Major PC vendors including Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and IBM, have all been
promoting Linux-based PCs in China. Legend Group, the largest provider of IT
products in China, has also joined the effort.

Legend is going to launch Linux-based PCs in April, according to sources.
Tsinghua Tongfang, another IT provider in china, indicated that domestic
adoption of Linux will rely heavily on foreign vendors leading the charge.

Dell declined to speculate on the extent of its offerings of Linux-based PCs
into the China market. The company has had Linux-based servers available from
its line-up since December 2003. Meanwhile, HP is starting to offer the
software on PCs and other products, possibly dropping Linux-based product
prices by as much as 20-30%.

IBM anticipates 40,000 of its employees worldwide will be using Linux-based
PCs by the end of 2005, according to Scott Handy, IBM’s director of worldwide
Linux solutions.

Tak w skrocie to jest tutaj mowa o promocji linuksa w Chinach. Dell, HP i IBM
promuja pc z linuksem w tym kraju korzystajac z pomocy najwiekszej chinskiej
        firmy z sektora IT.

Dodatkowo ostatnio
wyszla informacje, ze ibm zainwestowal 50mln$ w novella i zamierze oferowac SuSe
preinstalowane na sprzedawnych maszynach. dodatkowo novell by przebic linuksa na
biurka przechwala sie, ze pracuje nad narzedziami ktore zintegruja roznice w
        srodowiskach gnome2 i kde3 (pewnie chodzi o wspolne ustawienia fontow, skorek i
ustawien srodowiskowych, a nie o polaczenie 2ch projektow, nad ktorymi novell,
czy inna wielka firma nie ma na szczescie kontroli).

Notebook and case makers in Taiwan to ramp up modularized chassis
David Tzeng, Taipei; Steve Shen, DigiTimes.com [Friday 26 March 2004]

Taiwan’s makers of notebooks and magnesium alloy cases are stepping up their
efforts to develop modularized chassis for notebooks as a means to boost their
efficiency and operating margins, according to sources at the makers.

Under an emerging production mode, more notebook makers are contracting the
assembly of chassis, plastic components and stamping aluminum parts to case
makers. Previously, notebook makers bought chassis from the suppliers and then
integrated mechanical parts and components into the chassis by themselves.

Using the modularized chassis, first-tier notebook makers, who have been
specializing in mass-production for large quantity orders, will be able to
accept orders in small volumes and configure their products based on clients’
      different specifications before shipment.

The new production scheme will also enable notebook makers to reduce the number
of parts and components suppliers to 5-10 from as high as the 50-60 they have
to use currently, said the sources.

Asustek Computer and Wistron are expected to optimize such a production scheme
to better compete with the industry giants like Quanta Computer and Compal
      Electronics, the sources said.

Benefiting from the underlining trend for modularized chassis, some Taiwanese
case makers, including Catcher Technology, Everskill Technology and Chenming
Mold Industrial (also using Uneec as registered trade name), are expanding
their production capacity in China to grab the windfall.

Catcher plans to build a new plant in China for plastic injection and stamping
aluminum parts and to handle assembly of the modularized chassis, according to
      the sources.

Chenming is expanding its cooperation with Toshiba. Chenming’s plant in
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province (China), ships modularized chassis directly to
Toshiba’s notebook plant, also located in Hangzhou.

Everskill expects to start delivering modularized chassis to Taiwanese notebook
makers in the second half of this year, said sources at the company.

Linux is no longer the stuff of Bill Gates haters and Unix platform geeks
anymore. While the peace-and-love culture of the Linux open-source platform
movement remains, big-money OEMs adopting the platform and garnishing massive
investments are beginning to push Linux into the mainstream.

It is almost no longer a question of which applications run on Linux, but
instead, which applications do not run on Linux. We look at heavy-hitter PC
OEMs such as HP that have taken the Linux desktop leap during the past few
weeks and offer a survey of Linux applications. We even tell you why you don't
want Linux if you're a gamer.

Linux still appeals to those who either prefer not to help bankroll an illegal
monopoly's profits or who seek a more stable and secure operating system. For
the rest of us, Linux also offers costs savings afforded by its open-source
platform and it more than does the job as an operating system.

For the timid, Linux virtual operating systems also exist for those who do not
want to yet take the leap of faith and want to try out Linux without altering
their Windows OS platform. And for the non-believer, there is also ample
evidence of Linux' growing desktop penetration and application support.
However, all of this does not mean that Linux does not have its drawbacks,
      either.

      The Stats

As THG reported earlier this year from New York during LinuxWorld, big gun OEMs
and their suppliers are allotting R&D and marketing budgets for Linux
applications, including servers and portable applications, as well as for
desktops. The world's largest PC OEMs and suppliers, including Dell, HP, Intel,
AMD and IBM, not to mention peripheral suppliers, including printer, digital
camera or storage makers, increasingly offer plug-and-play support for Linux
      OS'.

But what does this mean for the desktop? This year, many large corporate OEMs
and software distributors have even exclaimed that 2004 will be the "year for
      Linux on the desktop."

However, while Linux continues to demonstrate its growing promise as a viable
desktop application, it will not tame the 800-pound OS gorilla anytime soon.
According to several analysts interviewed, Linux will not see application on
more than three per cent of all PCs by the end of this year. But that does not
mean, however, that Linux is not growing like gangbusters, either.

This year, for example, new Linux client operating environment licenses will
grow 25% per year from 3.4 million units to 10.4 million by 2007, according to
      analyst firm IDC.

For servers, already a mainstay for Linux, Linux platform sales will grow from
$3 billion in 2003 to nearly $8 billion by 2008, according to analyst firm IDC.
In units, Linux server sales will grow from fewer than one million units last
year to over two million units by 2007.

Masz jakieś niezdrowe przyzwyczajenia. Język angielski dobrze znać, tylko Ty go
znasz na tyle słabo, że nie potrafisz widocznie streścić artykułu :)
Nie jest w dobrym tonie kopiowanie cudzych tekstów.
Przyzwyczajaj sie do polskich terminów, bo jak stracisz pracę w angielskiej
            firmie...
