"Alternative brand Balmain is back in the fragrance spotlight with a
new item coming in late March: AMBRE GRIS. The bottle: a sleek,
retro style for a cube-shaped bottle and a golden cap that calls to
mind the top of a walking stick (or a golf ball). Described as ‘a
lovely, feminine woodsy-oriental,’ the sweet and spicy juice (myrrh,
cinnamon, pink pepper, benzoin, immortal blossom), is just barely
floral (thanks to a touch of tuberose at the heart) over a lush,
velvety, ever-so-slightly animal-like drydown (the eponymous
ambergris). The overall effect is unusual, yet reminiscent of some
oriental-fougère scents for men. Indeed, this could be for men, too.
