Kyodo to Set Up Pyongyang Bureau

Japan's major news agency Kyodo said Thursday it will open a bureau in
Pyongyang on Sept. 1. Kyodo is the first Japanese press firm to open a bureau
in the Stalinist country, and the second from a democratic country following
APTN, the Associated Press’ TV arm, which opened a bureau there in May. Only
media companies from Russia and China, long-time allies of the North, have
bureaus in the reclusive state.

The chief of Kyodo’s Beijing office will be in charge of the Pyongyang
office, without reporters stationed for the time being, the agency said.
Reporters will visit North Korea to cover cases using the bureau as a base.
With the new bureau in Pyongyang, the agency expects to cover North Korea
more accurately and objectively, especially when reporting on the North’s
nuclear weapons and missile problems and the abductions of Japanese nationals
in the past.
