"A POLISH factory worker Tomasz Mamos got lost after going for drinks at a
friend's - and ended up driving on the wrong side of the A14 for several miles
in a bid to find his way home.

Motorist Simon Langridge, who was on his way to St Ives, was forced to take
avoiding action when he was suddenly confronted by Mamos' Ford Orion travelling
towards him at around 70mph.Mr Langridge called police.

It was not until highway agency officer James Mees - who found himself
travelling side-byside with the Pole on the opposite carriageway - put on his
blue emergency lights that Mamos pulled over.

Mr Mees vaulted the crash barrier and went to tell him he was on the wrong side
of the road. "The driver smiled and appeared to be aware of what he was doing
wrong and said he was sorry," the court was told.

Police who arrived on the scene smelt alcohol on him. He was over the limit with
58 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal level for
driving is 35 micrograms.

Mamos has been living in the UK for two years but has only recently begun to
drive here, the court heard. He had no idea where, or how, he joined the A14,
but had realised something was wrong when he began to be flashed by other vehicles.
