"The French newspaper Liberation said that last week one of its reporters,
investigating human rights abuses in Tunisia, was beaten, stabbed and gassed.
Belgian television station RTBF said on Monday one of its crews had had a
videocassette confiscated while reporting on human rights.
They were also allegedly threatened by the men, who were wearing civilian
dress.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said from Paris: "Following the
incidents that have occurred in recent days, I call on the authorities to do
everything to guarantee freedom of information and the freedom of journalists
to exercise their profession."
Tunisia has denied that plain-clothes police were behind the attack on
Liberation's Christophe Boltanski.
However, Human Rights Watch on Tuesday alleged in a report that dissidents
criticising the government online have been arrested and thrown in jail, and
that opposition websites are routinely blocked."
