US ignoring its ANZUS pact partner
        John Kerin
        11jan06

THE US's commitment to the ANZUS alliance has been questioned after
Washington's failure to appoint a new ambassador to Canberra and the last-
minute cancellation of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's visit to Australia.

Writing in The Australian today, former deputy defence secretary Paul Dibb says
Washington's attention appears to be elsewhere.
"It is a reflection of the greater geopolitical importance of the Middle East
        in Washington," Mr Dibb says.

The US ambassadorial post in Canberra has been vacant since former head of
mission Tom Schieffer's departure at the end of 2004.

Dr Rice announced at the weekend that she would not be able to attend this
week's climate change talks in Sydney, citing Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon's grave ill health. Dr Rice also pulled out of the annual high-level
defence and security talks held in Australia in July.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer emerged from hastily arranged talks in
Washington with Dr Rice on Monday, saying the US had given no hint on when it
would name a replacement for Mr Schieffer.

"We would like them to appoint an ambassador as soon as possible," Mr Downer
said. "Obviously there have been some, how can I put it, there have been some
difficulties that they have encountered in relation to potential appointments,
which are really not for us. That's a matter for them.

"That would be very undiplomatic for me to start to canvass the issues. That's
        a matter for the Americans."

A source close to the Bush administration said yesterday the delay could be
explained by the President being preoccupied with a series of second-term
political crises, including the Iraq war.

"It's not a want of trying. I believe a couple of people have been approached,"
the source told The Australian. But another source said: "It's a bit puzzling
given the overall closeness of the relationship and the obvious warmth between
John Howard and George W. Bush."

But defence analyst Alan Behm did not think the US was snubbing Australia.

"I don't believe that's the case at all," he said. "I think George W. Bush is
looking for another trusted confidant like Tom Schieffer who can operate at
high level between himself and John Howard, and they won't be easy shoes to
        fill."

      niech sie maly Howard uczy:
"Condoleezza Rice needs a company of soldiers. She needs to be taken to
barracks where she would be satisfied. On the other hand, she can hardly be
satisfied because of her age", Vladimir Zhirinovsky said.
