Costello tips tiny budget surplus

The federal government was on track to deliver a narrow surplus in tomorrow's
Budget, Treasurer Peter Costello said.
"As we forecast in last year's Budget, we forecast a narrow surplus and I
think we're on track to meeting that not withstanding several things that
have moved against us," Mr Costello told reporters.
The federal government last year forecast a Budget surplus of $2.1 billion.
Mr Costello said the Australian economy was holding up well in the face of
weak global economies.
"The world is not as strong as it was," Mr Costello said.
"Most of the developed economies of the world are now in deep deficit ... .
"Being able to balance a Budget in today's international climate puts
Australia in front of the league."
Mr Costello said the Budget was designed to keep the Australian economy
strong and keep people in jobs.
"Tomorrow night's Budget is designed to keep Australia strong," he said.
"We'll be trying to bring together help for people in rural areas, defence
and security, together with a program which will keep the Australian economy
growing.
"It's been a difficult period and many of the comparable countries around the
world are facing rising unemployment.
"We want to keep Australia's economy growing so people can stay in jobs."
The Budget would contain measures to boost Australia's security and help
drought-stricken farmers, Mr Costello said.
"It will have new measures in relation to defence and security, measures
which will secure our borders and measures which will give us a stronger arm
with which to fight the threat of terror," he said.
"Tomorrow night's Budget will also announce measures to help our farmers,
who've been struggling against the most extensive drought recorded in
Australia."
