Chrysler Canada Inc. is the first major auto maker in the country to jack up
incentives in response to the soaring dollar and a recent consumer uproar over
lower prices in the United States.

Starting today, Chrysler will increase incentives for most models by as much
as $5,250 on cash purchases during the next month and slash monthly financing
and lease rates by equivalent values over the payment periods, the auto giant
said yesterday.


Amid rising evidence Canadian consumers are spending their soaring dollars
south of the border, two major Canadian retailers announced price cuts aimed
at keeping more shoppers at home.

Last week, Wal-Mart Canada announced several price reductions in advance of
back-to-school shopping, crediting many of the decreases to the appreciating
Canadian currency.

"Due to the stronger Canadian dollar, the company has renegotiated with
suppliers as part of its 2007 strategy to offer more rollbacks and savings than
ever before," said Wal-Mart Canada in a statement.

Spokesperson Christi Gallagher said the company has 20-per-cent more rollbacks
on a far wider range of goods than it did last year, mostly due to the dollar.

She points to Kraft Singles cheese slices, originally $3.97 and now $2.77, as
well as Charmin toilet paper, originally $11.48 and now $6.97, as notable
examples of price changes due mostly to the high-flying dollar.
