A working-class girl
Stewart may give the impression of a Connecticut blue blood, but her roots
are in New Jersey. She was born Martha Kostyra in 1941 to a working-class,
Polish-Catholic family, the second of six children raised in a modest cottage
on Elm Place in Nutley. Her late father, Edward Kostyra, was a pharmaceutical
salesman; her mother, Martha Ruszkowski, now in her late 80s, is a former
schoolteacher and homemaker. Stewart credits her parents with instilling in
her a love of cooking, gardening and "beautiful things," as well as a
powerful drive to succeed.
