Ganymede, Callisto, Titan and Triton).

orbit: 5,913,520,000 km (39.5 AU) from the Sun (average)
          diameter: 2274 km
          mass: 1.27e22 kg
In Roman mythology, Pluto (Greek: Hades) is the god of the underworld. The
planet received this name (after many other suggestions) perhaps because it's
so far from the Sun that it is in perpetual darkness and perhaps because "PL"
are the initials of Percival Lowell.
Pluto was discovered in 1930 by a fortunate accident. Calculations which
later turned out to be in error had predicted a planet beyond Neptune, based
on the motions of Uranus and Neptune. Not knowing of the error, Clyde W.
Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Arizona did a very careful sky survey which
          turned up Pluto anyway.

After the discovery of Pluto, it was quickly determined that Pluto was too
small to account for the discrepancies in the orbits of the other planets. The
search for Planet X continued but nothing was found. Nor is it likely that it
ever will be: the discrepancies vanish if the mass of Neptune determined from
the Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune is used. There is no tenth planet.

Pluto is the only planet that has not been visited by a spacecraft. Even
the Hubble Space Telescope can resolve only the largest features on its
surface (left and above). There is a planned mission called New Horizons that
will launch in 2006 if it gets funded.

Fortunately, Pluto has a satellite, Charon. By good fortune, Charon was
discovered (in 1978) just before its orbital plane moved edge-on toward the
inner solar system. It was therefore possible to observe many transits of
Pluto over Charon and vice versa. By carefully calculating which portions of
which body would be covered at what times, and watching brightness curves,
astronomers were able to construct a rough map of light and dark areas on both
          bodies.

Pluto's radius is not well known. JPL's value of 1137 is given with an
error of +/-8, almost one percent.

Though the sum of the masses of Pluto and Charon is known pretty well (it
can be determined from careful measurements of the period and radius of
Charon's orbit and basic physics) the individual masses of Pluto and Charon
are difficult to determine because that requires determining their mutual
motions around the center of mass of the system which requires much finer
          measurements

                                Speech Synthesis: An Explanation

                                Artificial speech
Scientists have tried to make natural-sounding synthetic speech for a long
time, for a number of reasons. Speech synthesis is an important research tool
in the study of speech production and perception and speech and hearing
disorders. In addition, automatic generation of speech provides communication
for those who have lost the power to speak through stroke, disease or
accident. Speech synthesis also serves as a central component in commercial
software that converts text to speech automatically, commonly known as text-to-
                                speech systems.

Dedicated research at many centers has advanced our understanding of speech
production and development of methods of speech synthesis. Major
contributions to this field have were made by the late Dr. Dennis Klatt at
MIT, among them the development of KLSYN, the most advanced formant
synthesizer, and DECtalk, a remarkable text-to-speech system offered by
                                Digital Equipment Corporation.

                                Speech and the source-filter theory
Klatt based his work on an insight of Dr. Gunnar Fant of Stockholm, usually
expressed as the source-filter model of speech. About 1960, Fant offered to
the research community the idea that the production of speech could be
understood and simulated by treating it as the generation of sound by a
source, and the subsequent passage of that sound through a more or less
                                complicated filter.

The source sound can be created by glottal vibration--vibration of the vocal
cords--which occurs when air is made to pass through the slit formed by a
nearly-closed glottis with sufficient force, provided by the lungs. When the
glottis is open, the source sound can be created by the turbulence of air
passing through the vocal tract and generating noise, as in whispering. The
sound passes through the throat, past the tongue, which can assume a number of
positions, past the teeth and lips and out of the mouth, and out of the nose
as well, if the velum, the valve connecting the throat and nose, is open. At
each obstacle, cavity or other discontinuity, reflections, resonances and
delays change the way the source sounds, forming the filter in Fant's source-
                                filter model.

An important aspect of Fant's insight is that it allows the accumulated
knowledge of electrical filter theory, today including digital filtering, to
be applied to the simulation of this process. Basically, one begins speech
synthesis by creating a source waveform that resembles glottal vibration or
noise. Fant first used conventional electronic components, like those in a
radio or television set, to make an oscillator and filters. Today, such
development is done using a computer, where a stream of numbers represents the
source waveform, and filtering is done by arithmetic. The filtering
arithmetic uses the numbers in the stream to solve equations that describe the
effects of the cavities and tubes that form the vocal tract--the filter.
Klatt's synthesizers, KLSYN and KLSYN88, are computer programs used at
universities where speech is studied. Sensimetrics distributes its own,
updated version of KLSYN, based on Klatt's research, to the research community
                                as SenSyn.

                                The origin of HLsyn
KLSYN uses more than fifty-five parameters to generate speech, of which about
forty need to be adjusted continuously during speech. The remaining dozen set
certain talker characteristics and generally do not need to be changed once
set. Not all of the forty variable parameters need to be adjusted at the same
time, but when a formant synthesizer is made to speak, all forty need to be
                                considered by the researcher.

This process was examined a few years ago by Dr. Kenneth Stevens, a colleague
of Klatt's who heads speech research at MIT's Research Laboratory of
Electronics, and is one of the founders of Sensimetrics. After discussion,
Stevens and Klatt decided that a small number of parameters might allow speech
synthesis that was more realistic than the results obtainable with KLSYN.
Klatt was unable to participate in the development of this idea, due to
illness. However, with funding from the SBIR program of the National
Institutes of Health (NIDCD), Stevens and others in the speech group at
Sensimetrics pursued the idea of high-level synthesis, seeking a minimal set
of parameters required to synthesize fully detailed individual human speech.

The result is a new synthesizer, HLsyn. Work is now proceeding, with
continuing NIH-SBIR support, on a new system, HLTalk, that will automatically
convert text to clear, natural-sounding speech.

The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night
sky above their heads - so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now
only five individuals stand between the killer robots of Krikkit and their
goals of annihilation. They are Arthur Dent, a mild mannered space and time
traveller, who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and
missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend who decides to go insane to see if he
likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vice president of the campaign for
Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behaviour; Zaphod
Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-head honcho of the universe; and
Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God
                                and a very depressed Beeblebrox.

"Arthur's first sensations of hope and trepidation had instantly been
overwhelmed by astonishment, and all sorts of thoughts were battling for the
use of his vocal cords at the moment."

"He stood up straight and looked the world squarely in the fields and hills.
To add weight to his words he stuck the rabbit bone in his beard. He spread
                                  his arms out wide.
'I will go mad!' he announced."

"Arthur felt happy. He was terribly pleased that the day was for once working
out so much according to plan. Only twenty minutes ago he had decided he would
go mad, and now here he was already chasing a Chesterfield sofa across the
                                  fields of prehistoric Earth."

"Fine,' said Arthur, and his consciousness stepped out again for a quick
breather. His body flopped back on the grass."

"His face froze for a second of two and then began to do that terribly slow
crashing trick that Arctic ice floes do spectacularly well in the spring."

"Arthur had adopted his normal crisis role, which was to stand with his mouth
hanging open and let it all wash over him."

"Arthur lay in startled stillness on the acceleration couch. He wasn't certain
whether he had just got space-sickness or religion."

"Arthur nodded wisely to himself. After a while he realized that this wasn't
getting him anywhere and decided that he would say 'What?' after all."

"He lay, panting heavily in the wet air, and tried feeling bits of himself to
see where he might be hurt. Wherever he touched himself, he encountered a
pain. After a short while he worked out that this was because it was his hand
                                  that was hurting."

"Ah,' effervesced the little man, 'and did you have a wonderful time?'
Arthur started to choke violently on his drink.
'What a wonderfully exciting cough, 'said the little man, quite startled by
it, 'do you mind if I join you?'
And with that he launched into the most extraordinary and spectacular fit of
coughing that caught Arthur so much by surprise that he started to choke
violently, discovered that he was already doing it and got thoroughly
confused. Together they performed a lung-busting duet that went on for fully
two minutes before Arthur managed to cough and splutter to a halt."

"Well, so am I alive, aren't I?' retaliated Arthur, haggard with adventure and
anger. His eyebrows were leaping up and down as if they wanted to punch each
                                  other."

"His fingers fumbled to release the safety catch and engage the extreme danger
catch as Ford had shown him. He was shaking so much that if he'd fired at
anybody at that moment he probably would have burned his signature on them."

"Arthur yawed wildly as his skin tried to jump one way and his skeleton the
other, while his brain tried to work out which of his ears it most wanted to
                                  crawl out of."

"Bet you weren't expecting to see me again,' said the monster, which Arthur
couldn't help thinking was a strange remark for it to make, seeing that he had
never met the creature before. He could tell that he hadn't met the creature
before from the simple fact that he was able to sleep at nights."

"He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there
was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an
                                  afterlife."

Explanation: Why do many galaxies appear as spirals? A striking example is
M101, shown above, whose relatively close distance of about 22 million light
years allow it to be studied in some detail. Recent evidence indicates that a
close gravitational interaction with a neighboring galaxy created waves of
high mass and condensed gas which continue to orbit the galaxy center. These
waves compress existing gas and cause star formation. One result is that M101,
also called the Pinwheel Galaxy, has several extremely bright star-forming
regions (called HII regions) spread across its spiral arms. M101 is so large
that its immense gravity distorts smaller nearby galaxies.

          STRINDBERG, SWEDENBORG OCH TEOSOFIN.
          Swedenborg
förändring i själens inre tillstånd.

omnämns i scenanvisningarna.

The Thirteen Articles of Jewish faith are as follows:

Belief in the existence of the Creator, be He Blessed, who is perfect in every
manner of existence and is the Primary Cause of all that exists.
The belief in G-d's absolute and unparalleled unity.
The belief in G-d's noncorporeality, nor that He will be affected by any
physical occurrences, such as movement, or rest, or dwelling.
          The belief in G-d's eternity.
The imperative to worship Him exclusively and no foreign false gods.
The belief that G-d communicates with man through prophecy.
The belief that the prophecy of Moses our teacher has priority.
The belief in the divine origin of the Torah.
The belief in the immutability of the Torah.
The belief in divine omniscience and providence.
The belief in divine reward and retribution.
The belief in the arrival of the Messiah and the messianic era.
The belief in the resurrection of the dead.
It is the custom of many congregations to recite the Thirteen Articles, in a
slightly more poetic form, beginning with the words Ani Maamin - "I believe" -
every day after the morning prayers in the synagogue.

In his commentary on the Mishnah (Sanhedrin, chap. 10), Maimonides refers to
these thirteen principles of faith as "the fundamental truths of our religion
          and its very foundations."

            Bagdad
This city was founded on the Tigris by the second Abbaside Caliph Abou Giafar
al Mansur (762 or 764) and named by him Medinet es-Selam, or City of
Salvation; Bagdad is a popular name said to mean "Garden of Dat", a Mussulman
dervish. During five centuries it was the rich and brilliant capital of the
famous Arabian Empire. Houlagou, a grandson of Genghis Khan, entered it in
1262; it afterwards became a possession of the Kara Koyouli Turks, was taken
by Tamerlane, and, in 1517, fell into the hands of the Persians who, except
for a short interval in the sixteenth century, ruled over it until 1638, when
Sultan Murad made it definitively a city of the Ottoman Empire. It is now the
chief town of a vilayet, or district, of the same name, and has lost much of
its former importance, though it still remains the most important city of
Asiatic Turkey, after Damascus and Smyrna, and a great emporium of
international trade. It exports textile fabrics, gold and silverware, horses,
dates, etc. There are many beautiful mosques in the city, and the ruins of its
ancient walls are still visible. The climate is hot; fevers are frequent, and
the plague sometimes appears. Its population, taken as including the
neighbouring villages, is said to be about 45,000; of these 86,000 are
Mussulmans, mostly Arab Sunnites and Persian Shiites; 52,000 are Jews, and
7,000 Christians. Turkish statistics, however, are usually very uncertain. The
Christians are divided as follows: 3,300 Armenians (including about 1,000
            Catholics and 100 Protestants), 100 Greeks (50 Catholics); 1,600 (3,000?)
Chaldeans; 1,200 Syrians; and 500 Latins.

In 1638, some days after the Turkish conquest, owing to the kindness of Abbas
the Great, Urban VIII created, at the expense of a pious French lady, a Latin
bishopric for the Catholics in Persia, under the title of Babylon, the old
city being then (though erroneously) identified with Bagdad. For a long time
the bishops of this title, when they came to the East, resided at Hamadan, in
Persia, and for various reasons there were often no bishops, but only vicars
Apostolic. It was only in 1742 that Père Joseph-Marie de Jésus, a Carmelite,
was allowed to enter this Mussulman town. In 1848 the see became an
archbishopric, with Ispahan as a suffragan see, till 1874; the archbishop,
Monsignor Trioche, was appointed Apostolic Delegate for the Catholics of
Oriental rites. He resigned this office in 1850, and until his death, in 1887,
there were special delegates, the last of whom, Monsignor Altmayer, succeeded
him and reunited both titles, as did his successor, Monsignor Jean Drure. We
must here, moreover, notice that the Latin Archbishop of Bagdad, according to
the decree of Urban VII, must always be of French nationality.

                  Harpo är den okontrollerbara libidon
                  Chico verbaliserar det omedvetna
                  Groucho representerar överjaget

Fanny Söderbäck funderar över bröderna Marx identitet(er).

På Judiska Museets utställning i Stockholm,"Andy Warhol – Ten Portraits of
Jews of the Twentieth Century", visades i höstas ett porträtt av bröderna
Marx.

Men hur ser då denna
kultur ut? Vilka är det som lever i den? Och hur skildrades den av bröderna
                  Marx?

representerar splittring.

Ambivalensen kanske bottnar i deras judiska identitet?

Groucho Marx was a master at delivering one-liners. He is quoted by many
                    people.
Below are just some of my favorite quotes.

                    _____________________________________________________________________________

How do you feel about women's rights ? I like either side of them.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and
                    then misapplying the wrong remedies.

Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you
have to do is live long enough.

Here's to our wives and girlfriends...may they never meet!

[Groucho]: A lot of good that'll do him. He's still got the same face.

I sent the club a wire stating, Please accept my resignation. I don't want to
belong to any club that will accept me as a member.

Send two dozen roses to Room 424 and put 'Emily, I love you' on the back of

I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception.

A man is as young as the woman he feels.

Anyone who says he can see through women is missing a lot.

I didn't like the play, but then I saw it under adverse conditions-the curtain
                    was up.

Now there's a man with an open mind - you can feel the breeze from here!

There's one way to find out if a man is honest-ask him. If he says 'yes,' you
                    know he is a crook.

A statement by Shaikh Ahmad Kuftaro, Grand Mufti of Syria and Head of the
Supreme Council of Fatwa, on the American, British and Zionist aggressive
campaign against the brotherly Iraqi people.

O free and honorable people of the world! Our nation is exposed to a new
chapter of aggressive campaigns and imperialistic projects whose objective is
to contain our nation’s civilization, culture, economy and religion. They are
waging this campaign under the umbrella of fragile pretexts and dazzlingly
false slogans not supported by reality, which belittle the minds of ordinary
people heedless of any international legitimacy.

This destructive, oppressive war is a crime against humanity and Divine laws.
It is in blatant defiance of international law, human conscience and world
opinion. It aims at blowing all the bridges of communication between East and
West and obliterating the spirit of tolerance, co-existence and human
fraternity. It threatens security, stability and world peace.

This atrocious war causes death and misery to hundreds of thousands of
innocent people. It destroys culture, civilization and ancient landmarks. It
deepens the feelings of hatred. It increases the incidence of violence at a
time when humanity is facing serious challenges in many vital fields.

O free and honorable people of the world! Humanity has suffered much from the
wailing, futile, destructive and aggressive wars of the previous century. Our
world does not need more wars, which are destructive to life and the
environment. Our world needs projects of relief, education, construction and
development to fight off poverty and illness.

It would have been better for the decision makers in this administration to
decide on peace and development as an alternative to destructive, aggressive
wars in which no one will be saved from their pain and grief. The cost of
these illegitimate wars is enough to solve many present human problems. We
draw your attention to the seriousness of these wars and imperialistic,
aggressive projects at the expense of security, stability and peace in the
Arab region, as well as the Islamic region and the world. They will cause
environmental and social collapse and will leave behind human ordeals, crises
and plights. It is high time that intelligent decision makers in the world knew
the importance of the respect for international law and the right of people to
freedom, self determination, and, a dignified and honorable life, and their
right to choose peace, development and the preservation of culture and
                  civilizational diversity.

It is high time that the Arab governments and people knew the importance of
coordination, common effort, solidarity and integration among them, and to
discard differences and malice and to make sacrifices in the national
interests when facing these challenges and the destructive, imperial, Zionist
projects, whose evils no one will be saved from.

It is high time that everyone knew that any shortcomings in fulfilling the
duties and responsibilities in supporting the causes of the one nation will
entice its greedy, ambitious enemies, waiting in the wings, to pounce on it
and destroy it when they like. Every individual of our nation must know that
our common responsibility is before Allah, history and generations. The very
success of the American, British and Zionist campaign will make our nation
face a new crisis that is not less than the Palestinian one. It will pave the
way for erecting an empire of despotism and coercion built on malicious,
racial and fundamentalist illusions and dreams. Therefore, I call for and
                  stress the following:

                  1. Resistance to the belligerent invaders is an obligation on each Muslim man
and woman, starting with the people of Iraq and then further afield, as the
                  need calls.

                  2. Muslims must use all possible means to repel the aggressors including
                  martyr operations.

                  3. Muslim all over the world must boycott American and British products and
                  those from coalition countries.

                  4. I call upon Muslims and all free citizens of the world to increase their
protests, demonstrations and strikes, to disrupt airports, harbors and other
facilities to nullify the war effort supporting this oppressive war to ensure
                  its defeat.

                  5. I call upon the governments that give aid and facilities against the
Muslims to stop immediately. They should know they are responsible before
                  Allah, history and mankind.

                  6. We value highly the stance of governments that have stood in the face of
this oppressive aggression, particularly France, Germany, Russia and the
Vatican. We appreciate and respect the courageous stance of all individuals
and peoples of the world at large who stand against this American, British and
Zionist aggression, particularly the people of the USA, Britain, Australia and
the West. We hold hands with them in solidarity and with peace-loving people
to build a civilized world, in which human rights are respected and in which
people live under the umbrella of the teachings of Heaven, which are love,
fraternity and cooperation instead of slaughter, destruction and aggression.

portfoliom, and I need 2 bits of info:
1)How did Dunk die? Was it a car bomb? A sniper?
      2) Did he use shadowrunners for protrection or something like that?
      Thanks guys

Dunkelzahn wasn't assassinated - he commited suicide to power up the Dragon
Heart - an artifact that, compared to the current, relatively low, mana level
simply would not have been possible. However the Life Magic (or, as some would
call it: "variant of blood magic") that the big D used when he croaked allowed
it to activate before its time.
1.) What happened IIRC was a car bomb (he stepped into his Limo in human form
after his inauguration party and BOOM!), contained by a mighty barrier spell
to protect innocent bystanders. Whatever he did besides that to make the
      martyr-trick, I don't know.
2.) Dunno - probably not. He should have had plenty of Secret service Guys
scurrying around him for protection - he was the president after all...

      OK, thaks.
I was thinking about them working in the scene to track down a conspiracy to
kill dunkie or something the sort in the moment he actually suicided. I really
want them to be there, then. Could it be possible¿?

I would imagine ALOT of people wanted him gone.
I imagine ALOT of people went around trying many different ways to off him.
Some half serious, some quite serious.

Just remember that he didn't just have the SS with him. He had all his various
friends there, and they wouldn't take kindly to anyone even thinking of offing
      him.

An attempt would be feasible, but pretty complicated, and not something your
average runner would be part of.

I still would have preferred it if it had been a genuine assassination
attempt. Explaining it off as an act of martyrdom to save the world (though
only for a few hundred years) was just tacky. He had already seen two
Scourges and survived them both... another would have been child's play, even
if it had come early, and he could have done more as a leader to help
encourage us to prepare for it than he did by commiting suicide.
Just another example of hacked-together writing in my opinion. "Let's see,
we're tired of writing about Dunklezahn, so let's kill him. Oh yeah, we also
have these Earthdawn links we want to kill, so let's come up with a way of
      doing 'em together.. yeah!" Bleh.

      Ehh...
It would have been good to keep him alive for a few years.

Show off the presidency, all that, but what can you do?

You may not agree with it, but it's history. And you have to cope with the
fact that he DID in fact blow himself up.

          The House of Saud.

Back to the Terrorist's Supporters Page

By Tom Gross, a British journalist who has spent the past six years reporting
          from the Mideast
          February 8, 2002 8:40 a.m.

n his State of the Union address last week, President Bush indicated where the
war on terror is heading. Iraq, Iran, North Korea, "and their terrorist allies
constitute an axis of evil," he declared. Bush received considerable praise
from the pundits. Charles Krauthammer, for example, congratulated him on
an "astonishingly bold address" which was "about preventing the next Sept.
11." The prime target, it was generally agreed, would be Iraq.

Yet it has been clear since September 11 — and actually since well before
then — that if America wants to prevent a major terrorist onslaught, there is
one government above all others that must be reformed or replaced. And it is
not that of Saddam, but the House of Saud.

The Saudi regime — not merely its exiled son, Osama bin Laden — bears a major
share of the responsibility for international terrorism. Further acts of
terror against Americans, of the kind seen in Africa, Yemen, New York, and
Washington, are likely to follow unless some serious pressure is placed on
Riyadh both to stop sponsoring Islamic extremists, and to allow moderates some
          significant role in government.

The Saudis aid terrorism both directly and indirectly. On the direct level,
they fund — at government and at private levels — Islamic terrorist groups
throughout the world. For example, evidence uncovered in Afghanistan by
British and American intelligence officers clearly implicates a number of
leading Saudis, some of them members of the royal family, in the funding of al
          Qaeda.

The Saudi government is also the chief financial backer of the Palestinian
terror group Hamas. It was members of Hamas who taught shoe-bomber Richard
Reid, who attempted to blow up an American Airlines jet, how to dry the
explosive triacetone triperoxide and mold it into shoes and belts. He received
this instruction when he visited Gaza last June.

In addition to providing support for terrorist groups, the Saudis have helped
to shape those groups' ideology by exporting an extreme form of Islamist
          philosophy.

The Saudis are also responsible for terror on an indirect level. By refusing
to permit any opposition to the regime other than that of the extremist imams,
who support bin Ladenism, they have virtually forced young Saudis who want to
express their opposition to the ruling family's brutal, corrupt ways into the
arms of those imams. The result — al Qaeda — merely mirrors their own lack of
          respect for life and humanity.

These extremists will eventually overthrow the regime if it doesn't reform.
Signs of dissent are growing. Just before Christmas, for example, 1,000 young
men were reported to have rioted in Jeddah.

The Saudi regime regularly dishonors the moderate Islamic tradition with its
beheadings, amputations, and floggings. Its appalling treatment of women (the
religious police patrol the streets with electric camel prods, on the lookout
for women exposing a little too much under their chadors), the vile anti-
Semitism and Holocaust denial that permeate the state-controlled media, and
the general lack of tolerance for Christians and Jews — in all these respects,
the Saudis are worse than Iran or Iraq.

When it comes to inciting Islamic extremism, too, the Saudi record is in many
respects worse than Iraq or Iran. It is no accident that the Saudis enjoyed
warm relations with the Taliban long after Teheran broke ties. As Abdullah Al
Refaie, editor-in-chief of the Saudi paper Al Muslimoon, put it: "The Iranian
claim that the Taliban have discredited Islam is simply not true. The Taliban,
in fact, have a good record of behaving as faithful and moderate Muslims."

The Saudi regime's brutal record of torture is ignored by the West — even when
Britons, Belgians, and Canadians are the victims, as was the case last year.
As the British media revealed last month, during a 67-day period of torture,
Saudi police hung from the ceiling a middle-aged British man who was being
held on trumped-up charges, beat him with a pickaxe handle, and threatened to
have his wife repeatedly gang-raped until he confessed.

And yet the Saudi government is often described by American media (Bob's Note:
the Government-Media Complex) and politicians as "moderate" and "our
partners," and is subject to much flattery from American and British halls of
government. As with the Palestinian Authority, reports about the true extent
of the awfulness of the Saudi regime are largely ignored by the Western media,
creating a dangerously misleading impression of the regime. Last week, for
example, the New York Times sub-headlined its news interview with Crown Prince
Abdullah, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia: "Dispensing wisdom, receiving
          praise."

Western governments have spent far too long propping up the regime in Riyadh,
as they have the one in Gaza, on the principle that the alternative would be
worse. But in fact, there are plenty of moderate voices, among both the Saudis
and the Palestinians, who are desperate to find Western support but too
terrified to speak out against their native regimes.

To say the Saudis have been less than fully cooperative in the war on
terrorism would be an understatement. The lack of meaningful criticism or
rebuke from the U.S. to Riyadh for the fact that 15 of the 19 suicide
hijackers were Saudis (and at least one entered the U.S. on a Saudi diplomatic
passport) — a fact the Saudis only acknowledged this week — that over 100 of
the 158 detainees being held in U.S. custody at Guantanamo Bay are Saudis,
that 240 of the 250 al Qaeda prisoners Pakistan is holding are Saudis — this
is surely one of the main reasons why the Saudi ruling class are continuing to
fund al Qaeda and other Islamic terror groups.

Citing Western intelligence sources, Turkish, German, and British newspapers
all last month reported that Saudi intelligence is currently financing the
relocation of thousands of al Qaeda insurgents to Lebanon, the West Bank, and
Gaza. The German daily Die Welt reported last Wednesday that Saudi officials
have helped place many of them in the Ein Hilwe Palestinian refugee camp in
Lebanon, and plan to finance their relocation to territory controlled by
Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority. (Not unrelated, Die Welt also reported
that it was Saudi intelligence that paid Iran $10 million to buy the weapons
for the Palestinian Authority that were captured by Israel in the Red Sea on
          January 3.)

Indeed it is the Saudis, not the Iraqis, who one way or another leave their
fingerprints on virtually every major development among Muslim terrorists.
Take, for example, the recent use of women suicide bombers against Israeli
civilians. The Islamic authorities in Gaza have so far ordered only men, not
women, to blow up Israeli teenagers. The Palestinians behind these recent
female attacks (only one of which was "successful") cite as their inspiration
last August's fatwa, issued by the Saudi High Islamic Council, exhorting women
          to become suicide bombers.

Even with the Taliban's collapse, ideological justifying of the September 11
attacks (and of similar future acts) continues among Saudis. Consider, for
example, Saudi Sheikh Safar Abd Al-Rahman Al-Hawali as quoted in Al-Hayat, a
London-based Arabic daily, on January 13, 2002: "Since when is the
Pentagon 'innocent'? The famous American intellectual Gore Vidal himself
called it 'Hell and a nest of Satans'... [It is] a den of spies and a Mafia
          nest." He went

          History
          Origins
The Ottoman state began as one of many small Turkish states that emerged in
Asia Minor during the breakdown of the empire of the Seljuk Turks. The Ottoman
Turks began to absorb the other states, and during the reign (1451–81) of
Muhammad II they ended all other local Turkish dynasties. The early phase of
Ottoman expansion took place under Osman I, Orkhan, Murad I, and Beyazid I at
the expense of the Byzantine Empire, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Bursa fell in 1326
and Adrianople (the modern Edirne) in 1361; each in turn became the capital of
the empire. The great Ottoman victories of Kosovo (1389) and Nikopol (1396)
placed large parts of the Balkan Peninsula under Ottoman rule and awakened
Europe to the Ottoman danger. The Ottoman siege of Constantinople was lifted
at the appearance of Timur, who defeated and captured Beyazid in 1402. The
          Ottomans, however, soon rallied.

          The Period of Great Expansion
The empire, reunited by Muhammad I, expanded victoriously under Muhammad's
successors Murad II and Muhammad II. The victory (1444) at Varna over a
crusading army led by Ladislaus III of Poland was followed in 1453 by the
capture of Constantinople. Within a century the Ottomans had changed from a
nomadic horde to the heirs of the most ancient surviving empire of Europe.
Their success was due partly to the weakness and disunity of their
adversaries, partly to their excellent and far superior military organization.
Their army comprised numerous Christians—not only conscripts, who were
organized as the corps of Janissaries, but also volunteers. Turkish expansion
reached its peak in the 16th cent. under Selim I and Sulayman I (Sulayman the
          Magnificent).

The Hungarian defeat (1526) at Mohács prepared the way for the capture (1541)
          of Buda and the absorption of the major part of Hungary by the Ottoman Empire;
Transylvania became a tributary principality, as did Walachia and Moldavia.
The Asian borders of the empire were pushed deep into Persia and Arabia. Selim
I defeated the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, took Cairo in 1517, and assumed the
succession to the caliphate. Algiers was taken in 1518, and Mediterranean
commerce was threatened by corsairs, such as Barbarossa, who sailed under
Turkish auspices. Most of the Venetian and other Latin possessions in Greece
          also fell to the sultans.

During the reign of Sulayman I began (1535) the traditional friendship between
France and Turkey, directed against Hapsburg Austria and Spain. Sulayman
reorganized the Turkish judicial system, and his reign saw the flowering of
Turkish literature, art, and architecture. In practice the prerogatives of the
sultan were limited by the spirit of Muslim canonical law (sharia), and he
usually shared his authority with the chief preserver (sheyhülislam) of the
sharia and with the grand vizier (chief executive officer).

In the progressive decay that followed Sulayman's death, the clergy (ulema)
and the Janissaries gained power and exercised a profound, corrupting
influence. The first serious blow by Europe to the empire was the naval defeat
of Lepanto (1571; see Lepanto, battle of), inflicted on the fleet of Selim II
by the Spanish and Venetians under John of Austria. However, Murad IV in the
17th cent. temporarily restored Turkish military prestige by his victory
(1638) over Persia. Crete was conquered from Venice, and in 1683 a huge
Turkish army under Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa surrounded Vienna. The relief of
Vienna by John III of Poland and the subsequent campaigns of Charles V of
Lorraine, Louis of Baden, and Eugene of Savoy ended in negotiations in 1699
(see Karlowitz, Treaty of), which cost Turkey Hungary and other territories.

          Decline
The breakup of the state gained impetus with the Russo-Turkish Wars in the
18th cent. Egypt was only temporarily lost to Napoleon's army, but the Greek
War of Independence and its sequels, the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–29 (see
Adrianople, Treaty of), and the war with Muhammad Ali of Egypt resulted in the
loss of Greece and Egypt, the protectorate of Russia over Moldavia and
Walachia, and the semi-independence of Serbia. Drastic reforms were introduced
in the late 18th and early 19th cent. by Selim III and Mahmud II, but they
came too late. By the 19th cent. Turkey was known as the Sick Man of Europe.

Through a series of treaties of capitulation from the 16th to the 18th cent.
the Ottoman Empire gradually lost its economic independence. Although Turkey
was theoretically among the victors in the Crimean War, it emerged from the
war economically exhausted. The Congress of Paris (1856) recognized the
independence and integrity of the Ottoman Empire, but this event marked the
confirmation of the empire's dependency rather than of its rights as a
          European power.

The rebellion (1875) of Bosnia and Hercegovina precipitated the Russo-Turkish
War of 1877–78, in which Turkey was defeated despite its surprisingly vigorous
stand. Romania (i.e., Walachia and Moldavia), Serbia, and Montenegro were
declared fully independent, and Bosnia and Hercegovina passed under Austrian
administration. Bulgaria, made a virtually independent principality, annexed
          (1885) Eastern Rumelia with impunity.

Sultan Abd al-Majid, who in 1839 issued a decree containing an important body
of civil reforms, was followed (1861) by Abd al-Aziz, whose reign witnessed
the rise of the liberal party. Its leader, Midhat Pasha, succeeded in deposing
(1876) Abd al-Aziz. Abd al-Hamid II acceded (1876) after the brief reign of
Murad V. A liberal constitution was framed by Midhat, and the first Turkish
parliament opened in 1877, but the sultan soon dismissed it and began a rule
of personal despotism. The Armenian massacres (see Armenia) of the late 19th
cent. turned world public opinion against Turkey. Abd al-Hamid was victorious
in the Greco-Turkish war of 1897, but Crete, which had been the issue, was
          ultimately gained by Greece.

          Collapse
In 1908 the Young Turk movement, a reformist and strongly nationalist group,
with many adherents in the army, forced the restoration of the constitution of
1876, and in 1909 the parliament deposed the sultan and put Muhammad V on the
throne. In the two successive Balkan Wars (1912–13), Turkey lost nearly its
entire territory in Europe to Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and newly independent
Albania. The nationalism of the Young Turks, whose leader Enver Pasha gained
virtual dictatorial power by a coup in 1913, antagonized the remaining
          minorities in the empire.

The outbreak of World War I found Turkey lined up with the Central Powers.
Although Turkish troops succeeded against the Allies in the Gallipoli campaign
(1915), Arabia rose against Turkish rule, and British forces occupied (1917)
Baghdad and Jerusalem. In 1918, Turkish resistance collapsed in Asia and
Europe. An armistice was concluded in October, and the Ottoman Empire came to
an end. The Treaty of Sèvres (see Sèvres, Treaty of) confirmed its
dissolution. With the victory of the Turkish nationalists, who had refused to
accept the peace terms and overthrew the sultan in 1922, modern Turkey's
          history began.

Many citizens believe Saddam has mystical powers
                  By Sudarsan Raghavan
                  Mercury News

UMM QASR, Iraq - Ahmed Ali believes Saddam Hussein can never die. All his
life, the 23-year-old laborer has heard about the dictator's powerful stone.

Saddam, the story goes, had the stone made shortly after he came to power 24
years ago. Its powers were first tested inside a chicken. One of his soldiers
pulled out a gun and shot a bullet at point-blank range. The chicken's
feathers fell off, but it lived.

So the dictator implanted the stone in his upper arm.

As the curtain falls on Saddam's reign, many ordinary Iraqis are reluctant to
believe that their much-feared dictator has lost power, much less that he is
actually dead. Stories abound of Saddam's mystical powers that have helped him
elude assassination attempts and missile strikes.

``The stone makes him bulletproof,'' Ali, a slim man with a Saddam-style
mustache, said in a serious voice.

That belief, common throughout Iraq, presents uncommon challenges for U.S. and
British forces as they try to persuade Iraqis that Saddam is gone and will not
return. Without a body to display, it may be impossible to overcome the
mythical creation of a propaganda apparatus that was bent on showing he was a
worthy heir to a long line of Babylonian kings.

                  No word on fate

Wednesday, there was no word on Saddam's fate. U.S. officials have said they
believe he was in a building in Baghdad when it was bombed Monday afternoon.
British media reports quoted sources saying they believed Saddam had left the
building before the bombing. Ahmed Chalabi, an Iraqi exile leader who was
returned this week by U.S. forces to Iraq, told CNN that Saddam is in Baqubah,
                  northeast of Baghdad.

``People won't believe the regime has ended until they are certain Saddam is
dead,'' said Mohammad Nasar, a doctor at Basra Teaching Hospital. ``They need
                  to see his body.''

An intricate web of Baath party officials, spies and informants in even the
smallest village in Iraq created a feeling that Saddam is watching and
listening on every conversation. And his use of doubles who strikingly
resemble him has only perpetuated his mythical status, particularly among poor
                  illiterate villagers.

``Many average people here fear Saddam,'' said Ayat Jabar, 28, an Iraqi
soldier who deserted in the village of Shuaiba. ``He doesn't even have to be
here. They fear his ghost. Even now people are probably thinking he's watching
me while I talk to you.''

Reports that Saddam was killed in U.S. bombing attacks are lies to many.

``He has seven spirits. He doesn't die,'' said Adnan Mohammad Yousef, 32,
                  another army deserter.

Yousef told a story about Saddam's supernatural luck.

One of his elite Republican Guards tried to assassinate him at point-blank
range. But the trigger on his gun got stuck as he pointed it at Saddam. The
dictator grabbed the gun and said, ``This is how you do it.''

                  Then he killed the soldier.

``It's well-known that Saddam's mother is a magician,'' Yousef said.

Saad Abdel Rida, 19, has also heard about Saddam's stone. It's blue, he said,
and Saddam got it from a fortuneteller he visits often. Spirits from the
underworld talk to Saddam through the fortuneteller, informing him who's
planning to kill him, said Rida, a college student.

                  `He has the stone'

At a bus stand in Basra, Jasim Way, 54, doesn't believe the regime has ended --
even though he sees British troops and tanks on every corner of the city.

``He has the stone,'' said Way, wearing a red-and-white checkered Arab head
scarf. ``You shoot him and he doesn't die.''

Next to him Jawal Kazem, 60, laughed and said: ``Saddam makes these stories
up. He feels happy that these stories are out there. It's another way to hurt
the people. But it's all an illusion.''

Inside a crumbling apartment building a few miles away, Mohammad Sadek, 43, a
teacher, smiles. He, too, has heard the story of the stone. But he doesn't
                  believe it.

``People are very poor,'' he said. ``They'll believe anything.''

Then Sadek said something he would never have said publicly a few days ago:
Saddam intentionally creates this image of immortality to make Iraqis fear
him. Yet Sadek, too, finds it hard to believe that Saddam can be captured or
                  killed.

``I think he'll disappear like Osama bin Laden,'' he said.

Aboud Muttar, 60, a shepherd, knows Saddam is human. ``There's no one who has
                  seven lives,'' he said.

But Muttar, who has spent more than half his life under the power of the
Baathist regime, said it would take much convincing for him to believe Saddam
                  is dead.

``I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes,'' he said.
