"This September will see the introduction of Ma Dame, Jean Paul
Gaultier’s first women’s fragrance since the launch of Fragile in
1999.
Developed by Shiseido-owned Beauté Prestige Internationale (BPI),
the fragrance targets a younger consumer than previous creations,
and plays on the theme of the modern-day garçonne, or the rock-
inspired tomboy—in line with Gaultier’s love affair with androgyny.
The name is also a play on words: “Ma Dame” literally means “my
lady”—quite a different take to the older married woman the formal
title usually refers to.
“We felt the need to enrich our portfolio with a new women’s
fragrance for [the brand], and Jean-Paul Gaultier, who is very
present in the creative process, wanted something that would
complement ‘Classique’, but also go in a different direction,” BPI
chief operating officer Eric Henry tells CosmeticNews.
“Most Gaultier fragrances are floral-oriental, and Madame is a bit
different as a floral-fresh. We’ve already gotten some very good
feedback on the new fragrance, both in what we like to
call ‘Gaultier land’ [Europe, and particularly France and Italy] and
in regions where we would like to develop further,” he adds. BPI
hopes the new women’s fragrance will help the Gaultier brand gain
greater notoriety and market share in markets like the US, Asia and
South America. “We’d like to see our market share in women’s
fragrance approach what it is in France for these markets,” he
explains.
The fresh, floral fragrance, created by Francis Kurkdjian from
Takasago (who conceived the bestselling Le Mâle men’s fragrance for
the brand), sports notes of rose, grenadine, musk and cedar. It
comes in a block-like, pink-tinted glass bottle featuring a sculpted
bust—the Gaultier trademark— and a black necklace. The outer
packaging, which shows the Ma Dame name in bold pink and black, also
has a pull-off card strip revealing the bottle inside.
The fragrance will launch exclusively on August 16 in three major
cities: in Paris, France at department store Galeries Lafayette and
perfumery chain Sephora’s flagship store on the Champs-Elysées; in
London, UK at Harrods; and in Hong Kong at Lane Crawford, followed
by a global rollout in September. The fragrance will be backed by a
TV campaign and a series of print ads, shot by Jean-Baptiste Mondino
and featuring model Agyness Deyn and Gaultier himself. BPI is also
deploying a widespread, “very energetic” in-store campaign in around
75% of the brand’s points of sale, according to Henry.
The Ma Dame line comprises three EdTs (30ml limited edition priced
€38, 50ml at €62 and 100ml at €86), as well as a bath line."
