Bush turns blind eye to Uzbekistan massacre
==================================================
Reports indicate that at least 500 people (including women and children) were
slaughtered by soldiers in Uzbekistan, with estimates of 2,000 wounded.
The victims were among demonstrators, whose bodies were apparently laid out
in rows afterwards.
Uzbekistan, a former Soviet republic, is considered one of America's
principal allies in the fight against terrorism and the United States has
maintained a military base in Uzbekistan (since 9/11) to assist with its
operations in Afghanistan.
Although Bush continues to claim that he is fighting a war against terrorism
and seeks to bring democracy to the world, he seems to have no problem in
making friends with a country that has a poor record on human rights, and a
country who can slaughter its citizens in this way.
It is especially ironic that this should happen barely a week after
criticizing Russia on its record and suggesting that democracy needs to
improve in this country.
Unfortunately, a lack of democracy or human rights in countries that assist
the Bush administration seem to be more acceptable, and little or no comment
on the Uzbekistan massacre has been given by Bush.
Apart from the military advantage of having a base in Uzbekistan, it is also
part of the Bush administrations plan to "collect" as many ex-Soviet states
as possible, to try and put pressure on Russia itself, in the hope that a
change of "regime" can be achieved there too.
A former US Ambassador was "removed" from Uzbekistan recently for being
critical of its leader, which shows how much Bush is prepared to ignore in
order to keep an American presence there.
If anyone had any doubts about the real reason why the Bush administration
are in Afghanistan and Iraq, perhaps this situation will make it a little
clearer. It is about oil and control of the Middle East (to begin with) at
any cost!
