Radio Maryja is a Catholic radio station founded by a priest, Father Tadeusz
Rydzyk. The station claims that it is listened to by well over 10% of adults in
Poland. One of its programmes is "Unfinished Conversations", which is,
according to the daily 'Polityka', "dominated by intolerance and
authoritarianism. It puts absolute blame on privatisation, all reforms, the
market economy, the Jews and liberals." Radio Maryja has strong connections
with a right-wing Catholic political party, the League of Polish Families,
which has 38 seats in parliament. Critics say both the radio station and party
cross the line into xenophobia and anti-Semitism. On 1 October 2002, the head
of the Catholic Church in Poland, Cardinal Jozef Glemp put into affect a decree
that bans Radio Maryja from using offices in Warsaw. The Church is trying to
entice listeners away from Radio Maryja to its official station, Radio Jozef.
