Poprawna terminologia wobec Indian to "Native Americans". Sa jeszcze inni Amerykanie tacy jak np. "Hispanic Americans", "African Americans" itd. Poprawnosc w okreslaniu tych ludzi nie oznacza jednak, ze wielu bialych ma np. czarnych przyjaciol i vice versa. Ale o tym czy jestes Amerykaninem decyduja tam bardziej twoje maniery, grubosc potfela oraz za kogo sie sam uwazasz. Mozesz uwazac sie za Amerykanina i nikt ci tego nie zabroni ani cie za to nie napietnuje. Sprobuj byc czarnym i uwazac sie za Polaka albo Rosjanina (choc spiewali "dla nas niet ni czornych ni cwietnych"). Mozesz sie tam nawet nazywac "Ahuja" (prawdziwe nazwisko bodajze rodem z Hawajow) i tez ci nikt nie bedzie za to dokuczal (dobrze, ze wielu nie zna polskiego).

They also set the village, which included many children, on fire. Those who were lucky enough to escape the fire were systematically sought, hunted down and killed. While many, including historians, still debate what exactly happened this day, also known as the Pequot Massacre, it directly led to the creation of “Thanksgiving Day.” This is what the governor of Bay Colony had to say days after the massacre, “A day of thanksgiving. Thanking God that they had eliminated over 700 men, women and children.”

William B. Newell, a Penobscot Indian and former chairman of the Anthropology Department at the University of Connecticut stated, “Gathered in this place of meeting, they were attacked by mercenaries and English and Dutch. The Indians were ordered from the building and as they came forth were shot down, The rest were burned alive in the building. The very next day the governor declared a Thanksgiving Day. For the next 100 years, every Thanksgiving Day ordained by a Governor was in honor of the bloody victory, thanking God that the battle had been won.”

The controversies surrounding the origins of Thanksgiving were of course familiar to me but I didn´t touch it out of respect for the natural joy of our recently naturalised Americans.

But since the topic was brought up anyway it´s worth reviewing some sources and claryfying some facts. SInce it´s ENglish I enjoy every bit of it :)

Fact is that the majority? /Some Indians do not join the tradition and even more. They call it the Day of mourning.

Then as it happens quite so often in USA the current form of the feast is fictional.

The ALgonquian tribes of the East Coast used to celebrate the gifts of nature 5 times a year since times immemorial.

The first documented celebration with Whites was initiated by the Pilgrims but entirely provided by the Wampanoagas and their chief, Massasoit and 2 English speaking Indians Squanto and Samoset.

The took place end September, early October.
All the food was provided by the Indians: venison, fish, maybe some poultry. turkey possible but that´s not a corroborated fadt and of course plenty of corn – the ubigitous nourishment of both Americas.

The Indian squaws were sitting eating on the ground by their male warriors. The Pilgrim women were waiting standing behind. They were allowed to eat as early as the men frinished (sic!)
