Hoping for the Best
Trade figures have been deteriorating and the value of direct investments by
Amerian businesspeople has been falling in Poland.
Many experts contend that President Aleksander Kwaśniewski's visit to the
United States may improve Poland's commerce with the United States and
attract overseas investors.
Poland is hardly among the United States' major trading partners. The total
value of trade between the two nations is negligible compared to that with
other countries of a similar size. The United States is ranked 7th in terms
of imports from Poland and 12th regarding exports.
Imports from the United States dropped from over $2 billion to $1.7 billion
last year. Exports were falling less rapidly, from $995.2 million to nearly
$852 million. The value of foreign investment from the United States fell
almost fivefold, from $2.15 billion to only $455.7 million.
"Direct investments from the United States are definitely too low. Our
political partnership should be matched by an economic partnership," believes
Antoni Styrczula, president of the Polish Agency for Foreign Investment
(PAIZ).
Economists blame both partners for this inadequate trade. American
entrepreneurs have for years been complaining about the poor conditions in
Poland, including excessive bureaucracy, high taxes and too much pressure
from trade unions. In their view, the investment climate has deteriorated in
Poland over the past two or three years.
