Bischof für Zentrum gegen Vertreibungen

LIMBURG. Im Gespräch mit der katholischen Nachrichtenagentur KNA äußerte sich
der Limburger Weihbischof Gerhard Pieschl positiv zum geplanten Standort des
Zentrums gegen Vertreibungen in Berlin. Er habe durchaus Verständnis für die
Kritik aus Polen und der Tschechischen Republik, so Pieschl. Dies
seien "typische Reaktionen von Leuten mit schlechtem Gewissen". Der
Versöhnung willen sei man der Wahrheit verpflichtet, führt der Weihbischof
weiter aus. Er lehne es ab, die Vertreibung der Deutschen "möglichst zu
relativieren und zu entschuldigen". Das Zentrum solle auch die Leistung der
Kirchen bei der Integration der Vertriebenen in den 1950er Jahren ausreichend
würdigen, forderte Pieschl. Er halte den Standort Berlin "selbstverständlich"
für den richtigen Ort. Er sehe nicht ein, weshalb die deutschen Vertriebenen
dort keine zentrale Gedenkstätte haben sollten.

German mobile killing units (Einsatzgruppen) operated in German-occupied
territories in eastern Europe during World War II. This rare footage shows a
mobile killing unit during a massacre in Liepaja, Latvia. The film was taken,
contrary to orders, by a German soldier. Before the war, the Jewish population
of Liepaja stood at more than 7,000 residents. German mobile killing squads
shot almost the entire Jewish population of the town. When the Soviet army
liberated the city in 1945, just 20 to 30 Jews remained.

POLISH VICTIMS

The German occupation of Poland was exceptionally brutal. The Nazis
considered Poles to be racially inferior. Following the military defeat of
Poland by Germany in September 1939, the Germans launched a campaign of terror.
German police units shot thousands of Polish civilians and required all Polish
males to perform forced labor. The Nazis sought to destroy Polish culture by
eliminating the Polish political, religious, and intellectual leadership. This
was done in part because of German contempt for Polish culture and in part to
prevent resistance against the occupation.

In May 1940, the German occupation authorities launched AB-Aktion, a plan to
eliminate the Polish intelligentsia and leadership class. The aim was to kill
Polish leaders with great speed, thus instilling fear in the general population
and discouraging resistance. The Germans shot thousands of teachers, priests,
and other intellectuals in mass killings in and around Warsaw, especially in
the city's Pawiak prison. The Nazis sent thousands more to the newly built
Auschwitz concentration camp, to Stutthof, and to other concentration camps in
Germany where non-Jewish Poles constituted the majority of inmates until March
1942.

The Nazis conducted indiscriminate retaliatory measures against populations in
areas where resistance was encountered. These policies included mass
expulsions. In November 1942, the Germans expelled over 100,000 people from the
Zamosc region; many were deported to the Auschwitz and Majdanek camps.
Approximately 50,000 Polish children were taken from their families,
transferred to the Reich, and subjected to "Germanization" policies.

Following the annexation of western Poland to Germany, Hitler ordered
the "Germanization" of Polish territory. Nazi governors (such as Arthur Greiser
in the Warthegau and Albert Forster in Danzig-West Prussia) expelled hundreds
of thousands of Poles from their homes in the Generalgouvernement. More than
500,000 ethnic Germans were then settled in these areas

A Polish government-in-exile, led by Wladyslaw Sikorski, was established in
London. It was represented on Polish soil by the underground "Delegatura,"
whose primary function was to coordinate the activities of the Polish Home Army
(Armia Krajowa). The Polish resistance staged a violent mass uprising against
the Germans in Warsaw in August 1944. The rebellion lasted two months but was
eventually crushed by the Germans. More than 200,000 Poles were killed in the
uprising.


Between 1939 and 1945, at least 1.5 million Polish citizens were deported to
German territory for forced labor. Hundreds of thousands were also imprisoned
in Nazi concentration camps.

It is estimated that the Germans killed at least 1.9 million non-Jewish Polish
civilians during World War II. In addition, the Germans murdered at least 3
million Jewish citizens of Poland.

HOLOCAUST
The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and
murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its
collaborators. "Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by
fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that
Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior,"
were "life unworthy of life." During the era of the Holocaust, the Nazis also
targeted other groups because of their perceived "racial inferiority": Roma
(Gypsies), the handicapped, and some of the Slavic peoples (Poles, Russians,
and others). Other groups were persecuted on political and behavioral grounds,
among them Communists, Socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals.

In 1933, the Jewish population of Europe stood at over nine million. Most
European Jews lived in countries that the Third Reich would occupy or influence
during World War II. By 1945, close to two out of every three European Jews had
been killed as part of the "Final Solution", the Nazi policy to murder the Jews
of Europe. Although Jews were the primary victims of Nazi racism, other victims
included tens of thousands of Roma (Gypsies). At least 200,000 mentally or
physically disabled people were murdered in the Euthanasia Program. As Nazi
tyranny spread across Europe, the Nazis persecuted and murdered millions of
other people. More than three million Soviet prisoners of war were murdered or
died of starvation, disease, neglect, or maltreatment. The Germans targeted the
non-Jewish Polish intelligentsia for killing, and deported millions of Polish
and Soviet citizens for forced labor in Germany or in occupied Poland. From the
earliest years of the Nazi regime, homosexuals and others deemed to be behaving
in a socially unacceptable way were persecuted. Thousands of political
dissidents (including Communists, Socialists, and trade unionists) and
religious dissidents (such as Jehovah's Witnesses) were also targeted. Many of
these individuals died as a result of incarceration and maltreatment.
Before beginning the war in 1939, the Nazis established concentration camps to
imprison Jews, Roma, other victims of ethnic and racial hatred, and political
opponents of Nazism. During the war years, the Nazis and their collaborators
created ghettos, transit camps, and forced-labor camps. Following the invasion
of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing units) carried
out mass-murder operations against Jews, Roma, and Soviet state and Communist
party officials. More than a million Jewish men, women, and children were
murdered by these units. Between 1942 and 1944, Nazi Germany deported millions
more Jews from the occupied territories to extermination camps, where they
murdered them in specially developed killing facilities.
In the final months of the war, SS guards forced camp inmates on death marches
in an attempt to prevent the Allied liberation of large numbers of prisoners.
As Allied forces moved across Europe in a series of offensives on Germany, they
began to encounter and liberate concentration camp prisoners, many of whom had
survived the death marches. World War II ended in Europe with the unconditional
surrender of German armed forces in the west on May 7 and in the east on May 9,
1945.
In the autumn of 1941, Heinrich Himmler entrusted SS General Odilo Globocnik
(SS and police leader for the Lublin District) with the implementation of a
plan to systematically murder the Jews of the Generalgouvernement. The code
name Aktion Reinhard was eventually given to the plan, after Heydrich (who had
been tasked with implementing the "Final Solution" and who was assassinated by
Czech partisans in May 1942). Three extermination camps were established in
Poland as part of Aktion Reinhard--Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka. Upon arrival
at the camps, Jews were sent directly to the gas chambers. Globocnik's
assistant, SS Major Hermann Hoefle, was in charge of organizing the
deportations to the Aktion Reinhard camps.


The Nazis also gassed Jews at other extermination camps in Poland: Auschwitz-
Birkenau (which was the largest camp), Majdanek, and Chelmno. At Majdanek,
groups of Jews deemed incapable of work were gassed. At Chelmno, Jews were
gassed in mobile gas vans. The Nazis systematically murdered over three million
Jews in the extermination camps.

In its entirety, the "Final Solution" called for the murder of the Jews of
Europe by gassing, shooting, and other means. Up to six million Jews lost their
lives--two-thirds of the Jews living in Europe in 1939.
