British accent

IP: *.acn.waw.pl 16.01.04, 19:43
Please, help me! How can I learn a proper British accent without going to
England? I'm 17, my English is quite good. I don't know if I can change the
accent at such age, maybe I'm too old...:(

      Basiu:
It is not the age but special talent to learn languages. Some pick it up in no
time, others never do regardless where they live.
My suggestion: rent(sorry: "hire") some video tapes in English, something
simple, no slang or phony accents, perhaps cartoons, and listen and repeat what
you hear. It is not enough just to listen, you must speak and compare.

It's possible to pick up a fairly good English English accent without going to
England. One way is to use a pronunciation / phonology book (most come with
tapes). I've used: Better English Pronunciation by J.D. O'Connor (Cambridge
University Press), and it's pretty good.

I'd also recommend listening to BBC internet radio.

No, you can't. You're going to live and die with your horribly non-British
      accent. Face it.

        Helper is quite right

but simple 'repeating' doesn't help... You will retain your mistakes. Try to
get a tape (an audiobook) and its text, read the text, then repeat very small
chunks (like 1 word or phrase) w/o looking at the text. Don't 'say' the word,
imitate what you hear. But in fact it's very hard to master a perfect accent.

        • Gość: dokt0r its not THAT hard IP: *.pth0304.pth.iprimus.net.au 18.01.04, 06:51
really, its not that hard. you just have to practice a lot. you'll 'learn' it
much faster if you actually go there and stay for like 2 years at least.
otherwise you need to practice for at least 4-6 hours a day.

if you're at high school, i strongly suggest studying in english, there's plenty
          of books available.

also, it'd be a good idea to find a voice chat room on the internet - this way
you wont spend fortune on phone calls.

if you can, watch those boring tv shows like the bill, casualty, etc., whatever
          takes your fancy.

you're not too old :) i think the best idea would be to actually go to uk and
finish high school there, i.e. year 11 and 12. otherwise you need to keep
practicing a lot, i'd say at least 4 hours a day. tv and radio aren't enough if
you actually want to speak with british accent. then again, there are several
different accents in uk, so make up your mind which one you want to get used to.

      just curious, why british?

        Yep. Doable.

British = RP. Other varieties are hard to come across - textbooks (in
phonetics) are RP, news are RP, TV is (more or less) RP.

You *might* 'The Weakest Link' on BBC Prime - it's quite a challenge - I'm far
from understanding all of the questions, let alone answering them! :)

what does it mean " proper british accent??? sorry, i don't understand. there
is no proper polish accent i reckon... If u go and live somewhere you acquire
the accent of people around you.... if you learn from the tapes and other stuff
then your language is far from the realistic one...you choose. i speak sort of
kentish middle-class-like accent... that's pretty shitty one but what can I
      do?

Hehe, you could stop deceiving yourself, for starters. In fact your British
        accent reeks of Polish :-)

Well, I guess nazi, you're a pretty underrated fascist then. As you can even
actually hear the accent without even speking to the person, but only basing
on what they write on the forum.

          I must admit that's impressive.

          later,

and some people have been living in Kent for 6 years and have just come to
Poland to see what's going on and read some nazi's bullshit :)
go ahead lad... i'm coming back home:)
BTW, don't u know that ALL native-speakers of ALL languages DO make mistakes?
              only genius-learners don't - that's how we know they are foreigners :)
