Every man Jack supposed that we have come to England for the mere purpose of
teaching them how to skive. It soon turns out, however, that we are but
average pupils of art, which had been mastered all over, from Orkney to
Peznzance.
The very first day in my company, I was taught how to prolong my lunch break
by cheating the clock. The procedure, a bit complicated, made use of rather
complicated way to the canteen and rather poor density of clock. But it
worked!
After one week (still working as a picker) I knew how to explain unsufficient
results and a low picking rate and how to leave the warehouse a quarter
earlier with the full pay (clock again).
Sick leave - another opportunity of skiving, favourite among English workers.
There are some tricks helping to avoid working for a couple of months,
without even being accused of any indecent deed.
I have not heard of anybody who was sacked for skiving. On the contrary -
Poles start working hard at once, hoping that they'll get a contract. If they
do not - it is just because they increase - quite unnecessarily - the rates...
