Among those on this list, Canada stands out in that it is the one country that
allows same-sex couples to immigrate where neither party is a Canadian citizen
or permanent resident (“landed immigrant”). The first non-Canadian must qualify
to enter Canada on its “point system” and then can sponsor her or his partner
based on Canada’s “Humanitarian and Compassionate” grounds.

The data shows there are more lesbian couples living in rural areas, while gay
male couples tend to be in urban areas. California, Nevada, Florida and New
York rank at the top for male couples, while Vermont, New Mexico, Oregon and
Massachusetts have the most lesbian couples.

Since the late 1960s, however, throughout Europe homosexuality has become much
more accepted. One result is that gay marriage is now acceptable in Denmark,
Norway and Sweden, with Finland, Slovenia and the Netherlands, and possibly
Iceland and the Czech Republic, expected to follow suit soon. Gay common law
marriage has also been recognized by the courts in Hungary.

Tradition can''t justify discrimination. Not long ago, marriage was
traditionally limited to members of the same race and religion, and married
women were virtually the legal property of their husbands.

..."if all right-thinking people understood now that marriage is the bedrock
institution of the patriarchy, then straights as well as gays would be better
off with contractual arrangements for their families that aren''t rooted in 12th-
century Catholic dogma or Mosaic laws written for a nomadic tribe of
sheepherders in the Sinai. "...

In that context, I contend, that a marriage by the State is a bad deal for
everyone and that what society thinks of as a marriage no longer exists. State
marriages are a fraud by the government against the people and are a bad deal
for everyone. No one in his or her right mind, who understands what a state
marriage really is, would ever do it. The reality of it is that although
homosexuals think they are being discriminated against by being denied a state
marriage, in fact it is not something they would want if they really knew what
it really was.
