Papal visit

11.05.06, 09:23
Friends of mine from Belgium will arrive in Warsaw the same day as the pope
for a long weekend. Does anybody here have an idea what the situation will be
in the city? Will bars, pubs and restaurants be open? Will they serve alcohol?
Will museums, palaces... be open?

No, but they will have the great opportunity of seeing the pope live!

Does that also count for out-of-city watering holes - such as Bar Lolek ?
Otherwise it looks as if we will have to escape to Kraków for a day sad

Bar LOL-ek is not exactly out of city, it's just that Pole Mokotowskie are big.
You wouldn't call something in the middle of Regents' Park or Hyde Park "out of
City" in London, even though in another sense the city of London is only one
          square mile.

I agree it is not exactly in the countryside. But it has the feeling of not
being in the city, that's all. In any case a pleasant spot for a
end-of-the-working week drink on a late Friday afternoon.
So I suppose it will be out of business as well I suppose on 26 May?

              I suppose.

But there is always a free lecture at the British Embassy building on Emilii
              Plater.

13:00 -16:00 with refreshments. It's an Environmental protection seminar, and
I'm up thrird talking about the impact on the Balance Sheet under IAS 37.

I need to supply names to the Embassy by the 22nd, for anyone who is interested.

I can also e-mail the invite on pdf wihich gives the whole info about it, and
the other speakers. Unfortunately I don't have it in plain text.

      It's difficult to say.
Whenever the last pope was due to visit (you might remember him) all the local
authorities in PL would compete with each other to see who could be most
catholic for a week, who could ban most things, worship most statues and most
thoroughly search the homes of non-Poles.
In about 1999, Wojtyła was due to do a gig in Gliwice, so the sale of alcohol
was banned in the entire Silesian Województwo. He wasn't able to leave Kraków
(nobody knows why, since according to the Polish media he was never old or
sick) but the ban stood. And the pubs didn't bother opening.
Fortunately, since the ban was only on the SALE of alcohol, it was possible to
borrow drink from a friendly shopkeeper, and then lend him some money the next
day in a friendly non-commercial way.
As far as I know, however, Wojtyła wasn't a tee-totaller, although he often
magically changed evil wine into wholesome blood.
And TV programmes with tits in them tend to mysteriously disappear from the
screens during papal visits (it might shock him, because there is of course no
      nudity on Italian TV).

The Warsaw Tourist Office claims it will be business as usual, but in my
favourite bar they tell only beer with alcohol -4 % will be served...
I'd better raid our local Carrefour well in advance of the visit then.
Or perhaps it is a German pope might make a difference?
Also heard all "offensive" ads on billboards will be removed on the pope's
Warsaw touring circuit. I wonder what they mean with that?
That very dishy model figuring on the Roxy FM ads has already disappeared, to
        my disapppointment sad(

That's exactly what happened before - the bars with weak (and expensive)
imported beer decide it's not worth opening because they've only got one barrel
          of Radegast.
Get some beer in the night before and drink it in a park - that's not allowed
either but all the cops'll be to busy protecting the pope to care about
          criminals and drunks.
