SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Computer and printer maker Hewlett-Packard Co and
Linux software distributor Red Hat Inc. (Nasdaq:RHAT - news) said on Tuesday
they had struck an agreement making HP a preferred provider of services to
support Red Hat's Linux offerings for large corporate customers.

HP rivals International Business Machines Corp. and falling Dell Computer
Corp. already have similar status with Red Hat, said Mike Evans, vice
president of channel sales and development for Raleigh, North Carolina-based
Red Hat.


Linux, a variant of the venerable Unix operating system, is freely available,
and tens of thousands of software developers contribute to it. It has emerged
as a threat not only to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system, but also
to proprietary operating systems used by IBM, HP and Sun Microsystems Inc.

Until recently, Linux had been making big gains on the so-called edge of a
company's computer infrastructure, but now it is also making headway into the
more sophisticated, mission-critical portions of a company's computer systems,
such as data centers and transaction processing, analysts have said.


"As Linux is becoming a bigger and bigger part of our business, it's now moving
fairly and squarely from a strong position in network-edge applications out
into more mainstream infrastructure and data-center-class applications," said
Hugh Jenkins, head of marketing for HP's industry-standard servers.


Industry standard servers are those that use Intel Corp. compatible chips,
known as x86, either with processors that crunch data in 32-bit chunks or with
Intel's Itanium 64-bit microprocessor.


Microprocessors are the brains of a personal computer, workstation, notebook
PC, server computer or mainframe computer.


The agreement, making Red Hat the preferred version of Linux that HP would sell
to customers, was not struck sooner because HP was still in the process of
integrating Compaq Computer, which it bought last May for $18.7 billion.


"HP is kind of a new company," Jenkins said. "While we had in both companies
pre-merger a great relationship with Red Hat, it was probably fair to say that
agreements were spread far and wide" throughout the two companies.


While HP said it would honor customers' requests to work with other Linux
vendors, the agreement could have a negative effect on other sellers of
Linux software, such as Conectiva SA, the SCO Group, SuSe Linux AG and
Turbolinux Inc., which together have formed a consortium called
United Linux.

Natomiast walka od jakiegos czasu zaczela sie o platforme
desktop gdzie Windows to ponad 90% rynku. Linuks wraz z wersja
RedHat 8.0 i SuSe rozpoczal walke o te platforme. Juz nie
wspominam o innych dystrybucjach ktore te walke podjely dawno,
ale bez takiego poparcia jak ma RedHat i Suse.

Może jakis Linuks w wersji 25.0 to i wyprze Windowsa czyli czekaj tatka latka.
Najpierw muszą sie skończyć problemy z instalacją nie tylko aplikacji ale i
samego linuksa.A to problem 1024 cylindra, a to inne duperele. Pewnie,że dla
informatyków to nie problem...

Od roku korzystam z Linuxa. To jest mój Gateway i Firewall, na którym lecą wszystkie możliwe standartowe aplikacje (jak samba, czy dhcpd), wyposażony w DSL i ISDN.
Wgralem go na system Pentium II 200 MHz, 128 MB RAM, były server Notesa u klienta.
Dzieki niemu nadzoruję rozmowy telefoniczne w obu kierunkach (koszty, nie treść, mam trzech dorastających synów), mam dojście do lokalnej sieci w domu (w domu stoi 6 pecetów). Na dopisanie do proxy firtrów uniemożliwiających dostęp do pornografii w przeglądarce (najmłodszy ma 11 lat, w sumie tylko o niego chodziło), ale poza tym udostępniających cały internet trzeba było jednego dnia.
System reguluje dostęp do internetu z kalendarzem i zegarkiem w ręku.
Od czasu edycji SuSE 8.2 łapię się za głowę: postępy są po prostu niepojęte. Sam nie jestem specem od linuxa (pieniądze zarabiam dzięki serverom Windows), ale mam dostęp do takich w mojej firmie. Dzięki nim staje się mi coraz jasne, że dla tego systemu nie ma rzeczy niemożliwych. Jedynym ograniczeniem jest moja ignorancja. To, co może Windows 2003, może linux już dawno. Praktycznie wszystko jest darmowe.

Teraz zaczynam zabawę w server multimedialny. Na końcu drugi PC z linuxem ma zastąpić settop-Box, Digital Disk Recorder z EPG, Server mp3, mpeg2 i 4, DVD. VCD, CD z pilotem, streaming server ma zająć się dystrybucją tych cudów (włącznie z sygnałem telewizyjnym) do dowolnego pomieszczenia w moim domu poprzez WLAN w jakości Dolby Digital. Wszystko (hardware) jest za stosunkowo niewielkie pieniądze do dostania. Wszystkie aplikacje chodzą za darmo pod linuxem.

Za 5 lat Microsoft ostanie się (może) na workstations i części serverów LAN. Ale i tam będzie okrążony przez morze linuxów w każdej skrzynce w domu - od lodówki i pralki, przez telofon do serverów multimedialnych, które już zaczynają zastępować tradycyjne centra HiFi.

Pytanie, czy linux może zagrozić Microsoft jest pytaniem retorycznym: przecież widać. że wierchuszka Microsoftu ma pełne gacie strachu!

sie nie zawiesil.
