DANCERS PAY ONLY 10 ANY NIGHT!!!

Carmen Carnes/VedaDance and Priscilla Park/Juju and the Nomadic Performance
Ensemble (JuNPE) present Co-ExisDance : A shared evening of progressive
intercultural, multidisciplinary dance performance at :

Xenodrome in San Francisco, March 27, 28 and 29 and April 4 and 5 2003

What: Carmen Carnes/VedaDance and Priscilla Park/JuNPE present Co-ExisDance,
a shared evening of progressive intercultural, multidisciplinary dance
performance. ! Carmen Carnes’ San Francisco premiere, Circle, Cycle,Spiral
and Stream, called “mesmerizing,” and “poignant… and virtuosic”, is a
contemporary journey through the ancient landscape of dance as sacred ritual
connecting human life with the earth and cosmos. The physicality is informed
by spirals in nature, trance states, the ecstatic whirling of Sufi Dervishes,
Odissi dance, and tai chi. This highly kinetic ensemble piece proposes the
design of circularity in nature as a haunting metaphor for the need for
communion and compassion in the world today. Bowl O-Noodl! es is a world
premiere by Priscilla Park that takes you on a journey through cultural and
philosophical realities of the East and the West, in both humorous and
serious ways. This work is informed by Ms. Park’s experiences as an
immigrant girl, when she arrived to America and encountered the “other,” or
was she the “other?” This exciting new work integrates dance drawn from an
interesting array of physical vocabulary (including contemporary ballet,
modern dance, Butoh, Buddhist meditation poses and Korean Shamanistic
dances), multi-media, installation art, and original musical compositions.

Where: Xenodrome! , 1320 Potrero St. (at 25th) in San Francisco

When: March 27, 28, 29 at 8pm and April 4, 5 at 8pm

Two-for-one tickets available for West Coast debut of Akram Khan Dance Company
and Salia nď Seydou, Sept 18 & 19!!!

Akram Khan Dance Company. Photo courtesy of sfintlartsfest.org.

Akram Khan is one of the next great contemporary choreographers coming out of
Britain. He is kathak trained and employs this traditional form with a rigorous
and explosive modern technique. The San Francisco Festival will be Khan's West
Coast debut on his second U.S. tour.

"Hindu Gods, black holes, Indian time cycles, tablas, creation and destruction"
are the starting points for Kaash, a Hindu word meaning "What if." It is danced
by a quintet and is fifty minutes in length. Kaash harnesses some of the common
musical time cycles used in traditional Indian music as the basis for a chore!
ographic structure. The work is inspired by the notion that the behavior and
symbolism of traditional Indian Gods are representations of rhythmical patterns
and specific movement qualities. The gods are Ganesha (Elephant Headed God - 3
beats), associated with a swinging motion - Krishna (Flute playing god - 4
beats), characterized by a mischievous darting quality and Shiva (Destroyer - 7
beats), associated with vigorous, violent and explosive movement. Each pattern
takes place in a time cycle of 4 beats. The choreographic structure adopts the
cinematic idea of 'flashback' where the end is seen at the beginning and then
unravels to reveal how it arrived at its conclusion. With choreography by Akram
Khan, music by Nitin Sawhney, set design by Anish Kapoor, lighting design by
Aideen Malone, costumes Saeunn Huld, and additional music by John Oswald,
recorded by The Kronos Quartet, Kaash continues Akram Khan's quest to build
bridges between the worlds of contemporary dance and th! e Indian classical
      dance form Kathak.

Salia nď Seydou. Photo courtesy of sfintlartsfest.org

Compagnie Salia nď Seydou, Figninto (The Torn Eye)
Compagnie Salia nď Seydou is an astounding dance ensemble from Burkina Faso,
West Africa. Their performance, Figninto, is a moving tale of friendship, and
explores the challenge of sustaining communication in today's world. "What is
the value of friendship if it cannot benefit from time: the time to love, to
communicate, to reach one another? Having no time means we cut off
communication between people, forcing us apart and further away from the rest
of the world. We think instead of using! our time wisely, saving time, making
something worth the time spent on it, even trying to turn time back. With time,
everything that exists is perishable. When death comes, it is that hollow
space, tenacious, cold and ugly. One says, "He is gone, he was, he is dead."
