Even in the dramatically uneven annals of Israeli intelligence, the Pollard
case stands out as exceptional. In the 1980s, Pollard, then a a civilian
intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, passed secrets to his Israeli
handlers in Washington, then led persuing Federal agents on a trail that led
to the Israeli embassy. Pollard is now serving a life sentence for espionage.
This week, Pollard, who has already fought for and won Israeli citizenship
and formal recognition as an agent of Israel, launched a third attempt to win
Prisoner of Zion status from the Israeli government, recalling the pro-Israel
activists once jailed by the former Soviet Union.
The government has fought the attempt, prompting statements by Pollard's
attorney that that Israel has betrayed him for fear of its U.S. ally.
Pollard has bolstered his arguments for Prisoner of Zion status by charging
that his U.S. jailers had tortured him with electric shocks and other means.
