Argentina are regarded as among the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup this
summer, yet some players from the South American country seem interested in
exploring less obvious avenues within international football.
Sensational start to European career
Four Argentinian players, including the highly-rated VfL Wolfsburg forward
Diego Klimowicz, have expressed their desire to play for the land of their
fathers, Ukraine. Klimowicz, who arrived in the 1. Bundesliga from AC Lanus
this season, has enjoyed a sensational start to his European career, scoring
ten times in his first 16 games. Previously the 27-year-old forward also played
for Rayo Vallecano and Real Valladolid in Spain.
'Flattered to join'
"I would be flattered to join the Ukraine squad, because this is the homeland
of my ancestors," Klimowicz said. "I know Ukrainians were looking at several
Argentinians, including me. I think this deserves to be discussed in detail."
Buryak admits interest
Ukraine coach Leonid Buryak has admitted his interest and is set to investigate
further the possibility of adding Klimowicz and three of his fellow countrymen
to his squad. "We know too little now, but we are certainly interested," he
said. "We will meet them and will try to find a common ground."
Poland joins the hunt
But, while Ukraine are hesitating, their more experienced neightbours Poland
are also showing an interest. The Poles, who made a valuable addition to their
squad when they naturalised Nigerian-born striker Emanual Olisadebe, have
joined the hunt for Klimowicz after finding out that his grandfather was born
in Poland.
Camps the next target
Aside from Klimowicz, Ukraine are also tracking the progress of three other
Argentinians - Patricio Camps of Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield, Club Atlético
Lanus player Julián Kmet and José Chatruc of Racing Club.
