Toronto SMOG

04.04.06, 14:42
W tym roku kalendarzowym do tej pory nie bylo zadnego smog alarmu
w Toronto
Chyba to powod do dumy lokalnych politykow, ktorym udalo sie przekonac
Amerykanow aby przestali zatruwac najwieksze miasto w Kanadzie
Dla przypomnienia w zeszlym roku bylo az 48 (!)
dni zatrutego rakotworczego powietrza, szczegolnie szkodliwego dla malych
dzieci i ludzi z problemami drog oddechowych,

problem smogu w Ontario a szczegolnie w Toronto

Smog kills over 1,800 people a year in Ontario.

There are several ways to address the smog problem. Most of these solutions
relate to using less energy, promoting renewables, and burning it cleanly when
      we do use it.

      *

Design for energy efficiency includes urban design and public
      transportation systems

      *

Green energy includes reducing the use of coal-fired power plants and
      promoting renewable energy

      *

Clean energy includes setting standards for major smog-causing pollutants

In other words, the best way to tackle smog is to design our cities,
transportation systems, and energy use in such a way that it reduces air
pollution. Smog is not an isolated problem; it is an indicator of poor urban
      and economic development.

      What is Smog?

"Smog" literally means a combination of "smoke" and "fog". It refers to the
brown haze that hangs over cities, usually on hot, wind-free days.

Smog has been described as an airborne chemical soup, but there are two main
contaminants that are of concern: ground level ozone and fine airborne
particles. Both are naturally occurring, but their concentrations can be greatly
increased by human activity and the right weather conditions.

      *

Ground level ozone is formed when nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile
organic compounds (VOC) react in sunlight.

      *

Airborne particles include both primary pollutants and secondary
pollutants (e.g. windblown dust and soil, pollen and spores) and secondary
particles formed through chemical reactions involving the gases nitrogen oxides
(NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), volatile organic carbons (VOCs) and ammonia (NH3).
Particulate matter (PM) has both natural and anthropogenic (arising from human
activity) sources. Secondary PM is largely the result of human activity.
Particulate matter is divided into two categories: PM10 (smaller than 10 microns
in size) and PM2.5 (smaller that 2.5 microns).

1,800 people a year in Ontario die prematurely due to smog
Smog is a factor in the premature deaths of as many as 1,800 Ontarians every
      year. (Ontario's Smog Plan, p. 2).

Two of the principle pollutants in smog are nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile
      organic compounds (VOCs).

By far the largest source of NOx comes from cars, trucks and buses (61%).

Industry and commerce is the next largest source (23.3%), followed by coal and
      oil-fired electricity generation (11.7%). (source: Ontario's Smog Plan, p. 2)

Transportation accounts for over half of the NOx produced in Ontario...

      ...and a
      third of the particulates

VOCs come from many of the same sources, although in this case consumer products
accounts for the largest percentage (35.6%).

Once again, transportation is a major polluter at 33.1%.(source: Ontario's Smog

The smog that covers a good part of the province will remain some places at
least to Wednesday evening. Smog alarms are in force in the Center, the
Southwest and the Northeast of the ontario.

Several regions, as Toronto, Mississauga and the region of Halton, are also
under the blow of the first alarm to the heat of the summer.

In Mississauga, Newmarket, Windsor and Toronto, the quality of the air is
      conidered to be bad.

Health authorities public ask the resident to stay inside, and to drink a lot of
waters, to choose walking, the bicycle or the public transit and to postpone
lawn mowing. They counsel also people that have lung or cardiac problems to
      reduce their activities.

According to the ministry of the environment of the Ontario, it is necessary to
expect many smog warnings and alerts this summer, because of the hot weather
      predicted by Environment Canada.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadians and Americans are harming each other with air
pollution and must work closely to mitigate climate change and reduce
environmental damage, politicians from both sides of the border said on Monday.

"We need to keep pushing each other, prodding each other, (and) supporting one
another in our efforts to protect our shared air," Ontario Premier Dalton
McGuinty told a government-sponsored conference on cross-border air pollution.

"Some of our activities as humans are seriously compromising our health and the
health of our planet," he said. "Our generation bears a heavy responsibility to
      do something about this."

His sentiments were echoed in even starker language by Massachusetts Sen.
John Kerry, who said calamity looms if no action on climate change is taken.

"Within the next 10 years, if we don't do something real about global warming,
we are looking at a global catastrophe," Kerry, a former Democratic presidential
candidate, said in a speech delivered live via video-conference. "Now, more than
ever, we need to work with neighboring states and provinces to address this
      common threat."

Ontario says more than half of its air pollution comes from U.S. sources. As
well, air pollution from outside the province is responsible for more than 2,700
premature deaths, almost 14,000 emergency room visits and more than C$5.2
billion ($4.6 billion) in health and environmental damage every year, Ontario says.

In 2005, the province had its worst year on record for smog advisories,
featuring 15 alerts that covered 53 days.

Ontario and its neighboring province of Quebec formally signed on Monday a deal
to work together on smog, air pollution and climate change. And while Ontario is
moving to renew clean-air pacts with New York and Michigan to help relieve the
situation, more remains to be done, McGuinty said.

Kerry said that although there's plenty evidence of the dangers of climate
change, there has been a shortage of political will in Washington to tackle the
      issue.

"The bad news is that Washington is full of flat-Earth politicians," Kerry said.
"No matter how the evidence mounts for over two decades
