Enlargement — The 3rd of October
I cannot understand why our EU leaders
strive so much to accept Turkey with its nationalist
provocations and the military threat that it
constitutes to almost all its neighbours, including
a European country where a significant part
of the country is occupied since 30 years by
Turkey.
I cannot understand why our EU leaders can
claim that Turkey is progressing well towards
democracy when still today journalists and well
known Turkish writers are threatened to be
jailed or are in exile in the European Union
because they say the truth.
I cannot understand why our EU leaders can
be satisfied with the flagrant oppression that
Turkey imposes to its Christian and Jewish
minorities and with the continuous repression
of the aspirations for autonomy of 16 millions
Muslims Kurds.
After the 3rd October "Munich capitulation"
(in Luxembourg where our 25 EU leaders
have accepted to open the "negotiations"), the
Turkish authorities will more than ever continue
the policy they so much prefer and they will
not any more make any concession to the
Europeans, to democracy, to peace and to the
recognition of their criminal past.
Ronald Vopel reference to the excellent letter
that our colleague Argyrios Mammis sent to
Mr. Barroso is an invitation to talk about this
criminal past, which in my eyes is the most
important element to consider in this debate.
I am a European of Armenian origin. Around
500,000 Europeans of Armenian origin are like
me, the descendants of the survivors of the first
genocide of the twentieth century perpetrated by
the "Young Turks" authorities in Asia Minor.
During this genocide 1,500,000 Armenians (as
well as thousands of other Christians minorities:
in particular the Arameens) were slaughtered like
animals after incredible suffering, torture and
atrocities. Two thirds of the Armenian nation was
decimated, 2,000 churches and 600 villages were
destroyed. In 1915 the 3,000 years old historical
homeland of the Armenians was erased from the
maps. Several historians have demonstrated
rightly that this unpunished genocide has been a
precursor and example for the criminal authors of
the second genocide of the twentieth century.
It is not because I am of Armenian origin that
I am horrified by the decision of our leaders. It is
not because they want that the homeland of my
ancestors join Europe that I feel offended. It is not
because Turkey is in Asia, it is not because Turkey
is an underdeveloped country, it is not because
the Turks are Muslims. What horrifies me is not
Turkey, is not the Turks.
What horrifies me is that our leaders have
accepted to open the adhesion "negotiations”
with a negationist country without requesting
that it recognise and repair the Armenian
Genocide. Their silence on this genocide is a crime
and an insult to the Armenian nation and to all
the people who strive for justice.
A few days before October 3rd, for the fifth
time, the European Parliament has requested
that Turkey recognise the Armenian Genocide.
This was a great success for justice and dignity.
But our "Polit Bureau" did not want to adopt
the same line and did not want to consider the
recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the
conditions for accession.
On the 3rd of October, Mr. Straw, Mr.
Solana, Mr. Rehn, Mr. Barroso and most of the
other leaders (not so discreetly supported by
the Americans) were pleased to announce the
opening of the "negotiations" (I put "negotiation"
in quotes because I am sure that nothing
will be negotiated and everything will be done
to explain that the Turks are progressing well in
their preparation, whatever they will do). They
were pleased and happy to show the success of
their efforts. But is this day a success for
Europe? Popular support for Turkey’s EU accession
is very low: 22% of respondents from nine
EU countries surveyed in May and June want
Turkey to join, with support in France at just
11%. It is also for them an insult to see how
they are not listened (even when democratic
votes in France and in the Netherlands have
shown their opposition).
I do therefore think that the Commission
should not ignore for too long the will of the
European Parliament, and should not go on not
listening to the European citizens. It is its credibility
and its honour which are at stake. On the
3rd of October Europe shot herself in its foot.
Let us hope that its "Polit Bureau" will not shoot
in its head by going on behaving against the
will of the peoples of Europe.
