Wives of gay men were 'wigs' and it has been used to mean 'bitch', particularly related to a queen (male gay taking the female role). I don't know about wives and girlfriends more generally, but I can see the link to Jewish humour. To an older generation South Londoner, 'wigs' were the legal profession (lawyers, etc), which was sometimes used as an extreme term of abuse for people in 'the professions': "They're all ***** wigs".
