Australia has recorded its second-highest monthly trade deficit on record,
with the trade gap with the rest of the world blowing out by $500 million in
July to $2.75 billion.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the seasonally adjusted deficit,
substantially above market expectations, was driven by a drop in exports
following a gradual recovery during the first half of the year.
Exports fell three per cent in July, allowing for seasonal factors, with farm
exports down six per cent.
And shoppers cashed up by tax cuts and bonus family benefit payments drew in
one per cent more imports, with higher fuel prices also playing a role.
The July deficit falls just $250 million short of the record $3 billion
deficit recorded in December 2002 and will come as a nasty shock for the
government on the third day of the election campaign.
