The process begins with a physical abilities test (PREP), a police analytical thinking inventory (PATI) and a written essay (WCT). If the candidate is successful with the preceding three test, a video simulation (BPAD)and a vision/hearing test will follow. Successful candidates will then receive the Ontario Chiefs of Police Certificate (OACP). No exceptions will be made to the established standards. Education Grade 12 Diploma by Alberta Standards OR equivalent, plus two years of post- secondary education or two years of recent and verifiable employment with the same employer. Health Excellent health is a requirement. Physical Condition Excellent physical condition is essential. Do not underestimate this requirement. Be prepared to pass this test immediately. The attached physical fitness standards are minimum standards only. Remember that the selection process is competitive. (www.joineps.ca/application/recruitment/standards/default.aspx ) Vision Applicants who require visual aids (glasses or contact lenses) must have vision of 20:40 (6:12) in one eye, 20:100 (6:30) in the other or a combination of 20:60 (6:18) in both eyes, or better, without visual aids. Vision must be correctable to 20:30 (6:9) in each eye. Vision that does not meet these standards will be cause for rejection. The procedures of orthokeratology and corneal implants are not acceptable as a means of visual acuity enhancement. Applicants must submit a vision report, signed by a qualified Opthalmologist or Optometrist. Hearing Hearing thresholds no greater than 30 decibels in each ear at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz. Character Good moral character is fundamental. Applicants cannot have been found guilty (including any disposition by discharge) of any criminal offence within the five year period preceding the date of application for engagement. If a criminal record exists, the applicant must obtain a pardon before the application will be considered. An application will not be accepted if there is an outstanding criminal prosecution against the applicant. Other Requirements Before an offer of employment is made, successful applicants must possess the following: Canadian citizenship or legal permanent residence (Certificate of Citizenship and/or Birth Certificate or Landed Immigrant documentation). Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence. Good driving record (maximum of five demerits). Good writing skills. Written communication testing will be included in the selection protocol and may include an essay. Certificate in Standard First Aid (minimum 16 hour course), approved through Provincial Occupational Health and Safety. Certificate must be issued within one year prior to the date of application. Re-qualification may be necessary for some components after one year (i.e. CPR). Current Certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation BLSC with standards equivalent to those of the Canadian/American Heart and Stroke Foundation.
