The First Physical Theatre Company

03.08.03, 17:43
The First Physical Theatre Company's latest danceplay, hot off
the Grahamstown festival fringe, plays for three nights only at
the Rhodes Box Theatre, Grahamstown, this weekend.

Under the artistic directorship of Gary Gordon and choreographed
by the company's core group of artists, Nicola Haskins, Zoey
Lapinsky, Zingisani Mkefa, and Bailey Snyman, "The Man Behind the
Canvas" delves into the surrealist world of Salvador Dali. This
fascinating work reveals the darkly humorous aspects of the man
and his canvas incorporating dance, mime, music, song and
original text by Andrew Buckland and Reza de Wet.

The Theatre Cafe offering excellent light meals and drinks will
be open Friday until late and Saturday and Sunday from 5 pm until
late. Make an occasion of it!

"The Man Behind the Canvas" is on at the Box Theatre on Friday
the 1st at 6pm, Saturday the 2nd at 8pm and Sunday the 3rd at
6pm. Tickets are R20 and R15 (concessions). Bookings: phone 622
- 3897 or e-mail First.Physical@ru.ac.za.

    • maciej_florek London Guild Theatre 26.08.03, 17:10
The First Physical Theatre Company visits the East London Guild Theatre for the
second time this year with a short programme of dance works from the company's
      ten
year repertoire - an ideal chance to get a glimpse into works produced by the
      First
      Physical Theatre Company since 1993.

With choreography by London-based Clare Baker, Andrew Buckland, Artistic
      Director
Gary Gordon, and members of the company, "Re-Collections" includes three works
specially chosen for First Physical's touring company.

"... toiling to the dance of the sun ..." was first choreographed and performed
      in 1993 by
Buckland and Gordon. The text by Buckland, a creation myth, is complemented by
      the
original designs by Lindy Roberts, now resident in New Zealand. The company
      has
continued its collaborations with Roberts over the past two years, and is
      pleased to re-
create one of her first design concepts for the company.

Gordon and Baker's "Resting in the Trees" was originally choreographed in
      London
before its South African premiere on the main programme at the 1997 National
      Arts
Festival. It toured twice to Cape Town and was described by Peter Frost of the
      Cape
Times as "a sumpremely professional foray into the realms of freedom, release,
      constraints and dreams."

"Moments from this place" is the company's latest work choreographed by Nicola
Haskins, Zoey Lapinsky, and Bailey Snyman. Inspired by the landscape of the
      Eastern
Cape and choreographed to the music of Phillip Miller and a re-arrangement of
      JS Bach
in collaboration with traditional musicians from Gabon, "Moments from this
      place" is the
ninetieth work produced by the company since its inception in 1993.

"Re-Collections" runs for three nights only at the Guild Theatre on Monday 1
      September
at 7.30 pm, Tuesday 2 September at 8.30 pm, and Wednesday 3 September at 7.30
      pm. Tickets are R 20 and R 12 concessions. Bookings at the Guild on 043 - 743
      0704.

Recollections of ten years of physical intelligence

The First Physical Theatre Company has added a fourth work, "Money", to their
touring programme which runs at the Rhodes Theatre on Friday 19 and Saturday 20
      September.

After performances at the Amahlathi Festival and the Guild Theatre, First
      Physical
presents "Re-Collections", a programme of dance works from the company's ten
      year
repertoire, in Grahamstown before touring to the Hogsback Festival, the Knysna
Festival, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the First Physical Theatre Company
      has
established itself uniquely in Grahamstown as a centre for innovation and
collaboration in contemporary dance and theatrical invention.

With choreography by London-based Clare Baker, Andrew Buckland, Artistic
      Director
Gary Gordon, and members of the company, "Re-Collections" includes four works
specially chosen for First Physical's touring company.

"Money" choreographed by Gary Gordon in 1999 is "pure fun" (Cape
      Argus), "Gordon
lite ... stylishly splashing about a the lolly" (The Star), and a delightfully
      frivolous romp
recreated for the second time this year, this time for four performers.

"... toiling to the dance of the sun ..." was first choreographed and performed
      in 1993
by Buckland and Gordon. The text by Buckland, a creation myth, is complemented
      by
the original designs by Lindy Roberts, now resident in New Zealand.
