Expert claims Chernobyl is exaggerated
Carin Pettersson 01.10.04 12:33
«Almost no one has died or been born with deformities because of the
emissions after the Chernobyl accident,» stated UN radiation expert Zbigniew
Jaworowski.
Zbigniew Jaworowski said to the Norwegian paper Morgenbladet that he is upset
by all the misinformation which is still spread through the media. Through a
number of news paper articles it has been established that several thousand
people died and hundred thousands have become sick because of the Chernobyl
accident. Jaworowski says that it’s all just bogus.
Jaworowski is the leader as the UN committee which has been asked to
determine the effects of the radioactive radiation after the accident
(UNSCEAR).
«About ten people died in direct connection with the explosion,» Jaworowski
said. «The only other thing we have been able to determine is 1800 cases of
cancer in the pancreas, but this is seldom life-threatening, and because of
lacking statistical material, we don’t even know if this is due to the
emissions.»
Jaworowski claim he misinformation is due to the fact that the radiation from
Chernobyl was much less that what was first estimated. Between 1986 and 1995
the average radiation from the most exposed areas was at a lower level than
the average natural radiation in Norway, stated the expert.
Per Strand, department head at the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority
(NPRA) confirms that there are many questions which have not been answered in
regards to the Chernobyl disaster.
«Our mission has been connected to what the accident means in Norway, and
then we ended up with a calculation of a total of 100-500 extra cases of
cancer over a five year period because of Chernobyl,» Strand said. «This can
not be deemed as a health problem.»
