        WHY WE FEW CRITICIZE ISRAEL

        by Joseph Sobran

WASHINGTON - People sometimes ask me why I'm so critical of Israel,
as if I should be devoting more of my attention to Sri Lanka, or perhaps
Zaire. But the question is always a little nervous, as it wouldn't be if I were
writing equally often about Sri Lanka or Zaire.

I could understand this curiosity if some other small, remote country were
one of the world's four or five military powers; if it received a quarter of our
foreign aid; if it were constantly on our front pages; and if its sympathizers
regularly occupied much of the op-ed space of The New York Times and
other major newspapers. But there is only one country of whom these things
are true, and that is Israel.

Nobody thinks it's odd that there should be 20 columnists who are
apologists for Israel; but apparently it is unfathomable that there should be
one or two who are critical of Israel.

But there's another reason that is both personal and professional. Israel
has a very powerful lobby in this country, with a highly accomplished
propaganda corps. And that lobby is not content with making the case for
Israel and putting fear into nearly all the politicians in Washington, who are
supposed to be representing the interests of the United States. It also tries to
shut up opposition in the free press.

I have felt its pressure. So have Rowland Evans and Robert Novak. So
has Patrick Buchanan. And a great many newspaper editors.

We still hear of the fear engendered by Joe McCarthy. But people talked
freely about that fear even 'at the height of Sen. McCarthy's career. I believe
that someday historians will look back with more wonder about the quieter
and more paralyzing fear engendered in our own era by domestic Zionist
power. The press was never afraid of Sen. McCarthy; it is very much afraid
        of Israel's U.S

            By Ari Shavit

We killed 170 people in Lebanon last month. Most were refugees. A good number were women, children and the
elderly. Nine civilians, including a 2-year-old and a 100-year-old man, were killed at Sachmor, a village. Eleven civilians,
including seven children, were killed at Nabatiyeh, a town. At the United Nations compound at Qana, a village, 102
were killed. We killed all these people not in a fit of inflamed passion, not because of messianic extremism or nationalist
            fervor.

We killed them under the umbrella of a peace campaign. Under the leadership of a peace Government and in the midst
of an election campaign that features peace. We killed them so that peace could be re-elected. We killed them because
our peace coalition needed to prove it is just as tough as the opposition.

              Palestine Times:

Opinion poll shows Arafat losing, Hamas winning
Occupied Jerusalem - An opinion poll released in the West Bank on 25 September
by the "Al-Quds Media and Communication Centre" showed support for Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat plummeting to 23%, the lowest rating ever for
              the Palestinian leader.

In contrast, support for the Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, rose to 20.7%
and for its junior sister, the Islamic Jihad organization, to 5.7%.

The poll, which PA-affiliated newspapers and media shunned, 85% of Palestinians
supported the continuation of the intifada.

Moreover, 84% of the respondents said they supported armed operations against
              Zionist occupation and apartheid.

Support for the defunct Oslo Accords plummeted from 38% in June to just 29%,
with 41% considering the peace process to be dead with no possibility of
              resuming negotiations.

The poll accentuates the growing gap between the official line of the PA
leadership and the Palestinian public opinion.

          W oczach wroga...

Hamas takes responsibility for another resistance attack against Zionist
          terrorists

Occupied Jerusalem - Hamas military wing, the Izzedin Al-Qassam Brigades, has
taken responsibility for the daring resistance attack on Jewish terrorists at
the settlement of Eli Sinai in northern Gaza last night.

A statement issued by Izzedin al Qassam Wednesday said "our heroic martyrs
carried out this operation against the war criminals and Zionist terrorists on
behalf of the Arab and Islamic Umma."

The statement said the Palestinian people had no choice except to resist and
fight back against those "criminals and terrorists who are occupying our land
          and tormenting our people."

The statement identified the two martyrs of the operation as Ibrahim Nezar
Rayyan, 17 years, and Abdullah Audeh Sha'aban, 21 years, both of Jabalia.

A fierce armed clash between the freedom fighters and the Zionist terrorists
lasted for over two hours, in which two Zionist terrorists, both soldiers in
          the apartheid army, were killed.

Fifteen other soldiers and para-military terrorists were injured some seriously.

“Israel”, the world's last-remaining apartheid state, has been persecuting
Palestinians in an effort to get them to leave their ancestral homeland in
order to build an exclusive Jewish state.

Through bribes and generous financial contributions, the American Jewish lobby
has succeeded in overtaking the Congress of the United States, thus wining
unconditional American support for the evil Zionist designs against the
          Palestinians.

Officials: Bush not putting pressure on Israel
      By Janine Zacharia

WASHINGTON (October 4) - President George W. Bush's comments Tuesday on
Palestinian statehood, which sparked an outpouring of concern among Israel
supporters, were not designed to signal that the US would be bringing more
pressure on Israel, officials and well-placed sources here said.

Rather administration officials hoped Bush's comment - that Palestinian
statehood had always been part of a "vision" - would appease Arab states, which
have urged deeper US involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and which
have not been as forthcoming so far as the US would like in the war on
      terrorism.

But officials say that involvement will have to be creative, and not
necessarily deeper. Former US assistant secretary of state and ambassador to
Israel Martin Indyk has been calling this week for the US to immediately
appoint a special Middle East envoy to help solidify the battered cease-fire
struck by PA Chairman Yasser Arafat and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.

Administration sources say the US is considering no such option, and point to
the fact that Dennis Ross served as special envoy for the first five months of
the intifada with no success in bringing an end to hostilities.

Prior to the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US, Washington was abuzz
with speculation about whether the US would use the UN General Assembly that
had been scheduled for September 24 to launch a new Middle East initiative to
help calm the intifada, and whether Bush would meet with Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasser Arafat in New York.

The Jerusalem Post reported on September 9 that Secretary of State Colin Powell
might announce US support for a Palestinian state in his address as a means of
placating Arab states who say the US has been too pro-Israel.

But he never got the chance to do so, as the General Assembly was canceled.

With the US concerned that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could damage its
top priority - to destroy the Qaida network and Osama bin Laden - it is
exploring new ways of engaging in the Middle East morass.

Administration sources say the US is considering no such option, and point to
the fact that Dennis Ross served as special envoy for the first five months of
the intifada with no success in bringing an end to hostilities.

"There's nothing planned right now," said one US official about possible US
moves regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "It could change tomorrow
      though."

One source familiar with administration thinking said it would be erroneous to
view Bush's airing of support for a Palestinian state "through the prism of
      pressure on Israel."

Administration officials are fed up with bad US press in the Arab media, and
support for a Palestinian state, they believe, is a rhetorical device "that
isn't necessarily a movement of the goal post," the source said.

One Democratic legislative aide on the House International Relations Committee
said the Bush administration's announcement of support for Palestinian
statehood is stating an obvious fact that nobody speaks about publicly.

"We knew it even though they've never said it," the staffer said. "They are
blowing smoke on a non-issue in order to give our erstwhile Arab allies the
impression that we are sympathetic to the Palestinians."

But others saw the statement as indeed damning for Israel.

The pro-Israel lobby AIPAC said in response that until Arafat "decides to stand
against terrorism, it is unthinkable to grant him a meeting with the presiden

(13:25) Flight from Tel Aviv downed in suspected terror attack
      By Jerusalem Post Internet Staff

Siberian Airlines flight 1812 carrying at least 66 passengers and 11 crew
members from Tel Aviv has crashed into the Black Sea.

Fifty-one of the passengers were Israelis, many of them recent immigrants from
the former Soviet Union. They had embarked this morning on a holiday, according
      to Russia's NTV television network.

The Russian Federal Security Service thinks the crash might have been caused by
      a terrorist act.

"All information from the crash scene is being analyzed. The version that it is
a terrorist act has been given priority, bearing in mind the recent
international developments," a representative of the Federal Security Service's
      public relations center told Interfax.

Transport Minister Ephraim Sneh told The Associated Press that it is too early
to confirm the crash was an act of terrorism.

Interfax is reporting a possible explosion on board before the Siberia-bound
      plane crashed into the sea.

The pilot of an Armenian plane in the area reported seeing a passenger plane
exploding in mid-air, according to Interfax.

At the time of the blast, the Armenian flight was at an altitude of 6,000
meters and the second aircraft was reportedly at 11,000 meters altitude.

Israeli authorities have banned all takeoffs of aircraft from Ben-Gurion
International Airport until the circumstances of the crash have been
      determined.

For more on this aspect of the story, click here.

The Associated Press is reporting the plane crashed into the Black Sea, 114
miles (185 kilometers) from the Russian coastal city of Adler, according to the
      Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Russian authorities have dispatched emergency rescue teams by helicopter to the
site of the crash and four bodies have now been recovered from the sea.

Israel has also dispatched search and rescue aircraft to the disaster site.

Russian and Turkish ships are also en route to the scene of the crash.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has convened an emergency meeting with his
      advisors.

The Black Sea is 3,000 feet (900 meters) deep at the location of the crash.

The regular weekly flight was heading to the Siberian city of Novosibirsk and
belonged to Siberian Airlines, headquartered in that city.

      The aircraft, a three-engine TU-154, departed Tel Aviv at 10:00 a.m. and
reportedly made an unscheduled stopover at Burgas, Bulgaria where it took on
      additional passengers.

However, Israeli authorities said the flight was originally scheduled to fly
direct to its final destination without making any intermediate stops. They
could not confirm whether or not the plane actually did stop in Bulgaria.

Itim news service said the plane took on six new passengers during the
      unplanned stop in Bulgaria.

The flight was scheduled to land in Novosibirsk at 4:00 p.m. Israel time.

The Foreign Ministry's emergency operations room has publicized its phone
      number: 02-5303155.

Ben-Gurion International Airport has also established an information hotline
for those seeking information on the downed flight.

      In Israel, call 1255-081818.

Callers outside Israel must dial 972 before the above numbers.

Ben-Gurion airport authorities have established a situation room on site and
the families of the downed flight's passengers are reportedly en route at this
      time

(16:45) Edelstein: Russian Israelis hit hard by crash
      By Miriam Shaviv

The Jewish community in Novosibirsk - the destination of the airplane which
crashed into the Black Sea this afternoon, killing at least 66 people - is "of
extremely high quality," Deputy Absorption Minister Yuli Edelstein told The
      Jerusalem Post.

"I was a Prisoner of Zion just outside the city between 1986-1987," he
revealed. "I immediately benefited from their help."

Edelstein said that members of the community sent him packages of food and he
received medical attention from a local nurse, whose boss was a Jewish doctor.

Up to 51 of the passengers on the aircraft are thought to be recent Russian
immigrants to Israel, or Russian Jews returning from a visit to Israel.

According to Edelstein, there are some 15,000 Jews in Novosibirsk, a city of
1.5 million. The community, which was already "substantial" in the nineteenth
century, has a large number of scientists attracted to the Siberian branch of
      the Russian Academy of Science.

There is "extensive" Jewish activity in the city, he said, including a Jewish
school, at least one synagogue, a community center, and representatives of the
Jewish Agency, Joint Distribution Committee, Lubavitch and other Jewish
      organizations.

Edelstein estimated that "thousands" of Jews had emigrated from Novosibirsk to
Israel in the last decade, and said that there was a lot of contact between the
      community and Israel.

"Many people still have family there that they visit. There are also trade
links and still a lot of joint scientific research," he said.

The tragedy is "a hit" to the Russian immigrant community in Israel, Edelstein
added. "We already had to cope with the loss of 21 Russian immigrants in the
Dolphinarium attack in Tel Aviv this summer," he noted.

The Absorption Ministry is "going to operate tomorrow like we do after a
terrorist attack," he said. "We will have help for the families of the
victims," he said, noting that an inter-ministerial committee established after
the bombing of the Dolphinarium disco in June was still in operation.

Sharon: We won't be another Czechoslovakia
          By Arieh O'Sullivan

JERUSALEM (October 5) - Pressured by daily deadly terror attacks, Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon last night said all attempts to reach a cease-fire have
failed and he has ordered the security forces into action against Palestinian
          terrorism.

"We can rely only on ourselves. And from today forward, we will only rely on
          ourselves," Sharon said.

Speaking after the terror attack in Afula, which left three dead, Sharon called
on the West not to "appease" the Arab world by abandoning Israel in the war on
          terror.

"Today Israel suffered another murderous Palestinian terrorist attack which
took a heavy toll," Sharon said. "All of our efforts to reach a cease-fire have
been torpedoed by the Palestinians. Fire did not cease, not even for one day."

Speaking at a press conference in Tel Aviv last night, Sharon said the cabinet
has instructed the security forces to take "all necessary measures" to bring
          full security.

"We are currently in the midst of a complex and difficult political campaign. I
call on the Western democracies and primarily on the leader of the free world,
the United States: Do not repeat the dreadful mistake of 1938, when enlightened
European democracies decided to sacrifice Czechoslovakia for a convenient
temporary solution. Do not try to appease the Arabs at our expense. This is
unacceptable to us. Israel will not be Czechoslovakia. Israel will fight
          terrorism."

"There is no good terrorism and bad terrorism," Sharon said. "It is worse than
murder. We have been fighting terrorism for over 100 years. Unfortunately,
there is no swift and immediate solution. But if united we confront this
terrorism, we will be able to overcome it and bring peace. And we shall
          overcome."

But the government stopped short of saying the cease-fire with the Palestinians
          is dead.

"I don't sign death certificates," said Transportation Minister Ephraim
Sneh. "Actually, we are in a situation where a cease-fire is permanently defied
by Palestinian terrorism. That is why we have to take the measures to forestall
this danger and to fight back."

Sneh also refused to elaborate on what security steps will be taken. "Wait and
          see," he said.

Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said last night that the
Palestinians "will have to pay a heavy price for this kind of attacks."

Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz said the IDF has not detected any
attempt by the Palestinian Authority to enforce the cease-fire.

"There is no war on terror by the Palestinian Authority and they don't even
carry out arrests," Mofaz told reporters in Tel Aviv.

While not repeating his claim that the PA is a "terrorist entity," Mofaz said
it has never abandoned its belligerent goal.

Meanwhile, PA Chairman Yasser Arafat convened the PLO leadership in Ramallah
yesterday to discuss the situation and how to deal with the latest
          developments, Palestinian sources said.

The PA has been saying that it is unable to arrest terrorists while Israel is
killing Palestinians. But Arafat is under growing pressure to take action, a PA
          source said.

He knows that he must deal with militants who are challenging his orders and
continue to carry out attacks, the source said. But as Hamas and Islamic Jihad
have fought side-by-side with Fatah during the intifada, he can not suddenly
start to arrest them, the source added.

Arafat wants to first try to convince them to stop carrying out attacks and
          only then start to make

Jewish, Arab youth establish Succot peace tent
                By David Rudge

JERUSALEM (October 5) - Scores of Jewish and Arab youths are expected to take
part in a get-together today at a Succot holiday "Peace Tent" that they have
set up near the Yuvalim junction in the Misgav region of the Galilee to promote
                coexistence.

The gathering under one roof of members of the Shomer Hatzair youth group and
counterparts from the secular Arab Youth Movement marks the culmination of a
                year of joint activities.

Shomer Hatzair spokesman Aviv Leshem said the contacts were made shortly after
the "bloody events in the Arab sector last October" as part of efforts to
reforge ties between Jews and Arabs at the grassroots level.

Leshem said the Jewish youth movement is committed to promoting coexistence as
a means to achieving peace and understanding between peoples and nations.

The Shomer Hatzair movement initiated the contact with the Arab Youth Movement
shortly after the riots that swept through the Israeli Arab sector last
October, in which 13 Arabs and a Jew were killed and scores of people injured.

Since then, the two groups have held various joint activities between
counsellors and members, and it is intended to increase this cooperation in the
                future.

"We hope that there will be a symposium at the conclusion of the get-together
in the peace tent at which a joint proposal will be reached about the need to
return to the ideas in Israel's Declaration of Independence that refer to full
equal rights for all citizens regardless of race, color, creed, or religion,"
                said Leshem.

MR. FLEISCHER: Good afternoon. Before I begin the briefing, I just want to, for
a few brief moments, introduce you to Secretary of Health and Human Services
Tommy Thompson, and Dr. Scott Lillibridge, also of the Department of Health and
Human Services, formerly of the Centers for Disease Control. They want to just
share a little information to follow up an announcement that was made earlier
today by officials in the state of Florida, at a news conference that concluded
      just a little time ago.

      Secretary Thompson.

SECRETARY THOMPSON: Thank you very much, Ari. And let me, as Ari indicated,
just bring you up to date with the information that we have concerning the
incident that took place in the state of Florida, and also following up on the
information that the state of Florida has released within the last hour.

The Centers for Disease Control has just confirmed the diagnosis of anthrax in
a patient in a Florida hospital. Based on what we know at this point, it
appears it is an isolated case.

I want to make sure that everybody understands that anthrax is not contagious
and is not communicable, which means it does not spread from person to person.
If it is caught early enough, it can be prevented and treated with antibiotics.
The Centers for Disease Control has a ready supply, and if our investigation
shows anyone else needs treatment, they will be notified and treated.

Our public health reporting system worked in a very timely fashion, as I
indicated in my testimony yesterday. Florida public health officials promptly
notified their state health department, who then notified the Centers for
Disease Control and the FBI. And officials are aggressively investigating the
individual's schedule for the last two weeks and the source of the infection.

I want everybody to understand that sporadic cases of anthrax do occur in the
United States. The most recent one was within the past year in the state of
Texas. And there was a case in Florida in 1974. The last reported case that we
know of was within the last year

      Fatah leader rejects ceasefire call

Five recent killings in Hebron have angered Palestinians

A key factional leader has rejected the latest call by the Palestinian
authority for a united commitment to a ceasefire with Israel.
The influential Marwan Bargouthi, who leads Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's
Fatah movement in the West Bank, said it was the right of Palestinians to
      defend themselves.

The news came as Palestinian radio reported two dead in an exchange of fire
with Israeli troops in the town of Hebron.

BBC correspondent Kylie Morris says that despite being leaders of the same
organisation, Mr Bargouthi and Mr Arafat vary greatly on what is in the
      national interest.

      Limit attacks

Mr Arafat, after a meeting in Gaza City, declared that those who stray from the
ceasefire, harm the national interest and provide cover for Israel to accuse
      Palestinians of acts of terror.

Marwan Barghouti, a second generation Fatah leader and revolutionary

The leadership said it would take measures to limit attacks at odds with the
      national interest.

But Marwan Bargouthi says with as many as 30 Palestinians killed since the
authority recommitted to the ceasefire 10 days ago, it is the right of
      Palestinians to respond in kind.

He says the people have spoken and insisted that the intifada continue until
      they win liberty and independence.

A chasm also remains between the Palestinian Authority position and that of
Islamic militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The Palestinian authority says it has warned militant groups to heed the
ceasefire, but this has not been confirmed by the groups themselves.

      Secret meeting

Although a secret meeting took place on Thursday between police and Hamas in
Gaza - with an agreement that both parties should try to avoid making trouble
for one another - that is as near as the authority has come to pushing home the
message that the ceasefire must be observed.

There is continuing pressure from the international community and from Israel
for the Palestinians to go one step further and arrest militants who Israel
      blames for acts of terror.

In a weekend interview Gaza preventive security chief Muhammad Dahalan said he
could not begin to make arrests while Israel continued to commit aggression
against the Palestinian Authority and its people.

He said he could not round up militants while Israel sends in tanks to raid
      Palestinian-ruled areas.

      Troops remain

Israeli tanks remained 500m inside Palestinian territory in Gaza's north and
deep inside the West Bank town of Hebron after violent incursions earlier this
week, in which left six Palestinians and two Israelis dead.

The Israeli defence forces have not said how long there forces will stay.

In a simultaneous operation armoured bulldozers have been clearing farms, olive
groves, and security posts to make a buffer zone running six kilometres along
the northern most edge of the Gaza strip.

US ‘unfit’ to lead war on terrorism
Nasrallah warns against promoting American self-interests
            Cilina Nasser
            Daily Star staff

Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said Tuesday that the
United States was unfit to lead the world in a war against terrorism. He warned
that the “war on terrorism” could involve promoting unrest in Arab countries.
“Terrorism will continue to have only a loose meaning, so that only America can
outline its definition in accordance with its own interests,” Nasrallah said.
He made the comments at the Bristol Hotel during a joint emergency meeting of
the Follow Up and Coordinating Committee for the Islamic National Conference
and the General Secretariats of the National Arab Conference, in Beirut. The
meeting was called to determine future steps taken to deal with the United
            States following last month’s attacks.
“America is afraid to clearly define terrorism to prevent it from being held
accountable for its actions because of a specific definition,” he said.
Nasrallah said the war which the United States has declared against terror was
deliberately vague, to better serve its interests. “America needs a vague enemy
to justify the internationalization of this war.”
Nasrallah said Arab-Islamic coordination was therefore required “to impose a
clear, specified and correct definition of terrorism, and to distinguish it
from the concept of legitimate resistance.
“This issue should neither be neglected nor be treated lightly,” he said,
warning that “America must not be given the chance to impose a reality that
            suits its own loose definition.”
Nasrallah reiterated his total rejection of having the US lead a coalition of
international forces, claiming that it was neither qualified nor honest enough
to do so. “(The US) supports the terrorist Zionist state with all the strength
it possesses,” he said. “It has practiced terrorism in the most horrible ways
(such as) when it used nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
“(The US) will therefore take advantage of the war against terror to exercise
the worst of its terrorist acts again,” he predicted.
Nasrallah urged Arabs to see how greatly the US was affected by last month’s
attacks. “It’s quite clear that America after Sept. 11 is not the same as it
was before … and whatever it does it will not be the way it was,” he
said. “Those who did not fear it before Sept. 11, should not fear it after.”
He also said that the events in Washington and New York could herald the
beginning of the end for the world’s only superpower, and he drew comparisons
with the sudden collapse of the former Soviet Union.
He warned those who would support the US that America’s plans involved a
broader conflict, and that Afghanistan was only the first of several additional
            stages.
“No one will be excluded from this new war,” he said. “The US administration
will work on imposing its will for political and military solutions in all
conflicts around the world, and in the forefront will be the Arab-Israeli
struggle, the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem.” Nasrallah also predicted that
the US would eventually label anyone who opposed taking away the rights of
            Arabs as a “terrorist.”
“It is therefore wrong for groups to think of protecting themselves first. T

For Now, Hamas and Hezbollah Are Not Targets in War on Terror
Elaine Sciolino and Michael R. Gordon
New York Times Service Friday, October 5, 2001

[IMRA: This item, that appeared in the Herald Tribune today, proves that
criticism of American policy in excluding terrorists such as Hamas was in its
place AND REMAINS IN ITS PLACE.]
WASHINGTON Even as the Bush administration mobilizes for war in Afghanistan, it
has been unable to resolve where two anti-Israeli organizations - Hezbollah and
Hamas - fit into its global campaign against terrorism, according to senior
      U.S. administration officials.
The debate, which pits the State Department against some senior civilians at
the Pentagon, has long-term implications for the breadth and duration of the
war to ”eradicate terrorism,” as President George W. Bush has put it, as well
as for the administration’s efforts to broker a peace agreement between the
      Israelis and the Palestinians.
There is full agreement within the Bush administration that its first priority
in responding to the terror attacks last month is finding and destroying Osama
bin Laden and his network, Qaida.
Administration officials say they have put off resolving an earlier dispute
over whether Iraq should be included as a sponsor of terrorism and thus a
target in the first phase of the administration’s military campaign.
But the situation with Hezbollah - the Lebanese Shiite Muslim militia whose
name means Party of God - and the Palestinian group Hamas is different. For
more than a decade, the United States has defined them as the two main anti-
Israeli terrorist groups and has branded Iran and Syria as state sponsors of
terrorism because of their support for the groups.
But some senior administration officials said that training the spotlight on
Hezbollah and Hamas would blur the current mission and erode international
support, particularly among Arab countries, for striking militarily against
      Qaida.
”This isn’t a Hezbollah moment,” a senior U.S. official said. ”It’s an Osama
bin Laden moment. It’s very important to take this one step at a time.”
Another senior official indicated that the dispute might have been deferred,
but that it had not been defused. ”It’s a big fight,” the official said.
The United States has identified many terrorist groups around the world, but
not all of them represent a threat to the United States.
Mr. Bush has said that the United States will confront what he defines as
foreign terrorist groups with global reach. The issue now is whether Hezbollah
and Hamas fall into that category.
The first round in the debate over those groups involves a seemingly technical
dispute over an executive order issued last week.
Neither Hezbollah nor Hamas, both of which receive varying levels of support
from Iran and Syria, was included. The omission of Hezbollah and Hamas followed
a debate in which the State Department argued forcefully that there was no
clear evidence linking either group to Qaida and that maintaining the
separation was crucial to building as wide an international coalition as
      possible, administration officials said.

GAZA - Palestinian Authority police shot dead three Palestinian protesters
on Monday during a rally against US attack of Afghanistan

Palestinian police clashed near Gaza Islamic University with Palestinian stone-
throwers killing three demonstrators and injuring 40 others during a
demonstration banned by the Palestinian Authority.

Thousands of protesters went to the streets one day after the US air strikes on
Afghanistan chanting in support of Ossama Bin Laden.

Bin Laden, in his first verified statement since the September 11 attacks,
highlighted the Palestinian suffering from US-backed Israeli military
occupation. He swore in videotaped remarks broadcast on Sunday that the United
States would not live in peace ``until peace reigns in Palestine.''

Palestinians have been waging an uprising for the past year against Israeli
military occupation. Almost 800 people have been killed.

Arabs accuse U.S. ally Israel of terrorism against Palestinians spoke of double
      standards.

But Palestinian leaders, while criticizing Israel, were quick to Rejecting bin
Laden's support against Israel, Palestinian minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said:
``It is true that there is oppression, terrorism, killing in Palestine
committed daily. But this doesn't justify or give a cover for anybody to kill
or terrorize civilians in Washington and New York or any other place.''

In the West Bank and Gaza Strip, ordinary Palestinians said they welcomed any
sympathy for their cause against Israeli occupation, but the killing of
innocent civilians was not the path their struggle should take.

Palestinians hope the United States will not harm civilians and innocents of
the poverty-stricken Afghanistan, and then come back to the Middle East to
assist in reaching a just settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict
considering the problem of the Middle East is a main motivation for what has
      been happening.

        Israel mourns air disaster victims
        By Gil Hoffman

JERUSALEM (October 12) - Flags were lowered to half-staff at government
institutions yesterday to mourn the victims of last week's Sibir Airlines
disaster, but MKs questioned whether the Knesset's special mourning session was
handled with the proper respect for the victims' families.

Six of the victims of the crash were buried yesterday and another is to be
        buried today.

About 50 family members came to the Knesset for the ceremonial session, along
with President Moshe Katsav, Russian Ambas-sador Michael Bogdanov, Chief
Ashkenazi Rabbi Yisrael Lau, and Jewish Agency Chairman Sallai Meridor.

The session opened with a moment of silence for the victims, but many of the
family members did not understand the rest of the 90-minute session, because
they were not provided with a simultaneous translation of the proceedings into
        Russian.

The lack of simultaneous translations "made them feel a little insulted,"
Deputy Absorption Minister Yuli Edelstein said.

Yisrael Ba'aliya MK Marina Solodkin wrote a letter to Knesset Speaker Avraham
Burg asking why the families, who came from all over the country at their own
expense, were not given a customary reception in his office.

Solodkin said she was also surprised to see them paying for their own food at
        the very expensive Knesset cafeteria.

"It pains me that a respectful session intended to draw people closer was
ruined by insensitivity and disregard for important details," Solodkin wrote.

The Knesset issued a statement in response to the letter, shifting the blame
for the lack of simultaneous translations and refreshments to the Absorption
Ministry, which denied responsibility for the mistakes.

The session also suffered from a low turnout, as just 74 of the 120 MKs were
present at its start. The overwhelming majority of the MKs who came left after
the key speeches of Burg, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and opposition leader
        Yossi Sarid.

The two Arab MKs who attended, Ahmed Tibi and Abdel-Malik Dehamshe, left during
Sharon's speech, to protest against his criticism of the Palestinian Authority.

The problems marred a session that Burg, a former Jewish Agency chairman, hoped
would answer allegations that Israeli society has not mourned properly for the
victims because they are immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

"Immigrants are an inseparable part of our lives, in life and in death, when
times are good and when times are sad," Burg said in a speech that was also
read in the Russian parliament, the Duma. "It is impossible to love immigration
and not the immigrants. It is forbidden to speak about immigration without
being obligated to properly absorb immigrants without discrimination and
preconceptions." Burg called on the government to create new initiatives and
MKs to devise legislation to help meet the needs of new immigrants.

The Inter-ministerial Committee on Immigration met yesterday to begin devising
a way to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims' families. A decision
will be reported to the Knesset Absorption Committee next week.

A move to provide them with the same assistance given to families of terror
victims was blocked by Attorney-General Elyakim Rubinstein, who said it would
set a precedent for future demands that the government could not handle.

Sharon noted the heavy price the immigrant community has paid over the past
year in the list of casualties in the intifada. Forty-eight new immigrants fell
victim to terrorism over the past year of violence, including 37 from the
        former Soviet Union.

NOTE TO ISRAELI MEDIA: PLEASE CONFIRM REPORTS - STOP THE RUMORS!

In the last 24 hours, news reports concerning Israel's preparedness regarding
biological / chemical attacks and settlers poisoning Palestinian water supplies
have not been based on fact - but rather on rumors!

Please act professionally, stop spreading rumors which serve only our enemies
      PR efforts.
As the White House urges the US news media to use judgment in airing al Qaeda
statements, we in Israel must be vigilant in judgement and use of airing
statements by the PA, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hizbollah, Iran, Syria and Iraq. In
addition, Israeli journalists should secure at least two reliable Israeli
sources (including the Ministries of Information, Defense, Foreign Affairs and
the Government Press Office) which can confirm or deny a report before it is
      printed or published.
We need not do the public relations or crisis communications of those terrorist
organizations which are sworn to Israel's destruction!

Let's maintain a media which is respected for it's accuracy, objectivity,
balance and sensitivity to the Israeli and world public, while realizing that
the State of Israel is in a state of war with local and global terror
organizations and must adjust it's editorial copy / reporting and self-
      censorship accordingly.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Long-range attack

The United States has aircraft which can fly thousands of miles to drop a large
weight of bombs or launch other weapons.

The B-52 Stratofortress is a huge, heavy, intercontinental bomber from the Cold
War years, used in both Vietnam and the Gulf War.

It has a crew of five and can carry up to 20 cruise missiles.

Seven of the aircraft flew from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana at the
start of the Gulf War to fire their missiles at Baghdad - the longest known
combat sorties in history, taking 35 hours to cover more than 14,000 miles.

Washington has sent B-52s to the Gulf area. They are routinely deployed on
Diego Garcia, a British Territory in the Indian Ocean which has major military
        facilities.

The more recent B-1B Lancer is another bomber capable of flying
        intercontinental missions without refuelling.

It has a crew of four and can fly at speeds in excess of 900mph.

Originally intended to carry nuclear weapons to penetrate Soviet defences, the
swing-wing B-1 was first used in combat against Iraq during Operation Desert
        Storm.

Some of its sophisticated systems have shown problems though it operated
        reliably during the Kosovo conflict.

        Stealth aircraft

The third type of long-range American bomber is the two-crew B-2 Spirit - at
some $2.2 billion each it is the world's most costly aircraft.

It has stealth features - technologies that make military machines less easy to
detect with radar - which account for its bizarre, triangular shape.

Stealth is a combination of design, coverings to reduce reflection or
radar "signature", and other techniques such as masking the heat from engines.
Stealth aircraft are harder to spot but not invisible.

B-2s from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, Diego Garcia and Guam can cover
the whole world with only one mid-air refuelling.

Its first combat missions were in 1999 when B-2s from Missouri struck at Serbia
        and Kosovo.

But there have been problems with the aircraft's radar-absorbing skin, which
can be damaged by moisture and bad weather.

The spiky, dart-shaped F-117A was the world's first operational stealth
aircraft, known as a fighter but used usually as a bomber, carrying just two,
        2000-lb laser-guided bombs.

It is a relatively small, single-seat aircraft typically used for precision
attacks against difficult targets, especially early on in an air campaign.

F-117As flew more than a third of the bombing missions on the first day of the
Gulf War although there were only 36 of them among 1,900 allied combat
        aircraft.

They were used again in Kosovo, where one was brought down by Serbian air
        defences.

Although not capable of operating from aircraft carriers, they can refuel in
flight from tanker aircraft to give them an unlimited range.

Both stealth aircraft are relatively slow - achieving "high subsonic" speeds.

(11:45) Iraqi agent aided NYC terrorist
        By Melissa Radler

NEW YORK-An Iraqi intelligence agent who met with suspected September 11
hijacker Mohammed Atta six months ago in Prague helped devise the terrorist
tactics that downed the World Trade Center and part of the Pentagon, according
        to an Iraqi opposition group.

According to an official at the Iraqi National Congress in Washington, the
terrorist plot was hatched by Farouk Al-Hijazi, Iraq's current ambassador to
Turkey and former brigadier-general at the General Intelligence Directorate,
and Brig.-Gen. Habib Al-Ma'amouri of the GID.

"The plan of controlling a civilian airplane with full fuel tanks by teams of
five using items that can be easily carried aboard a plane such as knives and
then using the plane as a guided missile was hatched by Al-Ma'amouri and
Hijazi ... some time before 1995," said the INC official.

Al-Qaida link to kidnap of tourists

      Brian Whitaker
      Saturday October 13, 2001
      The Guardian

An armed group that kidnapped 16 western tourists in 1998 was part of the al-
Qaida network, a former prime minister of Yemen said yesterday.
The tourists - 12 Britons, two Australians and two Americans - were taken
hostage in southern Yemen by the Islamic Army of Aden-Abyan. Four died during a
      rescue attempt by security forces.

Abd al-Karim al-Iryani, who was prime minister of Yemen at the time, said he
was "absolutely sure" that those involved were connected to Osama bin
Laden. "The Islamic Army was part of al-Qaida," he said.

Barely an hour after seizing the tourists, the leader of the Islamic Army
phoned Abu Hamza al-Masri, a preacher at Finsbury Park mosque in London, to
      discuss the kidnap.

Abu Hamza later issued a press release headed: "Yemen hostage communique No 1."

The Yemeni government this week renewed a call for Britain to hand over Abu
Hamza for trial. Britain has no extradition agreement with Yemen and has turned
      down earlier requests.

Yemen accuses Abu Hamza of having sent 10 young men from Britain, including his
son and a stepson, to attack British and American targets in Aden.

Six of the men were arrested in December 1998 before any attacks took place.
According to the Yemenis, the Islamic Army then kidnapped the tourists in the
hope of securing the men's release.

      Thursday October 11, 2001
      The Guardian

A stream of commentators have been asserting that the tragedy of September 11
proves that I was utterly wrong to have said more than a decade ago that we had
reached the end of history. It is, on the face of it, insulting to the memory
of those who died to declare that this unprecedented attack did not rise to the
level of a historical event. But the way in which I used the word history was
different: it referred to the progress over the centuries toward modernity,
characterised by institutions like democracy and capitalism.
My observation, made in 1989 on the eve of the collapse of communism, was that
this evolutionary process did seem to be bringing ever larger parts of the
world toward modernity. And if we looked beyond liberal democracy and markets,
there was nothing else towards which we could expect to evolve; hence the end
of history. While there were retrograde areas that resisted that process, it
was hard to find a viable alternative civilisation that people actually wanted
to live in after the discrediting of socialism, monarchy, fascism and other
      types of authoritarianism.

This view has been challenged by many people, and perhaps most articulately by
Samuel Huntington. He argued that rather than progressing toward a single
global system, the world remained mired in a "clash of civilisations" in which
six or seven major cultural groups would co-exist without converging and
constitute the new fracture lines of global conflict. Since the successful
attack on the centre of global capitalism was evidently perpetrated by Islamic
extremists unhappy with the very existence of western civilisation, observers
have been handicapping the Huntington "clash" view over my own "end of history"
      hypothesis.

I believe that in the end I remain right: modernity is a very powerful freight
train that will not be derailed by recent events, however painful. Democracy
and free markets will continue to expand as the dominant organising principles
for much of the world. But it is worthwhile thinking about what the true scope
      of the present challenge is.

Modernity has a cultural basis. Liberal democracy and free markets do not work
everywhere. They work best in societies with certain values whose origins may
not be entirely rational. It is not an accident that modern liberal democracy
emerged first in the Christian west, since the universalism of democratic
rights can be seen as a secular form of Christian universalism.

The central question raised by Huntington is whether institutions of modernity
will work only in the west, or whether there is something broader in their
appeal that will allow them to make headway elsewhere. I believe there is. The
proof lies in the progress that democracy and free markets have made in regions
such as east Asia, Latin America, orthodox Europe, south Asia and even Africa.
Proof lies also in the millions of developing world immigrants who vote with
their feet every year to live in western societies. The flow of people moving
in the opposite direction, and the number who want to blow up what they can of
the west, is by contrast negligible.

But there does seem to be something about Islam, or at least the fundamentalist
versions of Islam that have been dominant in recent years, that makes Muslim
societies particularly resistant to modernity. Of all contemporary cultural
systems, the Islamic world has the fewest democracies (Turkey alone qualifies),
and contains no countries that ha

      Yoyo,
I am more explicit than you. This decade is not the last chance of Islam, it is
      their end.
I consider that Islam is not a religion :
      - Islam doesn't focus of people , but on land
      - What matters in Islam is not wether someone is Muslim, but wether the land is
      Islamic
      - Islam is an imperialist conqueror system, where, once a land is conquered,
and had become islamic, it cannot by no way and no time, at any price, be non-
      islamic. Islam is an EMPIRE.
      - All the empires are based on a logic of growth, and conquer, because their
population are feared, and the only way to maintain fear is to show that no
matter wether you are right or wrong, the success is always in your side.
      - As a consequence, and as proven by History, every time an Empire starts to
lose lands, the Empire disappears. This is the reason why the arabs, who have
99% or energy resources of the world, and 50% of the lands, are so much
disturbed by the 200 sq km that Israel has. Because if they allow that, they
will lose EVERYTHING, and their population will not be scared and will not
respect them, and they'll see their END.

      Shabbat Shalom

      Yoyo,
Muslims are NOT descendant of Ishmael. It's just an opportunity they have
taken, to give a look to their stuff.
Look : Judaism knows what the problem of genealogy means. To build a genealogy,
you NEED A 100% guarantee on the rules of marriage, and 100% control of any
suspicious birth. This doesn't mean that those who are born out of the rules of
marriage are not respected. It simply means that their genealogy is not
certain. Form Ismael to Muhammad, there is a period of about 2400 years,
without genealogic control, no rules for marriage, no rules for genealogy. How
come can you say that someone is descendant of Ismael in these conditions !!!!
Notice that once un-controlled the genealogy un-certainty propagates at the
same speed as an epidemy (with no judgement, just the mathematical aspect).
Now, in addition to that, you must know that, contrary to what people think in
general, Islam doesn't have strong rules to control marriage. There's even a
Hadith that I have read on the net, where 4 followers of Muhammad had kidnapped
4 women, and they wanted to get money in exchange. Meanwhile, they asked
Muhammad wether they were allowed to have sex with them or not. And Muhammad
answered : Yes you can, because the souls that will be born out of this are
anyway already "written" in heaven, in the Maktub (destiny).

How can you speak about any kind of genealogy in these conditions ??????????

This decade is the last chance for Muslims across the world to forget about
there crusadic attitude or river of blood will spill over this planet in the
final battle west versus east. Don't forget, G-d said of everything written:
good will happen no matter what but bad can be withdraw if man deserve it.

Come on son of Ishmael WAKE UP!
