Sprawa masakry w Sabra i Szatila wraca po latach

Kto zabił Eliego Hobeikę?


W potężnym wybuchu, do którego doszło w czwartek rano na przedmieściach
Bejrutu, zginął razem z trzema innymi osobami Elie Hobeika, były minister i
przywódca milicji chrześcijańskiej z czasów wojny, powiązany z Falangą - partią
maronitów, libańskich chrześcijan.


Tego polityka, jednego z ówczesnych "panów wojny", wiązano z krwawą masakrą w
obozach dla palestyńskich uchodźców w Sabra i Szatila w 1982 r. Zgodę na
dokonanie rzezi Palestyńczyków miał wyrazić generał Ariel Szaron, wówczas
minister obrony i pomysłodawca izraelskiej interwencji w Libanie, a obecnie
premier Izraela. Belgijski sąd 6 marca podejmie decyzję w sprawie wszczęcia
procesu Szarona.

Jak podają agencje, Hobeika, były przywódca chrześcijańskiej milicji w Libanie,
groził ujawnieniem tajemnic dotyczących masakry w obozach palestyńskich w 1982
roku. W Brukseli, w kilka godzin po bejruckim zamachu i zgonie Hobeiki, podano
informację, że libańskiemu politykowi grożono śmiercią, jeśli ujawni tajemnice
dotyczące rzezi w obozach Sabra i Szatila. Hobeika ostatnio spotkał się w
tajemnicy w Bejrucie z grupą parlamentarzystów belgijskich, którym przekazał
powyższe informacje - ujawnił w Brukseli uczestnik tego spotkania, senator Josy
Dubie.

Do masakry w palestyńskich obozach Sabra i Szatila doszło we wrześniu 1982 r.,
zaraz po śmierci prezydenta elekta Libanu, Baszira Dżemajela, który zginął w
zamachu. O zamach na niedoszłego szefa państwa oskarżano wówczas
Palestyńczyków, przeciwnych sojuszowi chrześcijanina-maronity, jakim był
Dżemajel, z Izraelem. Okoliczności zarówno zamachu, jak i późniejszej masakry
nigdy nie zostały do końca wyjaśnione.

Grupa Palestyńczyków, którym udało się przeżyć rzeź, w czerwcu ubiegłego roku
złożyła w sądzie belgijskim pozew przeciwko Szaronowi. Oskarżono go o
popełnienie zbrodni przeciwko ludzkości. W pozwie nie wymieniono Hobeiki.
Libański polityk w wywiadzie, udzielonym w filmie wyemitowanym przez BBC
wyraził jednak gotowość złożenia zeznań w ewentualnym procesie Szarona.
Zapytany o własny udział w masakrze, powiedział: "Nie jestem przestępcą
wojennym. Wykonywałem jedynie rozkazy". Ustawodawstwo Belgii umożliwia sądom
rozpatrywanie pozwów w sprawach cudzoziemców lub przestępstw popełnionych poza
granicami Belgii.

Po zakończeniu libańskiej wojny domowej (1975-1990) Elie Hobeika, którego w
1991 r. objęła amnestia ogłoszona wobec uczestników wojny, był ministrem ds.
migracji, a także deputowanym do parlamentu.

Żydów w 1948 r. Mieszkańcy obozu zostali zaatakowani Przez wojska
izraelskie ,które zabiły 250 niewinnych ludzi. Dziewięć dni późnej nastąpiła
kolejna masakra w tym samum miejscu, Żydzi zabili tym razem 275 Palestyńczyków.
Tego samego dnia została dokonana kolejna masakra przez Żydowskich terrorystów,
na terenie obozu Ralah zostało zabitych ponad 100 uchodźców palestyńskich.

pod Bejrutem . Zbrodni tej dopuściła się armia (Alkata-eb) chrześcijański

Izraela,
w tamtych czasach był on przywódcą oddziału (101)w armii Izraela.
Zamordowali
około 3500 tamtejszej bezbronnej ludności cywilnej, Palestyńczyków i
Libańczyków.
Większość wśród zgładzonej ludności stanowiły dzieci, kobiety i starsze
osoby.

"Jeśli teraz dużo się mówi i pisze o obozach Sabra i Szatila, to po pierwsze
dlatego, że Ťjakośćť tej zbrodni jest wyjątkowa (tak ze strony tych, którzy do
niej podżegali, jak i tych, którzy dopuścili się mordu). Trudno w historii
ludzkości o zbrodnię równie podłą i okrutną. I po drugie - Sabra i Szatila
odsłaniają przed nami i światem nową prawdę o naszym narodzie (przecież
mordercy z obozów Sabra i Szatila byli członkami naszego narodu)".
Zastanawiam się, czy takie słowa mogłyby być obraźliwe dla Żydów? Chyba jednak
nie, bo sformułował je przecież związany z szacownym Tygodnikiem Powszechnym
ks. Stanisław Musiał SJ, a wydrukowała znana z obiektywizmu gazeta Adama
Michnika (z 14 marca br.). Oczywiście, w Wyborczej zamiast słów "obozy Sabra i
Szatila" użyto nazwy "Jedwabne", niemniej chrześcijańska pokora nie pozwala
przypuszczać, żeby ks. Musiał czy redaktor naczelny chcieli bezinteresownie

Masakra w obozach dla Palestyńczyków Sabra i Szatila była jednym z
najkrwawszych i najtragiczniejszych wydarzeń w historii konfliktów na Bliskim
Wschodzie.

16 września 1982 roku, wieczorem, libańska milicja falangistowska rozpoczęła
masakrę Palestyńczyków znajdujących się w położonych na terenie Bejrutu obozach
Sabra i Szatila. Obserwowali ją zgromadzeni wokół obozów izraelscy żołnierze.
Nie tylko nie zapobiegli tragedii, ale nie i przerwali jej, kiedy już do niej
doszło. Dowodzonemu przez Ariela Szarona wojsku Arabowie zarzucają wręcz
wspieranie napastników. Masakra trwała 40 godzin. Podczas niej zamordowanych
zostało ponad 1000 ludzi, a kilkaset osób, które zostały uprowadzone, uważane
są za "zaginione". W filmie o masowym mordzie w Sabra i Szatila wypowiadają się
członkowie Falangi, izraelscy żołnierze oraz Palestyńczycy, którym udało się
przeżyć masakrę.

Arab commentators were quick to blame Ariel Sharon for Hobeika's assassination

Not long after the smoke cleared from the Beirut car bomb that killed former
Lebanese Christian warlord Elie Hobeika on Jan. 24, Lebanese and Arab
commentators were quick to blame Israel and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for the
hit. It was Hobeika and his Israel-backed Lebanese militia who were fingered by
an Israeli commission of inquiry for carrying out the 1982 Sabra and Shatila
massacres in Beirut. With Hobeika apparently poised to testify before a Belgian
court about Sharon’s role in the massacre, Hobeika’s assassination raised some
eyebrows, to say the least.

Al-Quds al-Arabi observed (Jan. 25) that Hobeika’s bloody demise had been long
in coming: “[This] closes an important page in the Lebanese civil war, but also
opens a new one...regarding who was behind the...operation.” Most Lebanese and
Arab pundits agree that Hobeika had many enemies—among them Lebanese,
Palestinians, and Syrians—but none seemed more suspect than Israel, given the
timing. “Who benefits from this crime?” asked Joseph Samaha of Al-Safir (Jan.
25).“This is the obvious question to raise after the assassination. And the
equally obvious answer is: Ariel Sharon and consequently the Israeli state.”
According to Samaha, the assassination cannot be explained within the context
of internal Lebanese politics in spite of Hobeika’s dubious past.
The “remarkable coincidence” between the assassination and the Belgian
prosecution and the way in which Sharon so clearly benefits from Hobeika’s
disappearance makes Sharon “suspect number one.”

In its lead editorial, Al-Sharq al-Awsat (Jan. 25) concurred that Lebanese and
other observers were pointing blame in the direction of Israel. After all,
Israel “did not hide its strong annoyance at Hobeika’s willingness to unveil
many details before the Belgian court.” Israel is the primary beneficiary of
Hobeika’s silencing, the paper claimed. For commentators like Al-Sharq al-
Awsat’s Iyad Abu Shaqra (Jan. 25), Israel’s charge that Syria was involved in
the assassination is “unlikely,” since no advantage was to be gained by Syria.
But perhaps there were others who had different motives.

Writing in The Daily Star (Jan. 25), columnist Michael Young opined that Sharon
certainly had a stake in killing Hobeika, but there were doubts that Hobeika
actually intended to testify in the first place. “Others had the same reason as
the Israelis for fretting about Hobeika,” he surmised, adding that his
testimony in Belgium might have exposed others for their misdeeds. “Hobeika’s
indictment in Belgium would have reflected badly on those who collected him in
1986, after his ouster from East Beirut,” he added in apparent reference to
Syria.

A similar point was made by Zoheir Qusaibati in Al-Hayat (Jan. 27), saying that
one can point fingers in the direction of Sharon as well as others in Lebanon
who are afraid of “revealing secrets of another kind.”

It is unclear whether the full truth of Sabra and Shatila will ever emerge and
whether Hobeika’s death will benefit Sharon in the court proceedings in
Belgium. As a result of the killing, however, The Daily Star noted that Hobeika
once told its editors he made tapes of his own testimony regarding the
massacres and entrusted them to his lawyers—testimony he said that would
implicate Sharon even more in the massacres than is widely believed. If the
tapes ever emerge, questions will certainly remain as to whether Hobeika’s word
is one that can be trusted

Returning to Sabra and Shatila, 20 years on

Twenty years ago, Swee Chai Ang was a young surgeon from Singapore who came to
Britain as a political refugee.
A Christian who belonged to a church that supported Israel, she watched the
unfolding events in the Middle East with increasing dismay.
In 1982, she knew nothing about the politics of the region, yet the Palestinian
refugee camps struck a particular chord. Ang’s mother had been interned and
tortured by the Japanese during World War II. As the fighting increased and the
Israelis invaded Lebanon, she walked out of her London hospital job and went to
work in Sabra and Shatila’s hospital, Gaza.
When the wounded flooded in ­ some of them with their faces blown off ­ on Sept.
16, the first day of the massacre during which hundreds of Palestinians were
killed by Christian Phalange militiamen, it was obvious the victims had been
shot or attacked at extremely close range.
In August, Ang went back to the camps to find out what happened to her friends
and colleagues. In Return to Sabra and Shatila, a half-hour documentary to be
broadcast by the World Service on Sept. 28, she tells a very personal story.
Any return is bitterchait. Ang had an emotional reunion with Aziza Khalidi, a
former Gaza hospital administrator who made Angtreat wounded Christian
militiamen when they showed up at the hospital during the massacre. Ang also
talked to a mother she knew from then who had sheltered her baby during the
unbridled violence. In the intervening years the child had grown into an
impressive, young Palestinian woman.
The doctor arrived in Beirut when the meetings and processions to mark the 20th
anniversary of the massacre were given unprecedented support by the Lebanese
government.
Yet the refugees live in absolute penury, and that’s not going to change any
time soon. Last year, the government revised property laws to make it
impossible for the nearly 400,000 refugees in Lebanon’s 12 camps ­ 10 per cent
of the country’s population ­ from owning or inheriting land. It is one of many
laws, including being banned from some 70 professions, that systematically deny
the Palestinians their civil rights.
As Asaad Chaftari, a senior Phalange militiaman who publicly apologized to his
victims, says in Return to Sabra and Shatila: “Thinking of the camps with one
entrance and the Palestinians are searched going in and going out. They live
with sewage on the streets. Lebanon is a small country and we don’t know how to
deal with these problems, but at least we should deal with them as human
beings. This is something we’re not doing.”
At first, Chaftari didn’t want to be interviewed by Ang until she convinced him
it was important because they’re both staunch Christians. When asked about his
mind set in 1982, he admits he was unable to distinguish between Palestinian
fighters and women and children; all of them needed to be eradicated from
Lebanon.
The Israeli forces, which formed a protective ring around the camps, sent in
the militiamen to flush out, in then-General Ariel Sharon’s words, “2,000 PLO
fighters” who avoided evacuation to Tunis. Instead, in an archival radio
broadcast in Return to Sabra and Shatila, the first BBC news reporter in the
camps, Tim Llewellyn describes groups of 20 and 50 bodies, as comprised of
women holding babies, “in grotesque attitudes of death.”
In today’s political climate, it’s difficult to imagine the Israeli outcry
after the Sabra and Shatila massacre. Prompted by the protest of 400,000
Israeli demonstrators, Ang went to Israel and gave testimony to the Kahane
Commission, which investigated Sharon’s involvement as Israel’s then-minister
of defense.
The commission held him personally responsible for the massacres, (as the
militiamen entered the camps, he was nearby at the Kuwait Embassy junction near
Shatila camp) ­ and called for his resignation. Although he was removed from
office in 1983, he served in subsequent Israeli administrations until his
election as prime minister in 2001 ­ his main, loyal constituency the Jewish
settlers.
This year, the case against Sharon was stymied in the Belgian courts.
“Actually, Sharon was indicted,” maintains Chibli Mallat, the Lebanese lawyer
representing the 23 survivors of Sabra and Shatila. “But the case could not go
forward, according to the court, because he was not on Belgian soil.”
New legislation in the Belgian Senate this month threatens to change the law.
Meanwhile, Sharon avoids Brussels. There may be other countries the Israeli
leader will shun, since cases against him are starting in the US, Norway and
Sweden.
“Lebanon needs a Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” adds Mallat, who doesn’t
believe that the case against Sharon will necessarily begin this process, but
if it did, it would help Lebanon and the Arab-Israeli conflict at large. In the
meantime, he continues, “the (Lebanese) people deserve a formal and responsible
process of accountability for large-scale crime patterns over the last 15
years.”
Sharon’s original reason for sending the Israeli Army to Beirut in 1982, to
stop rocket attacks across the border into Israel, remains a problem 20 years
on. Before Angwent to Beirut, Israeli F-16s flew over the Lebanese capital once
more to warn the occupying Syrian forces about stemming Hizbullah attacks
across the border into northern Israel. On the ground too, armed factions still
vye for control as seen in last month’s gun battles in Ain al-Hilweh, a camp
near Sidon, where pro-Fatah forces fought Esbat al-Ansar, the League of
Partisans, a high-ranking group on the US list of “terrorist” organizations
linked to Al-Qaeda.
With no right to return, Ang’s Palestinian friends and colleagues in the camps
are realistic about their future. Gone are the days when camp children dressed
in military khakis, sporting pro-PLO propaganda. Families who were once adamant
that Lebanon was the last stop before returning to Palestine are now desperate
to find a way out to any country, which guarantees their children a decent
education ­ something they can’t get in Lebanon, along with clean water and
adequate health care.
There’s a sense in Return to Sabra and Shatila, that the numbers of Lebanon’s
Palestinian refugees are slowly diminishing, as entire families find a country
to take them. In the research for the documentary, BBC producer Jo Glanville
learned that one of the refugee camps has been nicknamed Camp Denmark.
At the end of this potent half-hour documentary, Ang stands on a mass grave in
Shatila where between 800 to 1,200 bodies are buried. She remembers the last
day of the massacre when she and other hospital personnel were escorted from
the camps at gun point by Lebanese Christian militiamen. They underwent a mock
execution.
To this day her voice betrays her anger at the senseless loss of life. Yet not
once was she was afraid for her own life. Blunt and brave, she explains, “you
can’t mistake a Chinese woman for an Arab.”

DAMOUR, Lebanon - There is not much left here.


Once an elegant Christian town of hand-hewn stone homes and citrus groves
overlooking the Mediterranean, Damour is now a hollow ruin. Weeds sprout from
bombed-out foundations. Apartment buildings stagger from mortar fire. One has
imploded at an angle like a broken accordian.


Damour suffered more than most Christian towns in Lebanon's bloody 15-year
civil war that ended in 1990. It was just one of many datelines of horror
that transformed the country into a television-age Armageddon. The conflict
claimed 150,000 lives.


Both Muslims and Christians fled Lebanon, but far more Christians left. From
a prewar Lebanese population of roughly 4 million, 500,000 of the 700,000 who
emigrated were Christian. In the eight years since, another 100,000
Christians have left.


Damour's desolate streets were blanketed in fog on a recent morning. The dull
tapping of hammers broke a strange silence that falls on the town 15 miles
south of Beirut. A work crew was fitting new stones into the walls of St.
Elia's Eastern Orthodox Church, which was demolished in the fighting.


Stonecutter Michael Abu Abdella, 58, wiped the plaster dust off his hands and
remembered the attacks that devastated the Christian community and forced
hundreds to flee. The worst memory of that time was the night in January 1976
when Palestinian Fatah guerrillas returned to savage the 300 Christians who
remained. They dynamited homes and massacred entire families. They exhumed
the dead from the Christian cemetery and scattered skeletons throughout the
rubble.


''Christian families still don't feel safe coming back,'' said Abdella.


He now lives in Beirut but comes to Damour to help with the church. He said
most of his relatives and neighbors from Damour have left the country over
the years.


''I'm not sure this town can ever come alive again,'' he said.


Once a clear majority fully in charge of a wealthy country, the Christians of
Lebanon have become an embattled minority fearful of the future.


Lebanon's Maronites, by far the largest Christian denomination here, have
been affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church since the 12th century. The
Maronites's close ties to Europe's Catholic missionaries opened doors to
Western education and ideas. Through the centuries, this connection set them
apart from Lebanon's Arab Muslims.


The Christians became doctors and lawyers and financiers. They enjoyed
complete political and economic dominance for decades after their
independence in 1943 from French colonial rule. This hegemony fostered
Maronite arrogance and elitism, which embittered the Muslims. Even as the
Muslim population grew, Christians refused to share power.


Then the war erupted in 1975. The Muslim-Christian cycle of recrimination
eventually spiraled into nihilistic carnage among various militias. Christian
militias also fought viciously among themselves in the final throes of the
war. Atrocities were committed by all sides. Amid the violence, the
Christians left in droves.


They fled to Latin America, the United States, and Europe. They left in
larger numbers than Muslims because they could afford to and because of their
ties to the West.


Their exodus, and a concerted policy by a Muslim-dominated government to
naturalize hundreds of thousands of Muslim immigrants, dramatically altered
Lebanon's demographic landscape. In the years before the civil war began, the
creation of the state of Israel had pushed some 300,000 Palestinians, the
vast majority of whom are Muslim, into squalid refugee camps inside Lebanon.
Through the decades, the Muslim birth rates also have been much higher than
those of Christians.


These factors diminished the Christian presence in the country. They also
threaten the fragile balance that so tenuously holds together Lebanon's
denominations of Christians, Sunni and Shiite Muslims, and Druze, a secretive
sect that seceded from Islam.


Christians worry that Lebanon's once-robust free market economy will never be
resurrected with the newly-emerged Muslim power base. They fear that Beirut's
legendary prewar character as a Paris of the Middle East has been ruined by
the intolerance of the Iranian-backed, Islamist movement Hezbollah,
or ''Party of God.''


When Christians leave, they take their money with them - $5 billion since the
end of the war, by some estimates. Many Lebanese leaders, Muslim and
Christian alike, believe the country will have to regain its largely
Christian commercial base to rebuild.


In a November interview, Mohammad Sammak, head of the government's Christian-
Muslim Committee for Dialogue and a senior aide to outgoing Muslim Prime
Minister Rafik Hariri, said, ''Christians are more financially versed and
richer than Muslims. They have more experience in banking and they have
better connections to and understanding of the free market. When they leave
and turn their back on Lebanon, they do great damage to this country.


''We will need each other to survive,'' he said.


Just how many Christians remain in Lebanon is in dispute. There are no
official population figures in Lebanon. The last census was taken in 1932.
The reluctance to complete a new one illustrates how explosive an issue
population figures become when so many sects vie for power. As Farid Khazen,
a political science professor at the American University of Beirut, puts
it: ''Every group needs its own lies.''


Nevertheless, Khazen estimates, and church officials privately concur, that 1
million residents, or 25 percent of the country, are Christian. This figure
is less than half of the nearly 60 percent majority of the early 1970s.


Among Christians, Maronites represent roughly 65 percent of the total. They
take their name from a 4th-century Syrian monk named St. Maron. The next two
largest denominations are Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholic.


Carved into a steep cliffside outside of Beirut is the seat of the Maronite
patriarchate. Beyond an elegant courtyard, through a long gallery, sits the
Maronite patriarch, Cardinal Nasrallah Sfeir, in a red satin chair.


The gilded European decor speaks to the historical links between the
Maronites and the West. The French in particular have had a missionary
presence here for centuries and ruled the country between this century's two

W zasadzie nie powinienem odpowiadac na Twoj post ale raz Ci moge tego
niezbalansowanego + diagnoze odnosnie mych wladz umyslowych wybaczyc (widzisz
jaki tolerancyjny i milosierny jestem). Na razie nie koresponduje tylko z
osobnikiem podpisujacym sie jako "wojo", a to ze wzgledu na to ze facet jest
wybitny psych.
Zastanawia mnie natomiast to ze Twoj styl jest wybitnie "wojowaty". Ta sama
fascynacja 72 dziewicami (co juz nie tego.....?), ten sam napastliwy ton i ta
sama piana na ustach gdy nie masz rzeczowych argumentow.
Co ma zbrodnia popelniona przez libanskich chrzescijan (pod patronatem Izraela)
wspolnego z "madroscia Koranu Zab za Zab"?
Czy Ty chcesz powiedziec ze Arabowie morduja zydowskie lub chrzescijanskie
dzieci i o tym sie nie pisze "z nudow" a jezeli juz to na ostatniej stronie?

Falsification of the Holocaust

I disagree with the opinion of Haim Baram that the Israeli education system has
managed to instil a "Holocaust awareness" in its pupils (Kol Ha'Ir 12.5.89).
It's not an awareness of the Holocaust but rather the myth of the Holocaust or
even a falsification of the Holocaust (in the sense that "a half-truth is worse
than a lie") which has been instilled here.

As one who himself lived through the Holocaust, first in Warsaw then in Bergen-
Belsen, I will give an immediate example of the total ignorance of daily life
during the Holocaust. In the Warsaw ghetto, even during the period of the
first massive extermination (June to October 1943), one saw almost no German
soldiers. Nearly all the work of administration, and later the work of
transporting hundreds of thousands of Jews to their deaths, was carried out by
Jewish collaborators. Before the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (the
planning of which only started after the extermination of the majority of Jews
in Warsaw), the Jewish underground killed, with perfect justification, every
Jewish collaborator they could find. If they had not done so the Uprising
could never have started. The majority of the population of the Ghetto hated
the collaborators far more than the German Nazis. Every Jewish child was
taught, and this saved the lives of some of them "if you enter a square from
which there are three exits, one guarded by a German SS man, one by an
Ukrainian and one by a Jewish policeman, then you should first try to pass the
German, and then maybe the Ukrainian, but never the Jew".

One of my own strongest memories is that, when the Jewish underground killed a
despicable collaborator close to my home at the end of February 1943, I danced
and sang around the still bleeding corpse together with the other children. I
still do not regret this, quite the contrary.

It is clear that such events were not exclusive to the Jews, the entire Nazi
success in easy and continued rule over millions of people stemmed from the
subtle and diabolical use of collaborators, who did most of the dirty work for
them. But does anybody now know about this? This, and not what is "instilled"
was the reality. Of the Yad Vashem (official state Holocaust museum in
Jerusalem — Ed.) theatre, I do not wish to speak at all. It, and its vile
exploiting, such as honouring South Africa collaborators with the Nazis are
truly beneath contempt.

Therefore, if we knew a little of the truth about the Holocaust, we would at
least understand (with or without agreeing) why the Palestinians are now
eliminating their collaborators. That is the only means they have if they wish
to continue to struggle against our limb-breaking regime.

Here is the story of one such Jewish collaborator:

Moldetsky, a leader of the Zionist Workers Party (Poalei Zion), who was
appointed head of the council of elders in Bedzin, and who, over the course of
years, chose thousands of Jews for forced labor and extermination, succeeded in
remaining alive. For the mass deportations, Moldetsky published a decree which
was completely fraudulent and deceiving, in which he said: "Jews, dress up in
your holiday clothes and march joyfully to the gathering places mentioned
above. No one is to remain at home. ..." The Jews, in their innocence,
obeyed him. The result was that people with large families — as well as the
elderly — a total of 8,000, were sent to Auschwitz. The babies were pushed
into sacks by the Nazis.

After the war, Moldetsky — by merit of Zionist activities — was understandably
one of the first to receive an immigration certificate to Palestine. His
collaboration in the murder of tens of thousands of Jews did not make him unfit
in the eyes of the officials of the Jewish Agency, who were distributing the
certificates. He went to Eretz Yisroel where, it has been reported, the
revengeful hand of the Jews of Bedzin killed him while he was taking a trip in

Masakra w obozach dla Palestyńczyków Sabra i Szatila była jednym z
najkrwawszych i najtragiczniejszych wydarzeń w historii konfliktów na Bliskim
Wschodzie.

16 września 1982 roku, wieczorem, libańska milicja falangistowska rozpoczęła
masakrę Palestyńczyków znajdujących się w położonych na terenie Bejrutu obozach
Sabra i Szatila. Obserwowali ją zgromadzeni wokół obozów izraelscy żołnierze.
Nie tylko nie zapobiegli tragedii, ale nie i przerwali jej, kiedy już do niej
doszło. Dowodzonemu przez Ariela Szarona wojsku Arabowie zarzucają wręcz
wspieranie napastników. Masakra trwała 40 godzin. Podczas niej zamordowanych
zostało ponad 1000 ludzi, a kilkaset osób, które zostały uprowadzone, uważane
są za "zaginione". W filmie o masowym mordzie w Sabra i Szatila wypowiadają się
członkowie Falangi, izraelscy żołnierze oraz Palestyńczycy, którym udało się
przeżyć masakrę.
