      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      -

The Days of Awe do not arrive suddenly and unannounced. People have been
preparing for them for a long time. The attitude of many people during the
entire month of Elul is an earnest and sober one, for soon the days of
      penitence will begin.

Undercurrents of the holidays are already beginning to be felt on the Sabbath
when the forthcoming new moon of Elul will be blessed. The first real sign,
though, is the day before Rosh Chodesh Elul. In Eastern Europe, the day before
every Rosh Chodesh (new moon) was observed as a minor day of atonement. Most
of these days were only observed by a few very pious men, however, many Jews
would fast on the day before Elul and recite selichot (prayers of
forgiveness). On the second day of Rosh Chodesh, which is really the first of
Elul, the shofar is sounded, and continues to be sounded every day for the
entire month. For these reasons, the upcoming month of Tishri (Rosh Hashanah)
does not need to be announced on the preceding Shabbat as is the custom for
every other new month. Everyone knows the new year is approaching.

It is very appropriate for Rosh Hashanah to be known as Yom Hazikaron (Day of
Memorial), because it is said that many biblical events occurred on this day
or during the month of Tishri. Rosh Hashanah is considered the birth of the
universe although some legends have it that the world was completed with the
formation of Adam on Rosh Hashanah. Some say that Cain and Abel offered their
sacrifices on Rosh Hashanah. The Akedah (binding of Isaac), and Jacob building
his altar at Beth El occurred on Rosh Hashanah. It is said that Sarah, Rachel,
and Hannah, who were childless, had their prayers answered on Rosh Hashanah.
It is also said that SolomonÕs temple was dedicated on Rosh Hashanah.

Although the rabbis condemned superstitions, it may be that a number of
symbolic customs at the table may have their origins as good luck omens.
Whereas Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are mainly celebrated and observed in the
synagogue, the home table also plays an important part in the family
observance. The custom of feasting on RoshÊ Hashanah is mentioned in the book
of Nehemiah, (8:10) where it says: "go your way, eat the fat and drink the
sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared, for this day
is holy unto the Lord." The challot are baked in different shapes, each with a
symbolic meaning. Apples or bread dipped in honey is another important custom.
Many Sephardic families eat pumpkin, fenugreek, leek, beets, and dates on Rosh
Hashanah as a sign of fertility. Sour or bitter foods for obvious reasons
      should not be served.

Following these two days, we continue to prepare for Yom Kippur, which is on
the tenth of Tishri. Yom Kippur is generally observed as a very serious day.
Even Jews who observe virtually nothing find themselves in the synagogue on
Yom Kippur, even if it is only for Memorial Services or to hear Kol Nidre.
Yet, according to theTalmud (Taanit 4:8), there were no happier days for
Israel than the fifteenth of Av and Yom Kippur. On these days, in the
afternoon, the daughters of Jerusalem used to go forth in white outfits and
dance in the vineyards. They would say to the men, "Young man, lift up thine
eyes and see what thou would choose for thyself: set not thine eyes on beauty,
but set thine eyes on family."

It is right that Yom Kippur should be an occasion for dancing for it was and
is a day of forgiveness for Israel. There should be joy in having repented.

On the Day of Atonement, eating, drinking, washing, anointing, putting on
sandals are forbidden, according to the tractate of Yoma; however, a king or a
bride may wash their faces, and a woman after childbirth may put on sandals. A
sick person is allowed to eat. Children do not fast until 12 or 13, but should
be trained a year or two before. One way is to fast until lunch. Another way
is to encourage children to eat their main meals, but not consume any "junk"
      food between meals.

From Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur, we have a chance to put our lives back
into balance, and start with a clean slate. Saying "IÕm sorry! IÕll try to be
better" is a great way to start the new year.ÊShanah tovah.

Sharon to Putin: Too late for Iraq arms inspection
      By HERB KEINON
      MOSCOW

With Russia leading international efforts to get United Nations weapons
inspectors back into Iraq, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told Russian President
Vladimir Putin yesterday that the time when these inspectors could have been
      effective has passed.

According to a senior diplomatic official in Sharon's entourage, Sharon told
Putin that Israel believes Iraq has used the four years since the UN
inspectors left to both further develop and effectively hide non-conventional
      weapons.

"The time has passed when the inspectors could do a thorough job," Sharon
      said.

Before the meeting, Putin had called for a speedy return of UN weapons
inspectors to Baghdad, but said a solution to the Iraqi issue must be found by
      the Security Council.

"Russia supports the US in its struggle against world terrorism," he said,
adding, "Israel is one of the main partners in this important coalition.
"We need to find a diplomatic, political solution to Iraq with the return of
the supervisors, according to UN resolutions," Putin added.

Putin also stressed the importance of Israeli-Russian ties and noted that
bilateral trade has risen to $1 billion a year.

According to the official, Sharon told Putin Israel will "know how to defend
itself if attacked." The senior source added that Israel's repeated warnings
of a counterattack have inspired the United States

      Metoda francuska

Ta metoda była bardzo popularna wśród wiodących francuskich pionierów podróży
astralnej pod koniec XIX wieku. W tamtym okresie Francuzi daleko wyprzedzali
resztę świata w badaniu doświadczeń poza ciałem i odnotowali ogromną liczbę
      imponujących sukcesów. (...)

Kiedy jesteś gotów zacząć, wybierz spokojny, cichy wieczór i jak zawsze
dopilnuj, żeby ci nie przeszkadzano. W pokoju powinno być ciemno i dość
      ciepło. Powinieneś być sam.

Zamknij oczy i uświadom sobie własne oddychanie. Następnie zwróć uwagę na
palce jednej stopy.

To właśnie
tutaj świadome i nieświadome częci zaczynają się naprawdę liczyć. Zmuś je do
odejścia z każdym włóknem twojej istoty, a przkonasz się, że nagle spoglądasz
na siebie w dół spod sufitu.

        Organization of Dots
        Description of the instrument

Organization of Dots provides practice in projecting virtual relationships
through tasks that require an individual to identify and outline given figures
within a cloud of dots. The projection of a potential relationship requires
that the learner search for meaning among otherwise separate phenomena.
Through repeated practice and successful completion of progressively more
difficult exercises, the instrument encourages task- intrinsic motivation and
activates a variety of cognitive functions.
        Cognitive functions developed

        Definition of the problem.
Selection of dots that are relevant to the figure that is sought.
        Planning behavior.
Hypothetical thinking and use of logical evidence.
        Summative behavior.

        Mediation of sample task

Mediation of challenge is indicated in the sample task below, in which there
are no given cues and the dots are numerous and close together. Mediation of a
feeling of competence is important as the students compare strategies of
solution. As in all tasks in Organization of Dots, there must be regulation
        and control of behavior.

        Sample task

Spontaneous comparison of projected figure to the model.

        www.icelp.org/Pictures/OrgDotsFig.jpg

Connect the dots so that the geometric figures in the first frame appear in
        each of the following frames.
The Orientations of the figures may be different from the first frame. Some
        of the figures overlap.

          Description of the instrument
Illustrations presents a collection of situations in which a problem can be
perceived and recognized. Learners attempt to offer an appropriate solution to
the identified problem. This instrument mediates learners' ability to perceive
details, use several sources of information, and exercise comparative
behavior. Illustrations lends itself to the development of vocabulary and oral
and written language; it is also highly useful for generating task- intrinsic
          motivation.
          Cognitive functions developed
          Definition of the inferred problem.
Use of relevant cues as a basis for inference.
          Use of comparative behavior.
          Use of summative behavior.
Hypothetical thinking and use of logical evidence to support conclusions.
Establishment of relationships between the individuals, objects, and events
          shown in the illustrations.
          Mediation of sample task

Goal-seeking, goal-setting, goal-planning, and goal- achieving behavior must
be mediated in the discussion of the plight of the piano movers in the sample
task below. Regulation and control of behavior should be mediated as playing a
major role in ensuring time for planning and reflection. The meaning of the
pictured event should be mediated and projected into various life situations.

Syllogisms presents formal, propositional logic. In syllogistic reasoning, the
integration of information from two premises about the relationship between
terms yields the deduction of an unknown relationship. Through the tasks of
Syllogisms, learners gain the ability to discriminate between valid and
invalid conclusions and between possible and inevitable outcomes. The
instrument fosters inferential and abstract thinking.

            Cognitive functions developed

            Appropriate definition of problem.
Spontaneous comparative behavior between attributes of a set and those of set
            members.
Selection of relevant data for elaboration.
Overcoming episodic grasp of reality by establishing relationships.
Broadening of mental field to simultaneously elaborate information from
            several sources.
Elaboration of cognitive categories on the basis of conceptual criteria.
            Use of summative behavior.
Hypothetical thinking and search for logical evidence.

            Mediation of sample task

Transcendence is reached through insight and generalization from the sample
task into other areas of academic, vocational, and life experiences. Meaning
is assigned to the logical processes that allow the mind to exceed the
confines of the concrete experiences through inferential thinking. Goal-
seeking, goal-setting, goal-planning, and goal-achieving behavior is mediated
along with the mediation of regulated behavior and a feeling of competence.

Arafat's Advisor Arrested for Transferring Money from Iraq to Families of
      Palestinian Suicide Terrorists

      www.idf.il/newsite/english/iraq.stm
The Israel Security Agency, working together with IDF forces, recently
detained for questioning Rakahd Salim, the head of the Front for National
Liberation in the West Bank, who was directly responsible for the transfer of
Iraqi aid funds to the families of suicide bombers and Palestinian terrorists.

Rakahd Salim, the General Secretary of the Front for National Liberation in
the West Bank, was arrested on October 2, 2002 after documents seized by the
IDF during operation "Defensive Shield" indicated that he was responsible on
behalf of Saddam Hussein for the distribution of money to the families of
      Palestinian terrorists and suicide bombers.

Palestinians in a gathering that was
held on September 10th , where financial
support was handed out on behalf of
      the Iraqi government

During the course of questioning by the Israel Security Agency, Rakahd Salim
said that as head of his organization, he was in close contact with the
Palestinian Ministry in Iraq as well as with the Iraqi Ba'ath party's United
Pan-Arab Command. Salim last met Saddam Hussein in the year 2000, when he
talked with him mainly about the situation of the Palestinian people.

In addition, Salim said that in the framework of his activities he distributed
money to the families of Palestinians who were either killed or wounded. This
money was received primarily from the Iraqi government and its leader, Saddam
Hussein. When questioned, Salim said that so far he received and distributed
approximately $15 Million of the Iraqi government's money.

How Salim Transferred the Money to the Palestinian Families:

The president of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, was the one who decided that the money
be given to families of the Palestinians who were either killed or wounded in
the territories, and Saddam Hussein also determined the amount of money
transferred to the bank. Initially, the money was transferred to the
Iraqi "'Mashraf Al-Rapidin" bank in Amman, Jordan, and from there it was
transferred to the Alastismar Bank in Jordan. The money was then further
transferred to the account of the Palestinian Front for National Liberation in
      the Alastismar bank in Ramallah.

Salim said that resolutions of Iraqi Ba'ath party's United Pan-Arab Command
provide for the family of a Palestinian who was killed to receive
approximately $10,000. A seriously wounded Palestinian receives approximately
$1,000 and a lightly wounded Palestinian receives $500.

Salim also said that as part of his job, he held regular weekly meetings with
the heads of the Hamas, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and
the Democratic Front, in which he discussed with them terror attacks against
Israel. He admitted that as senior member of the Palestinian Front for
National Liberation he was aware of the activities and operations of his
organization's military arm. This military arm carried out terrorist attacks
in the 1970s in the Israeli communities of Kfar Giladi, Kfar Yuval and Misgav
      Am, among others.

Sice 1997 Rakahd Salim has served as Arafat's advisor for international and
political affairs. According to Salim, the Palestinian Authority is well aware
of the Iraqi financial aid given to the families of the Palestinian suicide
      bombers.

Science in search of the low rumble

      news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2309505.stm

Infrasound can be used to communicate over thousands of km

The study of low frequency sound is giving science new perspectives on the
natural world as well as helping to develop novel weapons technologies. Julian
      Trick reports.

Sound waves so low in frequency that the human ear cannot detect them may be
behind ghostly sightings and haunted buildings.
Human ears detect sounds in the frequency range of about 20 to 20,000 Hertz,
or cycles per second. Anything below 20 Hz is defined as infrasound, which
although not heard, is experienced in the form of pure vibrations.

This is not a new phenomenon; church organ builders have been using infrasonic
      pipes for over 250 years

      Sarah Angliss
The discovery that infrasonic waves are present in a number of allegedly
haunted houses in the UK has prompted scientists to investigate the effect of
      the waves on human emotions.

The audience at an experimental piano recital, where the music was laced with
bursts of infrasound, were asked to record their mood at particular times
      during the concert.

Some people reported feelings of calmness and euphoria when the infrasonic
pipes were switched on. However, others were unable to detect any change in
      mood.

      Starting note

Dr Richard Wiseman, of Hertfordshire University, UK, believes it is the
vibrations of low frequency acoustic waves, felt particularly in the stomach,
which may cause the recipient to feel uplifted or create unease depending on
the environment in which they are experienced.

Infrasound detectors can help verify arms treaties

"This is not a new phenomenon; church organ builders have been using
infrasonic pipes for over 250 years to create a sense of awe in
congregations," says Sarah Angliss, an engineer and composer involved in the
      music project.

The animal kingdom uses infrasound, too.

"The discovery that elephants use low frequency acoustics to communicate over
large distances may explain the ability of separated family groups to co-
ordinate their pattern of movement for weeks at a time, and the ability of
lone males to find a mate in the wildernesses of the African Savannah," says
Dr Katy Payne, of Cornell University, New York, US.

Dr Payne has studied elephant communication for 15 years.

She realised that vibrations in the air near an elephant enclosure at a local
zoo reminded her of standing near infrasonic church pipes when she sang in a
      choir as a girl.

      Deep burst

Further investigation revealed that elephant calls range from 5 Hz (infrasonic
range) to 50 Hz (audible range) and in the right conditions can travel many
      kilometres.

Blue whales are also known to use infrasonic waves to communicate.

Low frequency sound waves travel huge distances in water, allowing the whales
keep in touch over hundreds, if not thousands, of kilometres.

However, the underwater hotline is now under threat from noise pollution
created by human sources such as ships, submarines and drilling operations,
which create large amounts of infrasound in the depths of the ocean.

Some whales are also thought to use huge bursts of infrasound to stun the
mysterious giant squid, which have never been seen alive in their natural
      habitat, before devouring them.

      Sound shot

A more sinister use of infrasonic waves is in the application of non-lethal
      weaponry.

Elephants are a focus for research

Since the 1950s, scientists have been developing infrasonic devices which
produce acoustic waves in the 1 to 10 Hz range.

Sound waves at these frequencies were found to vibrate internal organs,
incapacitating opponents for hours, even days and sometimes leading to
      fatalities.

The main difficulty in developing these types of weapon is the huge amplitudes
required to make them effective, and then directing the waves to a specific
      point.

      Early warning

Non-military applications for infrasonic weaponry would include crowd control
      and personal protection.

The huge destructive power of infrasound is apparent in nuclear explosions.

Waves of infrasound can be detected 2,500-3,500 km away from a blast in under
two hours using a monitoring network set up under the Comprehensive Nuclear
      Test Ban Treaty.

The same network is used to monitor geophysical processes, such as
earthquakes, volcanoes, avalanches and severe weather, which also produce the
      low frequency sound waves.

Monitoring of such activity could give rise to advanced warning of
catastrophic events saving thousands of lives across the world.

      Explosives Laboratory Uncovered in Jenin
IDF forces uncovered yesterday (14 October), an explosives laboratory in
Kabtya, south of Jenin. Among others, the laboratory contained a bomb which
was safely destroyed in a controlled explosion, as well as barbed wire,
      electronic devices and chemical materials.
In the last month, IDF forces uncovered five explosives laboratories in the
Judea and Samaria area alone. On 9 September, an explosives laboratory was
uncovered in the Jenin refugee camp, and on 22 September another laboratory
was discovered in the city of Jenin. An explosives laboratory was discovered
on 29 September in Charbata, west of Ramallah, and on 2 October another one in
the village of A-Lebed east of Tulkarem.

Three wanted men were arrested yesterday near Hebron and ammunition was found
in the area. Two other wanted men were arrested near Shanur, west of Tulkarem,
another one in Nablus, and a third one near Ramallah.

President George W Bush has said that he would expect Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon to respond appropriately if Iraq launched a missile attack on his
      country. *

We never had such co-operation in everything as we have with the current
      administration

      Warning!
Please keep in mind all ANY translation (interpretation) of the Qur'an will
most definitely contain errors In its natural language (Arabic), the Qur'an is
the direct Word of Allah (God) to mankind through the prophet Muhammad (peace
be upon him). Any translation of the Qur'an no longer retains that 'official'
and perfect status, however it can be tremendously helpful to beginning
students wanting to learn more about Islam.

We would strongly encourage those want to learn about Islam to purchase a
hardcopy of the Qur'an but with the following conditions:

      get one with commentary (tafseer)
make sure the tafseer is scholarly (e.g. references to reasons behind a verse,
references to hadith and sunnah, etc.)

Unfortunately, this interpretation presented here does NOT meet this simple
conditions. To the best of our knowledge, an excellent English translation and
commentary of the Qur'an is Maududi's recently published work "The Meaning of
the Qur'an". This work took more than forty years to complete, and was
published beginning in the mid to late 1980's. Maududi's introduction to each
chapter of the Qur'an is included at the moment, but the complete commentary
      is not online (yet!).

      ;)
