I found these unique films on youtube a couple of months ago and sent them to my
Jewish friends in Montreal. They were very grateful for this and appreciated
them even more because they don't come from Poland and it gave them an idea
about the life of Jewish communities in Poland before the WWII.

Indeed. I had a very similar situation when I showed these films to some sabras
(people born in Israel).

The film is very moving and makes you cry when you realise that almost entire
Jewish population in Poland (kids from the park as well) was slaughtered by
nazis...

It's very moving when you think about ANY of the stuff that te Nazis did to
other nations.


There are many films in the Polish Film archives, rotting away because there
are no funds to look after them and keep them in good conditions. Also, the
people that look after theses films, are a dying trade so to speak.
There aren't many places where in Poland, where you can learn how to look after
these types of negatives. The Filmoteka Narodowa is so underfunded, sometimes,
the people who work there, pay for materials themselves.
Some hope lies in the new film institute. However there are films about the
whole of pre war Warsaw, where you can see the beauty of this town, it's
architecture and life. It was a very diverse city and a very modern city too.

Hitler ordered to level the city. Before the WWII Warsaw was called "Paris of North"

"Regarding the destruction of Warsaw, Dariusz Tarkowski wrote the following:

It is estimated that during World War II, 85% of Warsaw's left bank buildings
were destroyed. 35% were destroyed in 1944 with dynamite, flamethrowers and
bombs, building by building, in retaliatory actions by the German military for
the failed Warsaw Uprising of 1944. When the uprising failed, all the civilian
population was deported and a planned and systematic operation of destruction
was carried out. Historical buildings, like the Royal Castle, were specifically
targeted during this operation. Further 25% of the buildings were destroyed in
the course of the fights during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 itself. A certain
number was destroyed during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 and only the rest
was destroyed during the war in September 1939 and the bombing campaign of that
time."
But Warsaw rose alive from the ashes. The pride of Poles.

If you have any info on or old photos of Chlodna 20 please let me know. I have
collected a lot of info on the history from books and from the coach loads of
tourists who visit the building but would be very interested in anything you
may have on this subject.

Do you speak Polish? If not then do not hesitate to visit the Jewish Historical
Institute (Żydowski Instytut Historyczny). It's located very close to the blue
skyscraper (Warsaw, pl. Bankowy).

Chłodna 20

Tu w getcie mieszkał Adam Czerniaków, prezes Judenratu, czyli utworzonej przez
Niemców rady żydowskiej. 23 lipca 1942 r. popełnił samobójstwo w proteście
przeciw deportacji Żydów do Treblinki. Warto zwrócić uwagę na budynek. Jest to
jedna z niewielu kamienic, jakie ocalały przy Chłodnej. Jej fasadę zdobił
zegar, a wieńczył wyniosły szczyt. Zegar dawno zniknął, a szczyt zwalono po
wojnie. Warto też wejść do bramy kamienicy. Jest niezwykła. Nie biegnie prosto,
lecz łagodnie skręca jak szosa omijająca górę. Warto dodać, że przed wojną
Chłodną, pełną sklepów i kin, nazywano niekiedy Wolską Marszałkowską. I na tej
ulicy tkwią w bruku szyny tramwajowe.

Chłodna

Piękny neorenesansowy kościół św. Karola Boromeusza powstał w latach 1841-49 na
wzór wczesnochrześcijańskich bazylik rzymskich. Projektantem był Henryk
Marconi, a fundatorką - księżniczka Klementyna z Sanguszków Małachowska.
Ceniono ją jako matronę wielkich zalet, choć jej reputacja była nadszarpnięta z
przyczyny wybujałego temperamentu. Podczas budowy wprowadzono nowy materiał,
jakim było lane żeliwo. Dziś wnętrze świątyni zdobi wysokiej klasy barokowy
obraz - św. Antoni pędzla Michaela Willmana. Jest on "łupem wojennym", pochodzi
z obrabowanego w 1945 r. opactwa cystersów w Lubiążu koło Wrocławia.

Chłodna 3

W głębi ulicy widnieją dwa pawilony straży pożarnej. To pozostałość po
barokowych koszarach mirowskich z lat 1730-32, w których stacjonowała gwardia
konna koronna. Od 1851 r. w pawilonach koszar mieści się straż pożarna (można
zwiedzić tu niewielkie muzeum - otw.: pon.-pt. 9-14, tel. [phone]).
Najsłynniejszym komendantem był w początku XX w. Józef Hłasko, w prostej linii
dziadek pisarza Marka Hłaski. W latach 1918-22 Hłasko dowodził też całą
warszawską strażą. - Bywałem tam jako dziecko. Mieszkanie komendanta znajdowało
się na piętrze budynku usytuowanego wzdłuż Chłodnej. Wejście wiodło od strony
kościoła Karola Boromeusza. Wchodziło się po starych schodach. Hłasko mieszkał
tam aż do swojej śmierci. Były tam m.in. stajnie i wozownie - opowiadał mi
Edward Schiele, spowinowacony z komendantem. Za czasów komendanta maskotką
strażaków były małpy, które zabierano na akcje. Miały uszyte specjalne spodnie,
by golizną nie obrażać poczucia moralności.

Thanks -I've been there already - although it would certainly be worth going
back. I have the spacerownik and several books with photos and info on the
building. I am looking for a picture of it from before the war - the only pics
I have are from after it was damaged and how it looks now. I can't seem to find
one anywhere!

Thanks I have this book. Maybe a photo of the front of the building pre-war
