EU to give USD 937 million to Mideast nations

Ahead of high-level talks with Israel and its Arab neighbors, the European
Union said Friday it is giving 709 million (US$937 million) in economic and
other aid to Mideast nations in 2004 to boost efforts to get Israel and the
Palestinians to make peace.
The EU awards 3 billion a year in grants and loans to its Mediterranean
partners to underpin the long-sputtering peace process, now overshadowed by
uncertainty over Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's succession.

In 2004, Egypt was the biggest beneficiary, receiving 164.5 million
(US$217.35 million), followed by Morocco, 156 million (US$206.12 million);
the Palestinian Authority, 73.5 million (US$97.12 million); Syria and
Algeria, both 55 million (US$72.67 million); Jordan, 36.5 million (US$48.23
million); Tunisia, 24 million (US$31.71 million) and Lebanon, 19.5 million
(US$25.77 million).
