Both sides are entrenched in a siege mentality, both sides are justifiably
angry and understandably paranoid.
Most Israelis and Palestinians presumably just want a peaceful life, but if
you're on one side of the wall and you know that there are extremists and
populists stirring up shit on the other side, backed by a brutal and brutalised
military machine or by people bitter and desperate enough to become suicide
bombers, then you're not going to take any chances. If you know that 10% of the
people on the other side might kill you, how do you know which are the 90% you
can trust?
Nothing justifies killing civilians, but as long as one Israeli or one
Palestinian demands revenge, and as long as there are two or three people angry
or afraid enough to listen, it's not going to stop.
We all know human nature, and we know shit will continue to happen there. The
Israelis will do different shit from the Palestinians, but shit is shit.
And the sad thing is that the next generation will keep it going.

I think this description is a bit provocative (and the censors won't let anyone
contradict me here), although the Israeli state was obviously founded
zionistically (whatever the views of its inhabitants), and many of its over-
reactions (however understandable they may be, considering the threat) are
tantamount to state terrorism.
