Americans give Sweden key role in cyberwar

Sweden has a key role to the Americans in a future cyberwar, according to the daily Dagens Nyheter, which has seen another batch of classified documents uncovered by Wikileaks.

It is the US deputy ambassador to Sweden, Robert Silverman, who, when asked to identify important infrastructure around the world worthy of protecting, has recommended that the whole Swedish telecommunications network is put on the secret list in Washington.

Also a Swedish pharmaceutical company is mentioned in his report, which was written in 2009.

In the report, which ended up at the US department Homeland Security, Silverman notes that Sweden is central to the telecommunications in Europe, not the least the company Telia Sonera's fiber optic cables to the east. "If these lines of communication were destroyed, broken or exploited, it can damage the entire world's communications" he writes in the report, according to Dagens Nyheter.

Silverman's conclusion is that Sweden should be given a higher priority, which according to Dagens Nyheter also happens, as Sweden is allowed into the inner circle of a re-occurring cyber-war exercise called Cyber Storm. Sweden's role in this exercise is focused on information exchange, Rickard Oehme at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agencies, tells Dagens Nyheter. "It concerns functioning routes of contact. Who do you call when something happens?".

The press secretary of the Defence Minister Sten Tolgfors, Mikael Östlund says to Dagens Nyheter that the co-operation in no way influences Sweden's sovereignty or military non-alignment, but that it "strengthens Sweden's capacity in important areas".
