Which English?

IP: *.proxy.aol.com 08.10.03, 00:26
Wandering around Internet i came across a very interesting statement on
British English versus American English.
www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors
Q.: Why do you discuss mainly American usage?
A.: Because I'm an American, my students are mostly American, most English-
speaking Web users are Americans, and American English is quickly becoming an
international standard. [...] If the standard usage where you are differs
from what is described here, tell me about it, and if I think it's important
to do so, I'll note that fact. Meanwhile, just assume that this site is
primarily about American English. If you feel tempted to argue with me, click
here first [www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/america.html].

How about that? He dares to maintain that American English is at least as
standard as British English! And he is 100% right. Connect and read the whole
argument.

But it is obvious to everybody. Everything is American nowadays: movies, computers, internet, science, space research, business etc. So it is just natural that American English prevails. I don't think there is any doubt about it.

        Nice question actually

Speaking about phonetic system, GenAm has several advantages over RP. First, it
is more intuitive for foreigners - I think (this is just my opinion) that a
GenAm user will communicate abroad easier than an RP user - because of the
glottalisation and 'r liaison' in RP. Leaving out the 'r's' wreaks terrible
havoc :) when you talk to an intermediate-level English user.
Still, the RP is regarded as more 'sophisticated', so maybe there's a point of
teaching this standart to E.Philology students too...

Let us not forget to iron out the embarrassing wrinkles that this paragraph of
yours teems with before venturing expert opinions. For a speaker with
linguistic aspirations you are not doing too well in the basic grammar and
          coherence departments.
GenAm cannot speak about phonetic standards; if it could speak at all, it would
probably make you uncomfortable for reasons more fundamental than some details
          of phonetics.
It would put articles where they belong and would not itemize a single-item
argument. It would communicate ideas easily and without redundant repetitions -
all that without playing havoc with the intermediate-level English users.
Sophisticated or not, it would see little point in arguing the superiority of
          Christmas over Easter.

There is nothing to argue ebout since any Christian knows that it is Easter
            that is THE Christian holiday.

            Hey!

            This wasn't a chapter of a PhD, this wasn't a press article - this was a post
on a Forum... Written in a hurry, and definitely casual.
Contrary to your opinion, there is a point in discussing practical aspects of
            RP versus GenAm.
And finally: boy, is there a lot of people here who like teaching lessons!
            Relax, man!
