The Last Written Words of Luther:
Holy Ponderings of the Reverend Father Doctor Martin Luther
            16 February 1546

            _Dr. Martin Luthers Werke_,
            (Weimar: Hermann Boehlaus Nachfolger, 1909),
            Band 85 (TR 5), pp. 317-318.

            Translated by James A. Kellerman

            1. No one can understand Vergil's Bucolics unless he has been a
shepherd for five years. No one can understand Vergil's Georgics,
unless he has been a farmer for five years.

            2. No one can understand Cicero's Letters (or so I teach), unless
he has busied himself in the affairs of some prominent state for
            twenty years.

            3. Know that no one can have indulged in the Holy Writers
sufficiently, unless he has governed churches for a hundred years
with the prophets, such as Elijah and Elisha, John the Baptist,
            Christ and the apostles.

Do not assail this divine Aeneid; nay, rather prostrate revere the
            ground that it treads.

We are beggars: this is true.

            Notes:

            1. This is a translation of WA, TR 5:168 (no. 5468) of a scrap of
paper that Johannes Aurifaber (a.k.a. Johann Goldschmied) found when
Luther died. Aurifaber wrote: "Luther ... wrote these words in Latin
on a slip of paper and put them on his table. I, Johannes Aurifaber,
wrote them down and Dr. Justus Jonas, Superintendent of Halle, who was
at Halle at the same time, took the slip of paper with him."
Unfortunately, this slip of paper has long since disappeared.

            2. I have followed the account of the document as told by Aurifaber.
There are, however, divergent accounts of what was on that scrap of
paper. Since the original slip of paper has been lost, it is impossible
toascertain what Luther actually wrote. For other accounts, see
WA 48:241 and TR 5:317 (no.5677). Although the wording differs slightly,
            the sentiment is the same.

            3. The line in praise of Vergil's A enid is composed of nine feet of
dactylic hexameter, the meter in which the Aeneid is written. It is most
likely an adaptation or misquotation of two lines near the end of Statius'
The Aeneid (12:816f), a poem also written in dactylic hexameter and
            profoundly influenced by Vergil's epic:

            Nee tu divinam Aendeida tempta,
Sed Ionge sequere et vestigia semper adora.

            Luther wrote:

Hanc tu ne divinam Aeneida tenta,
            Sed vestigia pronus adora.

            4. "We are beggars" is written in German; the rest of the document, in
            Latin.

      Darkzen.com
      The Zennist
      Zen/Ch'an FAQ
      Dark Zen FAQ
      Basis of Dark Zen
      Dark Zen Meditation
      Dark Zen Teachings

      The Basis of Dark Zen
Question: What is the basis for your teaching?

Dark Zen: Our basis, if you wish to call it that, is Mind’s luminous
originative power which can also be characterized as an intelligible light.
Its other name is Buddha who is a “light-maker.”

Question: I’ve read that the mind is luminous. But I am afraid that I have
never heard that the Buddha is a “light-maker”. Is this mentioned in the
      Buddhist canon?

Dark Zen: Yes. In the earliest scriptures, for example, the Buddha is
sometimes described as “the bringer of light”. In one account, he was
described as a “newly arisen sun” who has a “corona around him.” It is also
said that the Buddha could "make the world bright." Now, if you strip away all
the poetic imagery, what is left? I can only see an originative power which is
      prior to all things.

Question: Permit me to back up. I think I understand what you're saying. But
what I had originally in mind to ask you is what is the historical basis of
      your teaching?

Dark Zen: From the corpus of old manuscripts discovered at Tun-huang around
the turn of the last century, it is clear that Zen transmitted the 'dark
principle.' The term is used a number of times in these old documents. In one
of the oldest transmission documents found at Tun-huang it mentions the dark
principle. In fact, the title of the document is as follows: Former Worthies
Gather at the Mount Shuang-feng and Each Talks of the Dark Principle . I
should also point out that in this same document there is no indication that
there is a transmission going back to the Buddha. Nor, is there a
master/disciple succession. But what is clear is that each Zen master is such
in virtue of his insight into the dark principle.

Question: But what about the fact of a Zen lineage going all the way back to
the Buddha as found in the book, The Transmission of the Lamp?

Dark Zen: It is, I think, a tall tale. It's a non-scriptural creation by Sung
Dynasty Zennists who took selections from older works and made a singular work
befitting of their theory. But it all falls apart when we compare it with the
Mahayana Sutra entitled The End of Transmitting the Dharma Basket upon which
The Transmission of the Lamp is largely based. The Sutra provides us with a
list of 23 Indian ancestors, beginning with Mahakashyapa and ending with Simha
Bhiksu. There is no mention of Bodhidharma or his master, Prajnatara. In fact,
the Sutra is about transmitting the canon (Dharma)--it’s not about Zen. It is
also noteworthy that in the Avatamsaka Sutra (the Gandavyuha chapter) it is
mentioned that great disciples such as Mahakashyapa “were not capable of
perpetuating the lineage of Buddhas.” Obviously, something is wrong. This
passage doesn't square with the later Zen theory that Mahakashyapa was
transmitted by the Buddha. Why then would the Buddha transmit to Mahakashyapa
if he were incapable of perpetuating the lineage of Buddhas? As I read between
the lines, Mahakashyapa is only worthy, like Ananda, to transmit the canon.
Nothing more. He was incapable of transmitting the Buddha lineage which is the
      dark principle.

Question: Can you describe this so-called 'dark principle' of which you speak?

Dark Zen: It's an intractable subject, I must say. If I describe it by saying
that all constructed things flow from this dark principle while it, itself,
remains unconstruced and unmoved, what can such words really explain? At this
stage it is a far off goal, like some great mountain seen in the distance.
You, as a person, must still make the journey on your own.

Question: Isn't this just the problem of our need to think too much?

Dark Zen: Yes, of course, over-thinking can be a problem. On the other hand,
some Zennists teach that we should repress our thoughts and be like a dead
tree. This is wrong. But I happen to think that right thoughts are useful,
especially those which give us right information. Information can help guide
us in the right direction. Sometimes it leads us in the wrong direction.
Often, it is true, we have to reconsider our former thoughts and question this
information. We may find that they weren't much after all.

Question: Yes, I tend to agree with you. But back to the dark principle. Could
you at least sketch it out?

Dark Zen: I will try although I am hesitant to say too much about it. I can't
promise you miracles! [laughing] First of all, each of us has access to this
dark principle. All of us can tap into it. This is a given. However, owing to
our habit of following appearances, we have lost the ability to communicate
with it even though it is coexistent with us. Now, in the case of the Buddha,
with regard to the dark principle, when he reached complete enlightenment he
entered into what might be called primordial light. But more than just mere
light, it is sheer productive power, or the same, sheer potentiality.
Naturally, it is free and independent of phenomena although without it,
phenomena would not be. With that I can't say much more.

Question: How does this apply to Bodhidharma’s teaching?

Dark Zen: When Bodhidharma spoke of the Two Entrances, one was called the
entrance by principle. This principle, of course, is the dark principle. To
realize it was by means of wall-contemplation (biguan). Wall-contemplation
means to turn to the real by rejecting phenomena, so as to abide in the
primordial light. In this light there is nothing further to cultivate. This
light, or I should say, this dark principle, is a sheer productiveness and is
equally self-knowing. In Zen we call this the Great Perfection of the Path
which was first mentioned in the work, the Records of the Lanka Masters.

Question: When the Buddha converged with this dark principle, as you allege,
could he influence the weather or change the economic conditions of his
      country? [laughing]

Dark Zen: We are talking about two different worlds. The Buddha's world is the
unconditioned world of potentiality before our senses cut it up and our brain
conceptualizes it. The one of which you speak with its weather conditions and
poverty is the highly conditioned human, samsaric world. Here sentient beings
choose to look at this mysterious, unconditioned world in a certain,
predetermined way, assembling it into a plurality of things and conditions.
Furthermore, they crave this particular exotic view which ironically ends with
their suffering. But if beings elect to transcend the human world, eventually
reaching a higher plane of being, then, in such another world, sure they can
      influence the weather! [laughing]

Question: Well, I'm not sure I understand you. I only see the human world. It
is the one I care about. But let me ask you this question: How do you
understand all this in your daily life? This is what really interests me.

Dark Zen: When we tap into this dark principle, what little we can at first,
it leads us to its fullness in time. As a result, one becomes blissful as this
light gradually de-conditions unwholesome states of being. Even if you are in
pain, for example, this light is at work aiding you to win your freedom. It is
like an angel who insures that part of you will join the Buddhas.

Question: That is interesting. I like what I hear you saying. So, this is not
some intellectual exercise after all. Something actually happens in one's
inner being that helps them in their ordinary lives.

Dark Zen: Oh, but of course! It is most extraordinary. Let me also say that
one senses at all times an illuminating energy present within them. In my
case, as I turn to it, I become mor

Kurds continue the struggle for an independent state
            Reporter: Tracy Bowden

KERRY O'BRIEN: Turkey's refusal to allow US troops to stage through its
territory may have delayed the opening of a second front, but with US airborne
forces now moving into northern Iraq, Kurdish fighters are keen to join the
            battle against Saddam Hussein.

There is also the danger of a war within a war as Turkey threatens to send
            troops into Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq.

Tracy Bowden explains why the 3 million or so mainly Muslim Kurds who live in
Iraq will fiercely resist any threat to their dream of independence.

And I should warn her report does contain some disturbing library images.

            This is immensely important.

We cannot afford to miss the opportunity, we cannot afford to underestimate
            the importance of this moment.

For thousands of years the Kurdish people have lived in the mountain region
spanning present day Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey, but the history of the
Kurds and their struggle for an independent state is a story of bloodshed and
            betrayal.

DR BARHAM SALIH, PRIME MINISTER, PATRIOTIC UNION OF KURDISTAN: Kurds are
victims of history ... we have been given a lousy hand by history, by
politics, and the politics of major powers including the United States.

The Iraqi Kurds' battle to be free of Saddam Hussein has seen them endure
            terrible hardship.

15 years ago, a cruel chemical attack from the Iraqi regime.

HAYAL SYAN, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): We have bad memories of
            Saddam Hussein.

For example, in 1988, 8,000 people in Harabji were killed by a chemical bomb
            and 182,000 people disappeared.

There's another way for the bloodshed to stop ... and that is for the Iraqi
military and the Iraqi people to take matters into their own hands.

After the last Gulf War, the US encouraged but failed to support a Kurdish
            uprising against Saddam Hussein.

Tens of thousands of Kurdish men were rounded up and executed.

Kurdish refugees flooded into Turkey and Iran.

PAUL WHITE, CENTRE FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES: The Kurds, rightly or
wrongly, have a lot of faith in America.

They never seem to lose faith that America ... this time ... will come through.

Simko Halmet has been monitoring the war from his Sydney home.

Speaking daily with friends and family in northern Iraq, he says they are
            afraid but welcome the Americans.

SIMKO HALMET, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): We have suffered war
nearly a half century from this kind of dictatorship and this kind of regime
and the Kurdish people, they always hoped for a good future.

Since 1991, the region in the north of Iraq, known as Iraqi Kurdistan, has
been protected by a no-fly zone.

It's the closest thing the Kurds have to a homeland, governed jointly by the
Kurdistan Democratic Party, or the KDP, and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan,
            the PUK.

SIMKO HALMET, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): I believe since the
withdrawal of the Iraqis from the area, the Kurdish people in north of Iraq
have experienced for the first time the pure democratic feeling towards
the ... their living system in the area, which they proved to the world that
the Kurds can manage themselves, for the Kurds can leave in peace.

Not quite according to Dr Paul White, from the Centre for Peace and Conflict
            Studies in Sydney.

PAUL WHITE, CENTRE FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES: Certainly the sad history
of the Kurdish no-fly zone since 1991 doesn't give us a lot of faith that the
Kurdish nationalist parties of Iraq have the answer.

As I said, they've spent most of the time since 1991, unfortunately, fighting
            with each other.

Now as military action is stepped up in the north and Kurdish soldiers stand
ready to fight alongside the coalition, there are fears of a war within a war.

Turkey is threatens to send troops into northern Iraq ... ostensibly to
prevent the massive flood of refugees it saw 12 years ago.

HAYAL SYAN, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): They will not be even
welcomed by Kurdish people in the area and Kurdish people are ready to defend
the Iraqi Kurdistan, even if they've got only knife to against

What Saddam Learned from Serbia, Stalin and the SS
      by James Dunnigan
      March 29, 2003
Saddam Hussein has always been a quick learner, and willing to change rapidly
to survive. He seeks out nations in similar situations (ruthless dictatorships
at war) and compares notes. He also looks at other brutal dictatorships of the
20th century and adopts techniques that worked for them. There are many
      examples.

Serbia, whose former president is now on trial for war crimes, was engaged in
ethnic cleansing and war with its neighbors through most of the 1990s. The
Serbs became quite cozy with Iraq during that period. Saddam picked lots of
useful information on dealing with American air power and manipulating the
media. Serbia used masterful deceptions to save its tanks and artillery from
U.S. smart bombs. The Serbs also modified their anti-aircraft defenses to down
the first F-117 stealth aircraft destroyed in combat. Saddam has not had much
success copying these Serbian success. But Saddam has, apparently pulled off
another favorite Balkan trick. This is the "kill your own civilians to gain
media sympathy" routine. In the early 1990s, during the Serbian siege of the
Bosnian city of Sarajevo, mortar shells would sometimes fall into crowded
market places, killing and injuring dozens. The Serbs, who were guilty of many
atrocities, were blamed. But then some UN peacekeepers, while investigating
the attacks, noted that the location where the shells landed indicated that
they could only have been fired from Bosnian controlled territory. The Serbs
were also known to use this trick, but as with much else in the Balkans, no
      one will admit anything.

But now you have "American missiles" mysteriously going off in Baghdad market
places. Foreign reports brought to visit the sight of the "American atrocity"
have noted that the craters are shallow, unlike the deep craters U.S. bombs
and missiles leave behind. There are also no fresh bomb or missile fragments
to examine. One is left with the impression that these were car bombs, not
smart bombs. The U.S. has also pointed out that most of the civilian
casualties in Baghdad so far have been from Iraqi anti-aircraft shells and
missiles falling back to earth. Iraq uses a lot of old, large, Russian anti-
aircraft missiles. The SA-2, for example, weighs 2.5 tons at launch and
carries 286 pound warhead. The SA-3 has a 132 pound warhead, and the SA-6 a
130 pound warhead. These missile warheads are supposed to go off in the air if
a target is not found, but this doesn't always work. In that case, the missile
falls to earth, where it's warhead usually goes off on impact. But the
pinpoint accuracy with which "American missiles" hit "crowded Baghdad markets"
in rapid succession is a little too coincidental, and has all the marks of a
Balkans bombing scam. Anything to get a photo op of "American atrocities" to
      inflame Iraqis and overseas allies.

Russian dictator Joseph Stalin is another role model for Saddam Hussein.
Stalin set up a police state that even the Nazis admired for its brutal and
ruthless efficiency. Saddam particularly liked the Stalinist techniques of
establishing informers in every neighborhood or apartment house. This, coupled
with savage punishments for real or suspected traitors and their families,
created a fear among the population that made rebellion difficult. More
importantly, it created a group of thugs, torturers and secret policemen who
were hated by the population. This hate was good for Saddam, for it insured
the loyalty of these henchmen. If the Iraqi people got a shot at their
oppressors, they would quickly kill them. In the early days of World War II,
Stalin used his "organs" (as the Russians called the secret police and
security forces) to restore order among the armed forces and population
panicked by the rapid advance of the German blitzkrieg through western Russia.
Some pundits point out that Saddam sees himself in the same position as
Stalin, and is depending on his "organs" to use guns and threats to mobilize
the troops and people to defend the country. What is forgotten is that in
1941, the Germans were initially greeted as liberators by the majority of
Russian civilians. But the Germans were not there to liberate Russians, but to
conquer Russia so they could enslave the population and steal their land. The
Russian people soon turned against the Germans. But 24 years earlier, when the
Germans conquered much of western Russia during World War I, the Russians
under German control were allowed to govern themselves. There was no
resistance to the Germans then (but there an invasion from Russia after the
Germans left). So Saddam feels that if he can demonize the invaders
sufficiently in the media, and keep his secret police and security forces
forcing Iraqis to fight long enough, he can defeat the invaders.

Saddam also learned from the World War II Nazi Germans, even though the
Germans lost World War II. The Sunni Arabs of Iraq admired the Nazis from the
beginning, in the 1930s. Much of the Nazi "National Socialist" philosophy was
adopted by the Iraqi Baath party. Especially government control of most of the
economy and hatred of Jews, and anyone who "is not like us." But Saddam was
especially attracted to one uniquely Nazi institution; the Schutzstaffel
("SS"). The Nazis developed special police, security and military units
composed of party members, and called it the SS. The majority of those in the
SS were in the Waffen SS ("armed SS"), well trained, armed and motivated
combat units. Saddam has done the same thing with his Republican Guard. But
here he has gone the Nazis one better. While the Waffen SS never comprised
more than seven percent of the German armed forces, the Republican Guard makes
up over twenty percent of the Iraqi armed forces. Like the Waffen SS, the
Republican Guard can be expected to stand and fight to the death. While the
Republican Guard are much less capable soldiers than the Waffen SS, they are
just as reliable. And Saddam no doubt takes some comfort from the fact that
the Nazis formed three SS divisions from pro-German Moslems in the Balkans
      during World War II.

As the old saying goes, you can learn a lot about a person by finding out who
      their heroes are.

          }this is holy galaxy !!!

Explanation: Blossoming in nearby galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC),
this gorgeous nebula is energized by radiation and winds from a massive star
whose surface temperature approaches 100,000 degrees. The composite color
image from the European Southern Observatory's Melipal telescope resolves
details in the energetic nebula, with emission from helium atoms in blue hues,
oxygen atoms in green, and hydrogen atoms in red. While emission nebulae
generally show the familiar red light from ionized hydrogen atoms - hydrogen
atoms with their electrons stripped away - ionized helium atoms are tracers of
even higher energy interactions. The intriguing filaments of helium emission
make this and other recently studied emission nebulae most exceptional. A Wolf-
Rayet star, the massive star powering this nebula, created a cosmic bubble
with stellar winds in the early stages of its life. Part of the bubble is
still apparent as the large arc in the lower portion of the image. The area
pictured is about 150 light-years across.

              PRZYGODA PIĄTA
Wonny, słoneczny poranek jaśniał w czystych niebiosach, gdym konno mknął po
ulicach Bagdadu, zdążając pośpiesznie do mego pałacu.

              - Wariat, wariat! - krzyczeli jedni.

              - Szaleniec, szaleniec! - wołali drudzy.

              - Obłąkaniec, obłąkaniec! - wrzeszczeli inni.

              - Niespełna rozumu, niespełna rozumu! - mruczeli dość głośno ci, którzy stali
              w moim pobliżu.

Zestawiając te okrzyki i wywrzaski bez zbytniego trudu doszedłem do wniosku,

              chwili.

              - A gdzież jest miejsce wypadku?

              - Tam - na środku placu, gdzie ścisk i tłok największy. Tam właśnie tkwi ów
dziwny jegomość, którego nikt nie może zrozumieć. Bądź jednak cierpliwy, a

- wrzasnął mi wreszcie do ucha.

              - Kto ucieka i przed kim?

Rozumiesz? Uciekają! Bądź zresztą cierpliwy, a dowiesz
              się wkrótce innych,. ciekawszych szczegółów.

              - Jakaś nowa, a widocznie nie cierpiąca zwłoki wiadomość szła właśnie z ust do
              ust.

              - Mniejsza o to, kto i przed kim! - zawołał sąsiad. - Dosyć że wciąż jeszcze!

W tej chwili do uszu mego sąsiada doszła wiadomość następna.

              - Jest ich tysiąc! - wrzasnął gwałtownie, udzielając mi nowej wiadomości. - Ni

Rozumiesz?

Słowa te wzbudziły we mnie pewne uzasadnione obawy.

do przedstawicieli szarego końca, i ponieważ wzmożony krzyk i zgiełk tłumu

Spiąłem konia ostrogami i piersią końską torując sobie drogę dotarłem do
środka placu. Nie omyliły mnie przeczucia! Na samym środku placu z czupryną
rozwianą w cztery strony świata, z twarzą boleściwie pokurczoną i miejscami
pobladłą, z dłońmi na kształt dwojga rozszalałych pomioteł, wzniesionymi ku
najdalszym przestworom niebieskim stał, a raczej tkwił, a raczej sterczał
robiły wrażenie bramy zajezdnej, a czasem - przeciwnie - wrażenie jakiejś
zgoła samotnej, zbytecznej i niewiarogodnych rozmiarów litery O, jak gdyby ta
litera była główną, a nawet jedyną literą alfabetu! Z wnętrza owej litery, a
straszliwą a wymagającą niezwykłego pośpiechu wiadomością. Zauważyłem na
domiar, iż czerwonoskóry nos wuja Tarabuka podrygiwał konwulsyjnie, jakby
przerażony wyrazem reszty oblicza, z którym go tak ściśle łączyły węzły

dziewcząt i poznałem w nich natychmiast- powiernice natchnień mego wuja. Obok
każdej dziewczyny stał młodzieniec i rumak. W chwili gdym to zobaczył,
młodzieńcy dosiedli właśnie rumaków i porwawszy wpół każdy swoją dziewczynę

Chwytajcie! - zawołał z rozpaczą nieludzką. - To utwory moje!
              Moje utwory!

              - Wariat! Wariat! - zawołano znowu w tłumie. - Szaleniec! Obłąkaniec! O jakich
              on utworach gada?

              - Utwory moje, utwory! - wrzeszczał wuj Tarabuk. - Było ich tysiąc i wszystkie
uciekły! Uciekły i uniosły ze sobą wszystek skarb mego ducha! Znalazły sobie
jakichś młokosów, urwipołciów, wisusów spod ciemnej gwiazdy i uciekły z nimi

Wuj Tarabuk znieruchomiał, zesztywniał, stracił chwilowo czucie, rozum i wolę.
Ująłem go pod ramię i skierowałem jego kroki ku pałacowi. Szedł posłusznie i
bezwiednie, chociaż z widocznym trudem. Tłum gapiów towarzyszył nam aż do
              samego domu.

Gdym wszedł z wujem do pokoju, szepnął głosem doszczętnie złamanym:

              - Ktokolwiek jesteś, zły duch czy przyjaciel, posadź mię w fotelu, gdyż jestem
bezwzględnie zmęczony, a nie mam siły woli, której nakaz potrafiłby
              doprowadzić mię do postawy siedzącej.

Usadowiłem wuja w fotelu i stanąłem tuż obok.

              - Wuju - rzekłem - opamiętaj się i uspokój. Czy nie poznajesz mnie? To ja,

Imagine if you will, an ordinary man, a gray. Let's call him Arthur Dent just
to be silly... One day he wakes up wherever he lives in the world, and
feels 'different'. He is thinking, thinking in ways he hasn't since he was a
teenager and used to do radical things like grow his hair beyond the tops of
the ears strictly enforced by his high school in '64 or smoke a real cigarette
behind the corner shop. There is a vague feeling of meaning..but he hasn't
                  worked out about what yet.

As he sips his morning coffee, he begins to contemplate the nature of work and
recreation in connection with his job. Is he doing anything worthwhile? Is he
happy with his life? Is it all slipping away as he follows his daily routine?
Suddenly he has an urdge to use his hard earned resources to do something FUN
                  for a change.

This odd mood carries through with him during the day and just after
tea/coffee break, he starts thinking about both the neighbor he has been
wanting to punch and the way he used to feel about his wife when they first
got married. Odd combination of thoughts..Somehow he begins to see his
neighbor as a real person that needs either understanding or exterminating
(but he hasn't gone off the wall enough to break the law either way) and
decides that he really does still love his wife and they should do something
FUN together soon, like he was thinking this morning. He also decides what
will be an effective way to deal with the neighbor and resolves to cut down
the lelandi during the night when no one will see him, or be able to prove
anything. Why the hell not after all?

By lunchtime these combined influences have him making plans for changes he
could make in his life if he had the courage, and something begins to stir in
him. Just after the afternoon break, he has some sudden insights into the
nature of the cycle of life and the sacrifices he has made to get his current
position. He is also suddenly horny as hell. These distractions lead to
thoughts of creative endeavors he had wanted to do someday when he was young
and idealistic. The seeds of a real mid-life crisis are born.

With these thoughts swirling in his awakening mind, he goes home and presents
some ideas to his family who immediately wonder what's got into him, but hey,
they've been thinking weird things today too. Their reactions lead to Arthur
examining his own importance and seeing what he is to them, as well as
connecting to them in a way that he never did before. Suddenly he understands
(psychic) his own closest loved ones in a way that he never did before, and is
able to communicate and discuss some really outrageous ideas for things to do
to make their lives more interesting.

By bedtime, it is beginning again. The wave has travelled to the other side of
the globe and the work/play node is being reactivated. It will effect Arthur's
dreams and the solidity of the day's new insights and plans for changes.
Starting with setting the alarm for 2am to go cut down that lelandi...

The effectiveness of the colour nodes, depends on the balancing wave of multi-
coloured rays to maintain balance. Dissent breeds cooperation and completion.

"As in the real of the stars it is sometimes two suns which determine the
course of a planet, as in certain cases the suns of differing colour shine on
a single planet now with a red light, now with a green light, and sometimes
striking it at the same time and flooding it with many colours: so we modern
men are, thanks to the complicated mechanism of our 'starry firmament',
determined by differing moralities; our actions shine alternately in differing
colours, they are seldom unequivocal - and three are cases enough in which we

                          thinking and realized by non-opposition.

As it is actualized by non-thinking, this actualization is unconsciously and
                          naturally intimate.

As it is realized by non-opposition, this accomplishment is an unconscious and
                          natural certification.

As it is unconsciously and naturally intimate, this actualization never

                          never straight nor oblique.

As this intimacy never becomes impure, this intimacy is datsu raku (failing
                          off), never relying on anything.

As this certification is neither straight nor oblique, this certification is
striving (that is, the practice of zazen) without purpose.

So, this first level of human consciousness we might term "waking"
consciousness, has brain cell electrical discharges that pulse in rhythmic,
sweeping waves of activity across the brain's surface between 13 and 30 Hz (or
times per second). It's a brain dance of electricity that sweeps across the
brain in rhythmic waves. We call these rhythmic electrical waves of the
                            brain: "brainwaves".

Scientists, who have explored this interesting dance of the electrical waves
that sweep across the brain, have noticed that different states of
consciousness always have a corresponding, associated dance of electrical
waves sweeping across the brain. They eventually cataloged these pulses of
electrical activity into four general categories: Beta, Alpha, Theta and
                            Delta.

Scientists love to name things with Greek letters and the like - it sounds
more, well, scientific. It just wouldn't sound right if you named them
logically in English - like A, B, C and D. They couldn't even get that
straight in Greek - B, A, T and D for Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. As we will
see later, other researchers have seen other types of brainwave activity (I'm
one of those researchers!) which shows activity slower than the slowest
brainwaves recognized (that was my work) and faster than the fastest
brainwaves recognized and named them also after Greek letters (I'm afraid I'm
                            guilty here as well).

So, this more rapid 13-30 Hz pulsing of the brainwaves associated with
externally directed, linear thinking of the ordinary "waking state" falls into
the "Beta" category of brainwaves associated with 13-30 Hz.

Joseph - 11th-born overall. Definitely his father's favorite son, from his
favorite wife, it was Joseph who was sold for slavery into Egypt by his
jealous brothers (see Coat Of Many Colors). There, with God's help, he rose to
become the highest official of the Pharaoh, saving the nation from the famine
that was prophesied. When the rest of Jacob's family moved to Egypt to escape
the famine, it was Joseph who had made their survival possible (they would
remain in Egypt 400 years, eventually becoming slaves until the Exodus). While
there, Joseph had 2 sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were themselves made into

                                  Humor Improves Health
The adage that laughter is the best medicine is now being backed up by
scientific evidence. A new study conducted by the University of California at
Irvine is the first to show that merely the anticipation of a positive event
or outcome, such as watching a humorous video, can elevate people's moods and
                                  potentially boost immune system functions.

Previous studies led by Lee Berk, MD, PhD, demonstrated that laughter can fend
off many of the physiological effects of distress. When humans are stressed,
their bodies release large quantities of the hormones cortisol and
epinephrine, better known as adrenaline. The secretion of these hormones sets
off a cascade of responses including increased blood pressure, heart rate,
blood sugar and energy available to the brain and muscles. Although this
stress response works wonderfully in flight-or-fight situations, chronic
stress can suppress immune system functions including anti-viral and anti-
                                  tumor defenses.

                                  Lee Berk, MD, PhD
Mirthful laughter can ameliorate the damaging effects of the stress hormones,
because laughter enhances the secretion of growth hormone, an enhancer of
these same key immune responses. Berk explains, "The biological effects of a
single one-hour session of viewing a humorous video can last from 12 to 24
hours, while other studies of daily 30-minute exposure to such humor and
laughter videos produces profound and long-lasting changes in these measures."

In new work, Berk and his colleage David Felten, MD, PhD, show that the
expectation of watching a funny video can work wonders for the mood and
potentially the immune system as well. The mood states of 10 men were
evaluated using Profile of Mood States (POMS), which measures changes in
tension, depression, anger, vigor and fatigue. The POMS was administered two
days prior, 15 minutes prior and immediately following the viewing of a funny
video of the men's choice. Results showed that two days before viewing, levels
of depression decreased 51 percent, anger fell by 19 percent, confusion
diminished by 36 percent and fatigue by 15 percent.

The findings conclude that the anticipation of laughter, as much as the humor
event itself, can initiate positive mood changes prior to the actual
experience. Berk contends that the expectation of positive events is a synonym
for the "biology of hope," which can decrease the release of stress-related
hormones, boost immune response and potentially contribute to wellness and the
                                  therapeutic healing process.

The following article is from The Hindustan Times, 10th July.

American and Indian usage of English can foul up life for you
in the US, warns Amir Tuteja

                                    Call, don't ring!
                                    -----------------------
I have lived in the US a little over 30 years now, and am
thoroughly Americanised in the usage of English. I come across the
Indian version from frequent contact with the Indian embassywallas,
Indian students and visitors from India. There are so many differences
big and small, in the meaning and pronunciation, in the usage of the
same language - English - between Americans and Indians, that it can be
amusing and even embarrassing at times.
Many moons ago, the first time I went to McDonald I did not
know what was meant by the phrase "to go" ( which means to take the
food away and not eat there ). The girl at the counter asked me "to
go?" and I thought she was asking me to leave!
I was upset and retorted " I have come here to eat, why should
I go?" It took some explaining on both sides before I could place my
                                    order.
Americans are very verbose in saying things, which in themselves
are somewhat different from those in India. One almost always says "How
are you doing?" when you meet an acquaintance, and the accepted reply
is usually "Pretty good" and not just "Fine".
The reply to "Thank you" is "You are welcome" and not "Mention
not". But if you say thanks to someone like a sales girl, she is more
                                    likely to say "Uh-ha".
Unlike in India,"Excuse me" deserves an answer like "No problem".
When you are about to part, sometimes, you have to play games of
getting in the last word. Expressions like "see you later", "have fun",
"take care", "have a nice weekend","don't work too hard", come in handy.
I am also reminded about the use of the expression "Really". This
is used to mean "Oh, I see". For example, if somebody asks you where do
you work, and you answer "government", pat comes the exclamation "Really
!", which a first few times sounds like they do not believe you.
There are a lot of words and phrases which are used differently.
A funny example is that an "eraser" is never called a "rubber", because
the latter is slang here for a contraceptive!
An Indian friend at a restaurant, when asked, if she would like
anything more at the end of the meal, answered: "No, I will just take
the bill". You should have seen the look on the waiter's face - of
course, she should have asked for the check which she could have then
                                    paid with a bill(s).
Many American pronunciations are different from the British ones
used in India. For instance, one pronounces "schedule" as "skedjule".
Also "coupon" is pronounced as "q-pon". When the "i" is preceded by an
"m" or a "t", it is pronounced as "my" and "ty" - for example the words
"semi" and "anti". When it is preceded by a "d", unlike in India you do
not say it as "die", but as "dee", for example the word "divorce".
An elderly Indian couple have been living in this country for the
last 20 years or so. This incident occurred a few years ago. They were
in one of those huge parking lots at a department store. On returning to
their car after shopping they realised they had a dead battery on hand.
So they looked around and the lady spotted a man about to get into his
truck. She told her husband that she would ask that man if he could
help them. She approached him. The lady said, "Hi". The man replied
"Hi, may I help you." The lady said "Yes please, could you please give
                                    me a jump".
At this the man was rather shocked, and sort of taken aback. He
appeared to turn red, until he noticed the elderly gent in the car. Then
he laughed and remarked that "Oh you mean that your car needs a jump st-
art". The lady remarked "That's what I said".
Later in the car when the puzzled lady narrated this incident to
her husband, he almost drove off the road roaring with laughter. It was
only after he explained what "jump" meant, that the lady turned red. In
fact we discuss this incident almost every time we go to dinner at their
                                    place.
By the way, she has never been to that shopping complex ever
since this incident out of fear of bumping into that man!

Tailpiece : In the US you give someone a "call" not a "ring" on the
telephone. A newly arrived Indian went to the university library looking
for a job, and had a long discussion with the lady in charge. While
leaving he told her, "Well I'll give you a ring tommorrow."
The lady was so stunned that she didn't speak for a few minutes,
and then blurted out, "Isn't it a bit early for that?"

Mofaz: Israel to deliver list of demands to Syria through the US
          14-04-2003, 12:37

          www.albawaba.com/news/index.php3?sid=247008&lang=e&dir=news

Israel intends to deliver a list of demands to Syria through the United
States, including ousting Hizbullah fighters from southern Lebanon and
expelling Palestinian groups from Damascus, Israel's defense minister said in
          remarks published Monday.

Israel sees an opportunity to remove the potential Syrian threat from its
borders, Mofaz said in an interview, excerpts of which were published Monday
in the Tel Aviv-based Maariv daily.

"We have a long list of issues we are thinking of demanding of the Syrians,
and it would be best done through the Americans," Mofaz told the newspaper.

Mofaz added Israel wants Hizbullah weapons and rockets removed from southern
Lebanon and the group dismantled. Israel will demand an end to Iranian aid to
the resistance group, which reaches Hizbullah through Syrian ports, he added.

Israel will also demand that Syria stop harboring the Palestinian groups,
Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which Mofaz said have "command centers" in Damascus
from which they send orders and money to activists in the Palestinian
          territories.

                                                  A Brief History of Masturbation
Masturbation has been frowned upon throughout history and in nearly ever
culture. In ancient times of high infant mortality and low life expectancy,
stigmas about self-love were rooted in the belief that it endangered the
survival of the species. Men were also believed to have a finite amount of
sperm, and thus masturbation was thought of as wasteful. Of course, the 50,000
sperm men produce per minute are more than enough to go around!

Masturbation was also associated with many physical symptoms; psychiatrist
Benjamin Rush called it "self-pollution," claiming that it caused headaches,
epilepsy, nosebleeds, memory loss, heart murmurs, blindness, and even
psychosis. In the 1800s, Sylvester Graham led a health food crusade based on
the idea that sexual excess – including masturbation, erotic dreams and
intercourse more than once a month – was caused by rich and spicy foods. He
prescribed a bland and boring diet; the Graham cracker, in fact, is a
sweetened version of his invention. Corn Flakes were originally designed by
John Harvey Kellogg to promote health and decrease sex drive!

In the Victorian Era it was commonly held that, unlike any decent woman, men
had an excess of sexual desire and lust. Extramarital sex, homosexuality, oral
sex and masturbation were gravely taboo. This is not to say that this side of
human sexuality disappeared, of course; it was simply denied, discouraged and
condemned. Masturbation is still forbidden today in certain religions and
cultures, and even punished or prevented through castration and female
circumcision in some areas of the world. As late as 1940, a pediatric text in
the US proclaimed masturbation and any other non-reproductive erotic outlet as
harmful to the growth of society.

Today we live in a time of overpopulation, when sexuality is no longer tied
exclusively to reproduction. We now know that masturbation does not cause
disease; in fact, it is widely believed to promote health and well-being. Most
problems associated with self-love today are psychological; many people still
suffer needlessly from guilt, shame and feelings of isolation.

The 1948 Kinsey Report showed that intercourse, let alone masturbation, was an
activity as much to do with pleasure as it was to do with procreation. It
turned many ideologies on their ears and raised a great deal of controversy.
If the vast majority of the population had masturbated, then why should anyone
be ashamed of it? Though not completely "out of the closet" or accepted across
cultural barriers, it is increasingly accepted as a natural, healthy, and
fundamental part of human development and sexuality.

                V. Zionism and Holocaust Denial

Abu Mazen's doctoral dissertation, submitted to the Oriental College in Moscow
in 1982,(25) concerned Zionism, and was titled "The Connection Between Nazism
and Zionism 1933-1945." Abu Mazen later published a book with a slightly
different title: The Other Face: The Secret Connection Between the Nazis and
the Zionist Movement. In the book, Abu Mazen sought to de-legitimize the
Zionist movement, citing the 1935 agreement, between the Nazi authorities and
representatives of the Zionist movement, which facilitated the escape of part
of German Jewry to Palestine in exchange for their property. According to Abu
Mazen, this agreement proves that the entire Zionist movement collaborated
with the Nazis in the annihilation of the Jewish people because it saw
Palestine as the only appropriate destination for Jewish emigration.

In the foreword to the book, Abu Mazen discussed the question of the number of
Jewish Holocaust victims more extensively than in his dissertation, denying
commonly-accepted data. He wrote: "During World War II, 40 million people of
different nations of the world were killed. The German people sacrificed 10
million; the Soviet people 20 million; and the rest [of those killed] were
from Yugoslavia, Poland, and the other peoples. But after the war it was
announced that 6 million Jews were among the victims, and that the war of
annihilation had been aimed first of all against the Jews, and only then
against the rest of the peoples of Europe."

"The truth of the matter is that no one can verify this number, or completely
deny it. In other words, the number of Jewish victims might be 6 million and
might be much smaller – even less than 1 million. [Nevertheless], a discussion
regarding the number of Jews [killed] does not, in any way, diminish the
severity of the crime committed against them, as murder – even of one man – is
a crime that the civilized world cannot accept and humanity cannot accept."

"It seems that the Zionist movement's stake in inflating the number of
murdered in the war aimed at [ensuring] great gains. This led it to confirm
the number [6 million], to establish it in world opinion, and by doing so to
arouse more pangs of conscience and sympathy for Zionism in general. Many
scholars have debated the question of the 6 million figure, and reached
perplexing conclusions, according to which the Jewish victims total hundreds
of thousands. The well-known Canadian author Roger Delarom said on this
matter: 'To date, no proof whatsoever exists that the number of Jewish victims
in the Nazi concentration camps reached four million or six million. Zionism
first spoke of 12 million exterminated in these camps, but then the number
decreased greatly, to half, that is, only six million. Then the number
decreased further, and became four million, as the Germans could not have
killed or exterminated more Jews than there were in the world at that time. In
effect, the true number is much smaller than these fictitious millions.' The
[American] historian and author Raul Hilberg thinks that this number is no
greater than 896,000."(26) Abu Mazen's attribution of this figure to Raul
Hillberg's The Destruction of the European Jews is false.(27)

In the foreword to his book, Abu Mazen also argued that gas chambers were not
used as a means of annihilation – a claim based on research by Holocaust
denier Robert Faurisson. This part did not appear in Abu Mazen's dissertation
but was added to the book: "Afterwards, the Zionist movement attempted to
describe how they [the Jews] were murdered in concentration camps and gas
chambers, as it disregarded two fundamental facts. First, many of the Jews
remained alive; some were rescued by the Zionist movement [which encouraged]
their emigration to Palestine, and some [survived because of] the peoples of
the world that managed to protect them and take them away from the Nazis, as
the Soviet Union did by sending two million Jews to its eastern republics. In
addition, hundreds of thousands of live Jews were found in the concentration
camps when the Allies liberated the territories [ruled by the Nazis]."

"Second, the extermination of the victims was not carried out only in the
concentration camps and gas chambers. Some of the victims fell as a result of
their participation in wars and battles, and also due to starvation and
disease that struck all the peoples of Europe. In addition, the concentration
camps were not only for Jews, but held people from all over Europe, among them
fighters, intellectuals, scholars, prisoners of war, and opponents of
                fascism..."

"Regarding the gas chambers, which were supposedly designed for murdering
living Jews: A scientific study published by Professor Robert Faurisson of
France denies that the gas chambers were for murdering people, and claims that
they were only for incinerating bodies, out of concern for the spread of
disease and infection in the region."(28)

The largest major group of arthropods is a clade that includes insects,
millipedes, centipedes, and their relatives. This group, the Uniramia, was
formerly defined to include the Onychophora, which are now considered a
separate clade. It is restricted here to include only "true" arthropods with
          exoskeletons and jointed appendages.

Uniramians have strictly uniramous appendages; that is, their legs have only
one branch. Most are terrestrial, but some are aquatic for part or all of
their life cycles. They make up by far the most common and diverse major clade
of arthropods, and in fact make up over three-fourths of all known animal
          species on the planet

          Nonlinear systems and "chaotic" dynamics.

Our lab investigates the new field of nonlinear systems and "chaotic"
dynamics. We create analytical methods of description and time evolution of
complicated disordered phenomena. It is the main effort of this laboratory to
extend the scope of the problems over which these methods hold sway, to extend
the methods themselves developing appropriate mathematics and to improve the
methods for extracting such information from actual experimental studies
          ranging from fluids to brains.

well KJ is a true genius, a brilliant pianist and composer, worth to be placed
among other lights like Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and Chopin,
                                            Rubinstein, Aschkenazy, etc..

Too bad about his vocalizations! Such an interesting performer, though. I love
the way that he does both new work and old standards.

keith jarret has always been for me the essense of jazz. his music moves
beyond compesition to a statement of pure emotion. he is the only artist that
i still find new at every hearing even after twenty years. the kolin concert
is without doubt one of the most beutiful things i have every heard and has
been in many ways the sound track of my life. Just as an aside if you dont get
                                            the vocalisation dont listen.

makes me hard as a rock. Several years back I was sitting in a concert and
about half way through the set I couldn't hold back any longer. I just pulled

                                              Abstract
Call a program ``elegant'' if no smaller program has the same output. I.e., a
LISP S-expression is defined to be elegant if no smaller S-expression has the
same value. For any computational task there is at least one elegant program,
perhaps more. Nevertheless, we present a Berry paradox proof that it is
impossible to prove that any particular large program is elegant. The proof is
carried out using a version of LISP designed especially for this purpose. This
establishes an extremely concrete and fundamental limitation on the power of
                                              formal mathematical reasoning.
                                              Introduction
Good morning, everyone! I'd like to talk about an old subject and give it a
new twist. The subject I want to talk about is from the 1930's. It's Gödel and
Turing's incompleteness results in their two famous papers from 1931 and 1936.
I want to throw two new things into the stew. I'm going to use an approach
more like Turing's than like Gödel's. So algorithm is very important the way
I'll do it. But I'm going to throw in a new thing, which is program size¾I'm
going to look at the size of computer programs. And the other thing is that
I'm not going to use Turing machines or lambda calculus or recursive function
theory or fixed point theorems. I want to actually write out programs and run
them on computers using current techniques that are used in the industry. You
know, good software, 1996 vintage. So the idea is to look at some very old
ideas from the 1930's revisiting them using the best software technology that
we have available now, at this moment. So it's a mixture of extremely
philosophical stuff that probably no mathematicians are interested in, because
it deals with the limits of mathematics¾and on the other hand I want to make
it as practical as possible because I want to tell you about actually getting
your hands dirty programming this, and getting it to run efficiently and fast
on our current computers with current software.
To give you another hint of the difference in viewpoint, Gödel's approach to
incompleteness is ``This statement is false!'' And instead I use an approach
based on the Berry paradox, which is ``the first positive integer that you
can't name in a billion words''. Or even better, ``the first positive integer
that this statement is too small to name''. So there is no self-reference.
Actually there is, but it's a much weaker kind of self-reference than Gödel
needs to use. Also, I'll be using LISP as my programming language, versions of
LISP that I have to invent. And a nice thing about LISP is that I can invent a
LISP and program it on a new computer in a new programming language in about a
week. So it's easy, it's small enough, it's less than a thousand lines of code
to do a LISP. So I think that's a nice approach. So you won't see any fixed
point theorems, you won't see any recursive function theory or lambda
calculus¾I want to actually run programs efficiently.

And I won't need to have a statement say of itself that it's false. For a
statement to refer to itself you need to use some cleverness, right? I don't
need to use cleverness. I only need to have a statement know how big it is.
That's the only self-reference I need, in order for it to achieve something
that it's too small to achieve. For a statement to know its own size is easy.
To put a statement within itself is impossible, right? It doesn't fit! But
just to put the size of a program or statement within itself is easy, because
that's going to be about log N, it's going to be very small compared to the
object. So it's very easy to have an object know its own size and it takes
much more cleverness to have an object know itself completely. So this is a
rather different viewpoint, it's a much easier self-reference than Gödel's.

                                              Why I Love (Pure) LISP
But let me start telling you why I think LISP should be loved by
mathematicians. I think it's the only computer programming language that is
mathematically respectable, because it's the only one that I can prove
                                              theorems about!
                                              LISP
So why do I love LISP?! Well, the answer is, because it's really set theory,
and all mathematicians love set theory!
                                              Set Theory
LISP is just a set theory for computable mathematics rather than for abstract
mathematics. Of course in set theory the basic object would be a list, say, of
                                              three objects
                                              {A,B,C}
And as a joke one way to explain LISP is to say, well, take all the curly
braces and make them into parentheses and take the commas out and make them
                                              blanks!
                                              (A B C)
Syntactically that will show you what LISP is like. LISP objects are these
parenthesized expressions which can be nested to arbitrary depth.
                                              (A (B C) 123)
And objects are just separated by blanks. So this
                                              (A (B C) 123)
is a list with three elements, first A, second (B C), and third 123. The
second element (B C) is in turn a list with two elements. So these are just
sets of sets. The only difference between a list and a set is that there is a
first, a second, a third element, and elements can be repeated. But otherwise
this is just a computerized version of set theory. Just like in set theory
where you create everything out of sets¾in fact, if you're an extremist, you
create everything out of the empty set¾in LISP this
                                              (A (B C) 123)
is everything. This is your universal substance. This is the wood out of which
you build the world! And it's simultaneously data and programs, they are these
objects, which are called symbolic expressions (or S-expressions). And the
things you can put inside S-expressions are words or numbers.

                      Newton's First Law

Also called the "law of inertia," Newton's first law states that body at
rest remains at rest and a body in motion continues to move at a constant
velocity unless acted upon by an external force.

                      Newton's Second Law

A force F acting on a body gives it an acceleration a which is in the
direction of the force and has magnitude inversely proportional to the mass m
                      of the body: . scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/nimg168.gif

                      Newton's Third Law

Whenever a body exerts a force on another body, the latter exerts a
force of equal magnitude and opposite direction on the former. This is known
as the weak law of action and reaction.

"Der konservative Sinn der Universitäten kann auf die technische Wissenschaft
nicht übertragen werden", so der damalige Rektor der TH Charlottenburg, Alois
Riedler. Das Pathos, mit dem die eigene Position beschrieben wurde, ist heute
nicht mehr nachvollziehbar. "Es war, als spräche der Zeitgeist selbst", solche
und ähnliche zeitgenössische Kommentare begleiteten den Eintritt der
Technischen Hochschule in das 20. Jahrhundert.
