CAIRO, March 10 – Literary writers in many parts of the world have continued to
support the statement issued by the International Parliament of Writers (IPW)
which supported the Palestinian cause, an Egyptian newspaper reported Sunday.
The statement condemned Israeli atrocities and asked the United nations to
intervene to stop the ‘killing spree’ of Palestinians, Al Ahram daily newspaper
reported.
The statement, which was signed by Nobel laureates such as Nigerian writer,
Wole Soyinka, 1986 Nobel Laureate in Literature and Jose Saramago, 1998 Nobel
Laureate in Literature, was sent to hundreds of writers around the world so
they can sign their name in support.
The statement was also signed by Egyptian Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature,
1988, Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian literary source told IslamOnline.
The IPW was launched in 1993, after the assassination of Algerian writer Tahar
Djaout and an appeal was launched in July, 1993 from Strasbourg, at the
initiative of Carrefour des littératures.
The aim of the organization is to create a structure that could provide
tangible support for writers victimized by persecution. Within a few days of
the appeal, a petition was signed by 300 writers throughout the entire world.
This marked the birth of the IPW. The organization's website is
