Na początku lat 80. zeszłego stulecia w Berlinie ks. Adolf Stoecker, nadworny
kaznodzieja cesarski, działacz ruchu chrześcijańsko-społecznego - postać znana
wówczas w protestantyzmie niemieckim - grzmiał podczas jednego ze swych
kazań: "Nie spoczniemy... dopóki nasz naród niemiecki... nie powstanie, żeby
zrzucić z siebie panowanie żydowskie. Kraju niemiecki, chrześcijański
narodzie, napominam Cię, przebudź się!" W protokole z wystąpienia ks.
Stoeckera odnotowano skwapliwie, że wezwanie kaznodziei do przebudzenia się
narodu zostało przyjęte "nie milknącym huraganem oklasków."

Dzisiaj wiemy, jakie demony zostały obudzone w Niemczech i w Europie, także za
sprawą kaznodziejów katolickich i protestanckich w rodzaju ks. Stoeckera. Owo
przebudzenie nienawiści kosztowało życie 6 milionów Żydów, bo tyle żydowskich
ofiar pochłonął antysemityzm nazistowski.



NOWE TABU?



W niedzielę, 26 października br., ks. prałat Henryk Jankowski, proboszcz
parafii św. Brygidy w Gdańsku, oświadczył m.in., że "nie można tolerować
mniejszości żydowskiej w polskim rządzie bo naród się tego boi". Nie była to
pierwsza wypowiedź antysemicka w ustach księdza prałata. Za niektóre z nich
przepraszał w liście z dnia 4 lipca 1995 r. skierowanym do swojego
ordynariusza.

Sprawa ks. Jankowskiego dawno wyszła poza granice naszego kraju. Wydaje się,
że i Gdańsk jest już za ciasny dla księdza prałata. Depesze agencyjne cytowały
wypowiedź ks. Jankowskiego z 5 XI br. Nie skądinąd, ale z Rzymu, stolicy
zachodniego chrześcijaństwa: "To, co naród polski myśli, ja powiedziałem
głośno. Nie przez pomyłkę, a1e z przekonaniem".

Wszystko wskazuje na to, że zainteresowanie sprawą ks. Jankowskiego na
Zachodzie nie maleje, tylko rośnie. Z wielką przykrością trzeba powiedzieć, że
do nazwisk Polaków i do wydarzeń z polskiej historii najnowszej, przez które
postrzegana jest Polska, dołączył z racji swych antysemickich
wystąpień "polski prałat z Gdańska" (niektórzy mają kłopoty z jego nazwiskiem).

Gdyby ks. prałat Jankowski jednak sądził, że zainteresowanie światowych mass
mediów zaczyna się i kończy na jego osobie, a zatem, że stał człowiekiem
rzeczywiście sławnym, to muszę go rozczarować. Wypowiedzi antysemickie same w
sobie należą do gatunku nudziarstwa ideologicznego (nudziarstwa, które jest
oczywiście szalenie niebezpieczne). Z natury są ubogie intelektualnie i
wyświechtane, jak wszelkie poglądy fanatyczne.

Dlaczego zatem światowe media tak bardzo interesują się sprawą księdza
Jankowskiego?

Na obecnym etapie tym, co interesuje opinię światową, są nie takie czy inne
poglądy i wypowiedzi antysemickie ks. Jankowskiego, tylko kwestia: jak reagują
na te wypowiedzi Polacy? To jest dla międzynarodowej opinii publicznej ważne i
ciekawe. I nie można mieć tego za złe światowym, a zwłaszcza zachodnim mediom.
Mają do tego święte prawo. Przecież chcemy wejść do rodziny państw
europejskich. Dla krajów zachodnioeuropejskich nie jest rzeczą obojętną, z kim
się wiążą. Mają one różne problemy, ale nie mają już problemu antysemityzmu,
występującego w tak ostrej formie. Chorobę społeczną, której nazwa kliniczna
brzmi: "antysemityzm", kraje te znają z własnego doświadczenia. Niektóre
zapłaciły za nią wielką cenę. Czy przy bezpiecznym, dostatnim stole jest im
potrzebny chory partner?

Jak reagują na wystąpienia antysemickie ks. Jankowskiego Polacy? Jak sobie z
tym problemem radzą?

Gdyby w którymś kraju zachodnim duchowny, ksiądz katolicki o podobnym
rozgłosie co ks. prałat Jankowski (ów rozgłos zawdzięcza on, jak sądzę, swej
wierności "Solidarności", wtedy gdy mało osób okazywało tę wierność
publicznie), wystąpił z podobnymi opiniami antysemickimi, to - tak myślę -
wielu ludzi dobrej woli wyszłoby na ulicę, by protestować: U nas jest to jak
na razie niemożliwe. Choć wydaje się dzisiaj, że budzi się wrażliwość i
solidarność społeczna, to -jak dotąd - manifestuje się ona tylko w jednym
przypadku: gdy dokonamy zostanie szczególnie bestialski mord. Sądzę, że trzeba
będzie w naszej ojczyźnie długo czekać, by antysemicki występek czy wypowiedź
postawiły ludzi na nogi. Po tym wszystkim, co stało się na naszej ziemi,
dokonane rękami nazistów, wciąż brak społecznej świadomości, że antysemityzm
ze swej natury i w każdej swej formie jest śmiercionośny, choć najczęściej nie
wprost i nie od zaraz. Mści się tutaj nasza przeszłość. Kiedyś temat
antysemityzmu stanowił tabu, a być patriotą - w wykładni rządzącej partii
komunistycznej - znaczyło być antysyjonistą (co w praktyce równa się byciu
antysemitą).

Jak jednak można się dziwić, że antysemityzm w odbiorze społecznym nie jest
postrzegany jako groźne zło, skoro w przypadku ks. Jankowskiego zawiodły
całkowicie wielkie ciała opiniotwórcze i autorytety moralne? Mam na myśli
polityków, ludzi kultury i - niestety - Kościół.



HAńBA MILCZENIA



Polityków sprawa ks. Jankowskiego wydaje się nie interesować, a już na pewno
nie spędza im ona snu z powiek. Mają pełne ręce roboty: nowy Sejm, nowy Senat,
nowy rząd, nowi wojewodowie i ich zastępcy. Lekcja z historii: to, że w naszym
stuleciu młode demokracje europejskie padły, bo nie przywiązywały wagi do
pełzającego faszyzmu i antysemityzmu, jest w ich świadomości czymś tak obcym i
odległym jak wojny napoleońskie. Przedziwna wydaje się zwłaszcza bezczynność
tych sił politycznych, które swą kolebkę plasują w Gdańsku. To, że w opinii
światowej przemienia się powoli symbolika Gdańska: z miasta, które
zapoczątkowało wyzwolenie się Polski i Europy Wschodniej spod jarzma
komunistycznego, ku miastu-stolicy antysemityzmu polskiego, ba wręcz
europejskiego, wydaje się do nich nie docierać. Skądinąd dziwną również rzeczą
wydaje się bierność samych gdańszczan: widocznie rok 1945 stanowi całkowitą
cezurę w kultywowaniu wielkich tradycji tysiącletniego grodu.

Jeśli idzie o tych, których nazywamy ludźmi kultury, to i oni również popadli
w wielką niemoc. Wystąpienia antysemickie ks. Jankowskiego są owszem,
odnotowywane z oburzeniem, ale daleko twórcom kultury w tej materii do
dynamizmu, który kiedyś przejawiali - by wspomnieć dawne dobre pod tym
względem czasy, kiedy to w redakcji "TP" prawie co tydzień podpisywane były
jakieś protesty zbiorowe bez oglądania się na groźbę ubeckich represji.
Najwidoczniej ludzi kultury paraliżuje widok sutanny. Byłoby oczywiście
całkiem źle, gdyby uważali sprawę ks. Jankowskiego za "wewnętrzne" zmartwienie
Kościoła. Myliliby się wtedy srodze. Sprawa ks. Jankowskiego hańbi Polskę,
każdego Polaka i Polkę, wierzących i niewierzących. Hańbi w oczach świata, a
co najważniejsze brutalizuje nas samych.

Jak radzi sobie Kościół w sprawie ks. Jankowskiego? Prawdę mówiąç, odpowiedź
na to pytanie najchętniej zostawiłbym historykom, którzy kiedyś zajmą się tą
sprawą szczegółowo. Bo jak tu pisać o reakcjach biskupów - a o tym trzeba by
pisać - na wypowiedzi antysemickie ks. Jankowskiego, żeby nie urazić któregoś
z naszych pasterzy. Chrystus jednak przykazał nam: "Niech mowa wasza będzie
tak tak, nie nie". I tym się chcę kierować. Nie będę cytował nazwisk, choć z
góry przepraszam, że konsument mass mediów na co dzień nie oprze się pokusie
podwiązania konkretnej wypowiedzi do konkretnej osoby.

Reakcję pasterzy na wypowiedzi antysemickie ks. Jankowskiego uszeregowałbym
wedle czterech postaw. Jedna z nich to pobłażliwość bez granic, płynąca z
niedostrzegania problemu. Bo jak inaczej ocenić wypowiedź jednego z pasterzy z
dnia 4 listopada: "Ks. Jankowski jest człowiekiem o specyficznym temperamencie
i wypowiada się w swoim stylu, zresztą nie pierwszy raz... Jest to człowiek
zdolny, kochający Kościół, kochający Ojczyznę, trochę inaczej może niż

An Analytical Perspective on the Creatio ex nihilo Concept
Abstract

The theoretical background of the analysis of the creatio ex nihilo syntagm is
constituted by the requirements of the semantics of possible worlds. Here the
philosophical and logical research is implicitly valued in the modal
reconstruction of the ontological argument. In the relations between concept,
language, and object, several changes which are controlled by universally
valid methods are possible. These are the following:

1. The antinomy given as a mystery of the world's origin is reduced to a non-
contradictory logical structure, to a concept. 2. It can be proved that to
this concept - creatio ex nihilo - several things correspond. The idea of a
possible world grants subject-object unity to nihil, as an absolute
determination and ontological correlation of creatio, as a possible
determination of the existence. 3. A system that grants possibility to the
idea of creation has its basis in the dialectic game between ontological
identity and difference.

While I cannot dwell at length on the historical development of liberation
theology,5 it is necessary to discuss some of its basic features, in order to
show its links to the Sanctuary movement. Briefly stated, liberation theology
is based on the belief that through a change in the interpretation of
scripture (specifically the Bible in Judeo-Christian liberation theologies)
and through action based on that change, the poor and oppressed can bring
about their liberation—political, cultural, and personal. The classic Judeo-
Christian model of this liberation is the deliverance of the Israelites from
Egypt, detailed in the Book of Exodus. Liberation theology more or less
formally originated in 1962, when Pope John XXIII referred to this "Church of
the Poor," as he called it, in a speech concerning the Second Vatican
Council.6

Six years later, at a conference of bishops in Medellín, Colombia, the Latin
American Bishops formalized the discussion of the Church's role in liberation
from poverty and oppression, in the context of Latin America. Far from being
an official religion, however, the theology of liberation has frequently met
with disapproval from the Vatican since Pope John XXIII,7 and various
theologians and clergymen have been summoned for official conferences and even
questioning in Rome.8

If the official church, as represented by the Vatican, has shown such
antipathy to liberation theology, particularly during the 1980s, then it is
easy to see how liberation theology could be conisdered a folk religion, since
so much of its theory and practice fall outside the bounds of the official
Church. Certainly, too, the sense of opposition has been mutual. Pope John
Paul II was heckled by a crowd in Nicaragua during his trip there for, among
other things, failing to condemn the terrorism of the U.S.-backed contras, who
had massacred seventeen civilians only a few days earlier. Feelings in El
Salvador and elsewhere were similar; the Pope was seen as an ally of the
oppressors, that is, those with land, money, and military authority. For
example, in one editorial cartoon in a Salvadoran refugee newspaper of the
time, a general turns to a poor peasant and, pointing to the Pope, who appears
on a television screen placed at the center of the cross, says to the
peasant, "Listen to this. It's exactly what I've been telling you."9

The government, the United States, and the capitalist system are frequently
depicted as the enemy of God and the people. Often national governments can
only exist with the blessing of the U.S. government, and often those who rise
to the top of the Church hierarchy in such countries, like then Archbishop
(now Cardinal) Miguel Obando y Bravo in Somoza's Nicaragua, are those who are
politically compatible or at least ideologically meek enough to survive.10

Various visual and verbal manifestations of the religion of the people
indicate the perception of this relationship between governments and the
Church. Thus for example, some Salvadoran folk art during the war would depict
the Bible or a church about to be destroyed by bombs or helicopters with "USA"
painted on them.11 And one piece of graffiti written on a wall in Bogotá
read, "The International Monetary Fund knifed the Christ child."12

Like many dissident movements, Liberation theology was and is seen as the true
word of God, in the context of the social reality of Latin America, while the
official church and its traditions can be the creation of fallible human
beings. As one Latin American Episcopal priest and exponent of liberation
theology now living in the United States explained to me in an interview,

The Pope went to Nicaragua and didn't understand what the hell was going
on, 'cause he's so [steeped] in [the] tradition. You see tradition has its
place, but tradition is a fabrication of human beings. Theology is the
expression of God's will. And when these collide, God has precedence over
tradition. [The Pope] says obey your bishops and do what they say, but if your
bishops are allied and identified with the oppressors, the hell with that.
Who's going to obey oppressors? Jesus' defiance of the religious authority of
his day is a clear example.13

One Roman Catholic priest I interviewed disagreed with my interpretation of
the Sanctuary movement as "folk":

"Christianity today is looking at renewal. It is looking at getting back to
Biblical roots. It is getting away from this split between, you know, heaven
and earth. It's a holistic thing, and so, who's going to do it—everybody or
some small numbers? And small numbers are doing it. To me it's just, I mean,
the opposite of what I would see as folk religion. I think it's really an
orthodox thing, but it's going to have smaller numbers. To me, you know, the
minute we step one inch away from Biblical theology, liberation theology
becomes nothing"14.

Sometimes this true word of God, then, exists in conflict with the existing
hierarchical religious structures, or with the beliefs of large numbers of
people. For the practitioners of liberation theology and Sanctuary, though,
this new theology is "orthodox" (which of course means "right belief"). But
the Yoder conception of folk religion defines "folk" in relation to official,
hierarchical, and institutional practice, the "strictly theological and
liturgical forms" which are but human constructs. Therefore, in relation to
the official practice established by the hierarchical power structures,
liberation theology is, by definition, folk.15 The word "folk" should not
lessen, and is not intended to detract from, the validity of liberation
theology as a legitimate religious system.

I want to emphasize here that to folklorists such as myself the term "folk"
carries neither pejorative nor disrespectful connotations. Folk religion
should not be considered low, impure, bastardized, common, or devolutionary.
Ironically, I became aware of amuse-

ment and trepidation on the part of people I am studying in regard to this
issue. (One woman turned to a friend of hers to whom I was being introduced
and said to him, "Did you know we're a folk religion?"). What folklorists mean
by "folk" encompasses the Yoder definition but also includes the notion of
expressive culture in small, local communities.16 Many of the people I met in
the context of this research, both Central and North American, would have an
almost implicit understanding of this perspective. Others occasionally
took "folk" to mean illegitimate, un-Biblical, or antiquated. I hope it is

The Midget versus the Digits
The Midget, whose name was Markoff Chaney, was no relative of the famous
Chaneys of Hollywood, but people did keep making jokes about that. It was bad
enough to be, by the standards of the gigantic and stupid majority, a freak;
how much worse to be so named as to remind these big oversized clods of the
cinema's two most famous portrayers of monstro-freaks; by the time the Midget
was fifteen, he had built up a detestation for ordinary mankind that dwarfed
(he hated that word) the relative misanthropies of Paul of Tarsus, Clement of
Alexandria, Swift of Dublin and even Robert Putney Drake. Revenge, for sure,
he would have. He would have revenge...

Damn the science of mathematics itself, the line, the square, the average, the
whole measurable world that pronounced him a bizarre random factor. Once and
for all, beyond fantasy, in the depth of his soul he declared war on
the "statuatory ape," on law and order, on predictability, on negative
entropy. He would be a random factor in every equation; from this day forward,
unto death, it would be civil war: the Midget versus the Digits....

His first overt act began in Dayton the following Saturday. He was in Norton's
Emporium, a glorified 5 & 10 ¢ store, when he saw the sign:

MAY LEAVE THE FLOOR
WITHOUT THE AUTHORIZATION
OF A SUPERIOR.
THE MGT.
What! he thought, are the poor girls supposed to pee in their panties if they
can't find a superior? Years of school came back to him ("Please, may I leave
the room, sir?") and rituals which had appeared nonsensical suddenly made
sense in a sinister way. They were trying to reduce us all to predictable
units, robots. Hah!...The following Wednesday, the Midget was back at Norton's
and hiding in a coffee urn when the staff left and locked up. A few moments
later, the sign was down and a subtly different one was in its place:

MAY LEAVE THE FLOOR
OR GO TO THE DOOR
WITHOUT THE AUTHORIZATION
OF A SUPERIOR.
THE MGT.
He came back several times in the next few weeks, and the sign remained. It
was as he suspected: in a rigid hierarchy, nobody questions orders that seem
to come from above, and those at the very top are so isolated from the actual
work situation that they never see what is going on below. It was the chains
of communication, not the means of production, that determined a social
process.. Nothing signed "THE MGT." would ever be challenged; the Midget could
always pass himself off as the Management.

F N O R D

``Very nice,'' I said. ``But why did you bring me up here?''

``It's time for you to see the fnords,'' he replied.

Then I woke up in bed and it was the next morning. I made breakfast in a
pretty nasty mood, wondering if I'd seen the fnords, whatever the hell they
were, in the hours he had blacked out, or if I would see them as soon as I
went out into the street. I had some pretty gruesome ideas about them, I must
admit. Creatures with three eyes and tentacles, survivors from Atlantis, who
walked among us, invisible due to some form of mind shield, and did hideous
work for the Illuminati. It was unnerving to contemplate, and I finally gave
in to my fears and peeked out the window, thinking it might be better to see
them from a distance first. Nothing. Just ordinary sleepy people, heading for
their busses and subways. That calmed me a little, so I set out the toast and
coffee and fetched the New York Times from the hallway. I turned the radio to
WBAI and caught some good Vivaldi, sat down, grabbed a piece of toast and
started skimming the first page.

Then I saw the fnords.

The feature story involved another of the endless squabbles between Russia and
the U.S. in the UN General Assembly, and after each direct quote from the
Russian delegate I read a quite distinct ``Fnord!'' The second lead was about
a debate in congress on getting the troops out of costa Rica; every argument
presented by Senator Bacon was followed by another ``Fnord!'' At the bottom of
the page was a Times depth-type study of the growing pollution problem and the
increasing use of gas masks among New Yorkers; the most distressing chemical
facts were interpolated with more ``Fnords.''

Suddenly I saw Hagbard's eyes burning into me and heard his voice: ``Your
heart will remain calm. Your adrenalin gland will remain calm. Calm, all-over
calm. You will not panic. you will look at the fnord and see the it. You will
not evade it or black it out. you will stay calm and face it.'' And further
back, way back: my first-grade teacher writing FNORD on the blackboard, while
a wheel with a spiral design turned and turned on his desk, turned and turned,
and his voice droned on, IF YOU DON'T SEE THE FNORD IT CAN'T EAT YOU, DON'T
SEE THE FNORD, DON'T SEE THE FNORD . . .

I looked back at the paper and still saw the fnords. This was one step beyond
Pavlov, I realized. The first conditioned reflex was to experience the panic
reaction (the activation syndrome, it's technically called) whenever
encountering the word ``fnord.'' The second conditioned reflex was to black
out what happened, including the word itself, and just to feel a general low-
grade emergency without knowing why. And the third step, of course, was to
attribute this anxiety to the news stories, which were bad enough in
themselves anyway. Of course, the essence of control is fear. The fnords
produced a whole population walking around in chronic low-grade emergency,
tormented by ulcers, dizzy spells, nightmares, heart palpitations and all the
other symptoms of too much adrenalin. All my left-wing arrogance and contempt
for my countrymen melted, and I felt a genuine pity. No wonder the poor
bastards believe anything they're told, walk through pollution and
overcrowding without complaining, watch their son hauled off to endless wars
and butchered, never protest, never fight back, never show much happiness or
eroticism or curiosity or normal human emotion, live with perpetual tunnel
vision, walk past a slum without seeing either the human misery it contains or
the potential threat it poses to their security . . .

Then I got a hunch, and turned quickly to the advertisements. it was as I
expected: no fnords. That was part of the gimmick, too: only in consumption,
endless consumption, could they escape the amorphous threat of the invisible
fnords. I kept thinking about it on my way to the office. If I pointed out a
fnord to somebody who hadn't been deconditioned, as Hagbard deconditioned me,
what would he or she say? They'd probably read the word before or after it.
``No this word,'' I'd say. And they would again read an adjacent word. But
would their panic level rise as the threat came closer to consciousness? I
preferred not to try the experiment; it might have ended with a psychotic
fugue in the subject. The conditioning, after all, went back to grade school.
No wonder we all hate those teachers so much: we have a dim, masked memory of
what they've done to us in converting us into good and faithful servants for
the Illuminati.
