'Displaying the same verve that characterized Sharapova’s run to the Wimbledon
title three years ago, Radwanska swung freely but kept her unforced errors to a
minimum, recording 23 to Sharapova’s 49. She served to Sharapova’s backhand and
varied her shots and speeds to great effect.

Sharapova hit 36 winners, but her fierce ground strokes could not make up for
her faltering serve. She committed 12 double faults, resurrecting the demon that
dogged her last year when she was nursing a shoulder injury that affected her
serving motion and dealt a blow to her confidence.

The early start time — the match began before noon — was the first sign of
trouble for a natural-born entertainer like Sharapova. Every time she steps onto
the court, she is partnering with the crowd and playing off its electricity.

When Sharapova plays at night, as she did in her first two matches at the Open,
she can count on the crowd’s energy to lift her game. At 11:15 a.m. yesterday,
the stands were half empty and about the only sound came from the drone of the
engine of the Goodyear blimp flying overhead.

Radwanska, playing with the looseness of somebody with nothing to lose, produced
heady lobs, crisp volleys and laser backhands on critical points in the first
set. She did not panic when she lost her serve while serving for the first set
at 5-3, coming right back in the next game to break Sharapova with a backhand
passing shot on set point.

Radwanska weathered the wind and Sharapova’s will, which was never more evident
than in the second set and early in the third. Radwanska won eight consecutive
games in spite of her rickety serve and inconsistent forehand.

Radwanska, who defeated the former No. 1 Martina Hingis this year in Miami and
took the former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova to three sets in an Open tuneup in
New Haven, rebounded to reel off the last six games.

“Trust me, it’s not so nice losing eight games,” Radwanska said, adding: “I
think I have nothing to lose. I just hit every ball.”
