medical tests &...

Hi Jonny!
I'm coming again for help :)
I would like to ask you about f.e blood tests, urine tests, etc. in UK. If I
would like to have done those kind of tests, shall I go directly to see nurse
or first I have to see a doctor? Can I have those tests done without any
particular reason? Just to check if everything is fine?

And my second question- what is the difference between for example and for
instance? When do you use each of them?

Thank you in advance!

      Hi Anula,
I would always register first with your local G.P who will then
probaby direct you to the nearest hospital for the tests. My
understanding is that you can have blood tests, urine tests and so
just to check that every thing is fine.

"For instance" & "for example" both mean the same:

I have travelled to many places, for example, Saigon, Beijing...
I have travelled to many places, for instance....

go to your GP, only them can reffer you for the tests but they are not keen on
doing it with no reason. Each test cost NHS too much and they try to cut down
all costs. If you want to do it privatly you can pay £300

Oo ania, it doesn't sound good!
I suppose that NHS spend more money for people suffering some illnesses due to
not making that kind of tests. I'm not going to pay that huge amount of money to
do it privatly, I'll do it in Poland :]

One more question - you make the tests or do them? which verb is correct?
        • jonathan.oakley Re: medical tests &... 09.12.08, 20:08
I really think that it will be fine if you to your local G.P and
request the tests :-) we can say "I am going to have urine and blood
tests... for..I am going to test my..."

the best craker of all is that NHS is going to pay £30 for smokers to help them
give up smoking but i have better idea: they should increase the price of fags
to £30, that would solve the problem at last.

it is cheaper if not free, to do test in PL,

            They are crackers!!! :-)

No, it wouldn't. What it would do, on the other hand, is make some people on the
underbelly of society, so to speak, very happy. If you've ever heard of
smuggling, you'll realize that making any commodity or merchandise either scarce
or very expensive will produce the direct effect of some people supplying it
            outside official channels...
Besides - and it's completely different, and quite broad, if I may add, subject
            - the whole "fight against tobacco" doesn't really change much in the general
level of population's health. In my estimate, if a smoker is exposed to a 100%
of, let's call them "harmful" factors, then a non-smoker's intake is somewhere
            between 90 and 95%...

aha! sounds like we are going to have a debate about a welfare
              state...are the NHS-with their incentive-making citizens less
inclined to give up for the right reasons? If someone gives up for
money might they not start again when the £30 is spent? A financial
band aid that covers the cut but doesn't eliminate the cause..

if i would be a smoker and smoke a packet of 20 fags a day (=£5) £30 reward for
quiting would be a laught for me. Why smokers should get the monies at all? If
they would not buy cigaretts how much more would they save? £30 a week x 52
weeks a year!!!! they would have £1520 more in the pocket. This should be a
reason to stop smoking not £30. Anyway, that £30 for a smoker comes from NHS
budget, I am not sure how many smokers live in UK, but can imagine this would
create enormous lump of money which could be invested elsewhere.

if i, being a non smoker will not be exposed to
              >>between 90 and 95%
              of
              >>let's call them "harmful" factors
my health will not be at risk of getting lungs cancer or other related diseases,
if we will talk about all non smokers then we can also talk about increasing the
              level of health of population.

Bisphenol A (BPA)is a chemical used in epoxy resins which help to
form a protective coat over aluminium and tin cans to prevent
corrosion. Recent tests suggest that BPA can cause diabetes + heart
disease. Can you imagine if the NHS started paying out cash to every
one to stop them eating baked beans and other tinned products? We'd
all end up paying 60% tax!!!

personaly i do not mind if someone who is sitting next to me is eating baked
beans (as long as the person doesn't contaminate the air i breathe in) but
smokers do harm themselves and all people around them.

Well, Jonathon - and Ania - I'm not sure if it's "dangers of welfare state" I
had in mind (although it has its faults too), or the whole issue of
smoking/non-smoking in general, its harmful effects, and the illusion of
eliminating nearly all factors detrimental to our health by just quitting smoking.
As I said, it's a rather broad subject, so I hesitate from "opening from both
barrels" here, but I'm tempted, I must admit...
