The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) today launches "Quay
to the City," a 10-day event that will transform a one-kilometre stretch of
Queens Quay into an impromptu park. Inspired by a new design for the central
waterfront created by West 8, a Dutch firm, and Toronto's du Toit Allsopp
Hillier, the project replaces two lanes of traffic with a bike path and an
uninterrupted lawn. The green kilometre is punctuated on its eastern tip by a
four-storey archway covered with 600 bicycles.

The overall project will cost $55-million to $60-million, and will likely be
ready by 2008. Construction is expected to start next spring.
For some, the $900,000 price tag for the experiment is too high.
"I don't get it. What's the point of testing it out when the plans have
already been agreed to?" asked James Krawec, who works on Queens Quay.
"I like the idea that they're trying to make the waterfront a better place,
but not when it costs [almost] $1-million for a trial run."
