My Embarrassing Event
It was a beautiful starry night. The moon was full, and no clouds
spoiled this wonderful view. It was silent, really silent. It was one of
those nights when a man feels good. I mean, one of those nights when
everything is right and nothing is wrong.
It was a Sunday night. I will never forget that night. I got off the
train and was going home very slowly. All of a sudden I saw a woman. I came
up to her, and I don’t know why, I started laughing out loud. She wore gray
jeans and a black coat. I realized, she was very sad. I did something very
stupid by laughing, and I had no idea how I could apologize to her, so I sat
down next to her and began small talk.
She was twenty-five years old and deadly sick. She was a homeless
druggy. All of a sudden she looked at me with tearful eyes. ”Don’t you fear
me?” she asked me. She had a sweet voice. I observed her for a while, and
finally I asked her, ”What happened?” Then, she told me everything about her
life. Her name was Catherine. She has taken drugs for seven years, but she
looked good. She had black eyes and healthy skin. She came from a rich
family. Two yeas ago, she was infected by the AIDS virus. Then, her friends,
boyfriend, and even parents abandoned Catherine.
When she finished her story, I looked at her, and tears were running
down my cheeks. Then, she looked at me and asked, ”Why are you crying?” I
didn’t respond. Then she said, ”Don’t feel sorry for me. I’m just a worthless
druggy.” ”That’s not true” I answered. Then she said, ”Remember, don’t be
like me. Catch your life because it’s too short.” I looked at her again and I
asked, ”But why you? Why do you have to be sick?” She answered me, ”I have
gotten many chances, but I wasted all of them. I’m trash. I’m so ashamed of
myself.” I didn’t know, what I could say or do to make her feel better. Ten
minutes later, she stood up and said to me, ”I love death because that’s the
only thing that’s waiting for me now.” After she said it, she went away;
however, I have never forgotten her face.
